    10. OpenOffice - Sometimes I need to do presentations at work... - http://www.openoffice.org/

This isn't a "morally pure" list - but really, using non-free software isn't a crime. And I do install Java as well - there are DEB packages available from http://z42.de/debian/.

And I do install Mozilla, but it's a dependency of GNOME 2.6 - I've been using Epiphany as my browser since 2.6 was installed.

Hmm, there are 8 pages of comments for this article, who's going to read this :-) But as I said, 6 months without booting into Windows, both in work and at home (that's three machines). DVD watching, DivX watching, music playing, web browsing, chat. What else do you need?

Well for a complete geek machine, you need the latest 2.6 kernel, udev , D-BUS and hal - see http://www.freedesktop.org/ for details - there are, of course, Debian packages of all these, and they work quite well on all three desktop systems I use.

  2. Re:"There should be no end-user impact" on Verisign Plans DNS Changes · · Score: 2, Insightful

To be honest, this makes reasonable sense to me. I can see the case for Verisign wanting to make new registrations available immediately, rather than at the next 12-hourly update.

Eventually, the zone data could be updated every time the contents of .COM or .ORG changed, with no real impact on the end user (because of DNS caching). The zone data could even be generated dynamically, directly from a database, with the serial set to the last time the database was updated. I know, historically, this isn't the way DNS servers have worked, but why not run a DNS server directly from a database? This would pave the way for that possibility for Verisign.

With the exception of this one-time hit on people who want to pretend to be slaves of .COM/.ORG, there should be minimal other effect, and does make it possible for faster (or let us say 'almost immediate') addition/removal of domains to occur.

  5. Gecko Runtime Environment on Creating Applications with Mozilla · · Score: 2, Interesting

One of the big updates being done for embedding purposes in the big 1.2 push is to get a basic installation prepared which can be used for all sorts of Gecko/Mozilla-based applications. See it coming to an application near you soon!

This is a very important development as it means that the full Mozilla suite will no longer need to be packaged with your custom application. The basic installation may even be installed on the system already - and can then be discovered and used by your system without installing a second copy!

This miraculous beast is the GRE, and its webpage is here.

I was looking at the issue from the point of view of killing the patent industry for good. Of course prior art could stop them from collecting, and I do hope that happens. But we need the patent abuse to stop for good, but this will not be a test case for that, unfortunately :-(

Fight what good fight? Forgent broke no laws. Ethically they may be far from clean, but there is no case to be fought here in the courts. Perhaps it can be used to highlight the futility of patents in the public mind, and to other governments around the world - but as it stands, patents are too entrenched in the US for anything to remove them.

The only thing that could improve the situation is that the MPAA find that patents are beginning to eat into their profits, and get their pet senators into action ;-)

Check out mpt and hyatt's viewpoints on current and future trends in mozilla development. Some very interesting views there, I think Dave Hyatt's call for hundreds of different browsers to suit different people should be a call to action! Look at how well galeon has done - as long as they all use the gecko engine, we'll all be richer for having different browsers for different occasions.

  10. Re:And another NY Times article on NY Times on Anime · · Score: 1

Is it not interesting though just how much editing had to be done to alter what was originally a shojou anime, directed solely at girls, into a cartoon which was meant to appeal to both boys and girls? The timeline of the story had to be changed radically, including skipping to episode #8 of the original to start the "Cardcaptors" series, where the strongest male character enters the show. This changed the focus of the series, but they opened up massive plot holes, as well as causing mystification on the faces of most people who watched the series, feeling that they were dumped straight into the middle of the series, rather than at the beginning.

The rationale for this change was given by WB Kids! as that the demographic for cartoon watchers is 75% male. The question can be asked, that if they orient all these stories towards boys, what will be there to entice girls to watch the series? And is political correctness going too far, when a series HAS to be modified to try and appeal to both sexes?

Sigh. Anyway I'm buying the Pioneer set of DVDs of "Cardcaptor Sakura" - subtitled with the original story and dialogue. I've enjoyed the Nelvana version of Cardcaptors, but now I want to see all the episodes and stories I missed, and see the story without glaring loopholes.

  12. Re:What about Jython? on Python Now GPL compatible · · Score: 1

Unless Jython changes its licence also, it is not yet GPL compatible - point 8 stipulates that the agreement is to be governed by, and interpreted in the state of Virginia, the very issue which stopped the CPython CNRI licence from being compatible.

Since class files are run together in one memory space, an incompatible code licence is an issue.

So distributing JPython is incompatible with other GPL Java code. But remember that if none of the other code is GPL, then this is not an issue. And if you are writing the other Java code, you can release your code under a licence compatible with both the old CNRI and GPL licences.

Oh and to clarify: just distributing GPL with non-GPL code isn't a problem. It's the 'running in the same memory space' issue which is. So if some of your Java code is run completely separately from the others, say client and server software, the two components can have incompatible licences.

I would mention the in-flight entertainment company I'm working for during the summer here, but we don't want to be slashdotted! But we've got satellite linkup working for Net access in a development model, with USB connectors for laptops etc. (software for that not written yet), along with cool proper on-demand video - pause, fast forward, rewind all work - much better than what I've experienced on Virgin Atlantic recently!
