I enjoy Mythbusters but that is one thing that annoys me about it (and plenty of other Discovery/History/etc. shows) - they split the myths into separate segments, intertwine them, then waste quite a bit of time rehashing what they're trying to accomplish and what they've done so far.

A while back, I recorded a show on the history of the Great Wall off History Channel, and I found I couldn't watch it - the new facts trickled out at a rate of one every five minutes (it seemed). The three hour show probably could have been compressed to half an hour or less.

Every commuter rail/subway system in the US is partially funded by taxes. It's just too expensive otherwise. DC's Metro has constant problems with funding because they have no dedicated source, unlike most (all?) other US subway systems, so they're constantly being jerked around by the three local governments. For the NYC subway, see this article.

Professors aren't hired because they're good teachers. It's a nice plus, yes, and most of the ones I had are good teachers, but that's not what gets them hired.

I used to own an '87 Escort (granted a much smaller, lighter car) that didn't have power steering, and the only time I really noticed a large difference in everyday driving was in a tight parking lot where I had to turn the wheel, then move the car (instead of being able to turn the wheel while the car was moving).

My dad did have an Olds or something (early 90s era, I think) that occasionally would lose power steering on right turns. That was always fun. It was harder to turn when it happened but not so hard that it was nearly impossible to do it.

Also, I love that you say that but ignore this, from the article you linked. This is about selecting Greenwich as the prime meridian back in the day:

Rival 1: Washington was a key competitor, but the US threw its weight behind Greenwich, taking it out of the race.

Any chance to bash the US, eh?

Yes and no. Yes it is technically possible. But no, for several reasons. First, the time to do it isn't worth it. Second, maintaining it is going to take up more of my limited free time. Third, it might just be a bit too far over the edge toward insanity or something. Fourth, I just know that half the stuff I see will somehow be out of sight of the camera, which means I'll want more/better cameras, etc. Fifth, I really just don't want to spend the money doing it - I have much more pressing problems to deal with, and this would just divert resources (time and money) from those.

Someone backed into my car while it was parked a couple weeks ago and took off. $2000 worth of damage (including some used parts rather than new) and $250 out of my pocket for the deductible. You'd better believe I wish I had video of that incident, because not only would they be paying, they'd be getting a ticket for leaving the scene of an accident. In addition, maybe I could find out why they couldn't see a red car parked in a lot in broad daylight.

For a side project, I've sometimes considered creating an "aggressivedrivers.com" website or something that just shows video of some of the stupid shit I see people doing out on the road. But what would be the point? It's not like anything short of dying will stop those drivers.

Thanks for this info! I have a similar problem - the people who lived at my house before me apparently took off in the middle of the night and left all kinds of debt strewn around. I bought the house (they were renters), and the collection agencies started calling ME. As far as I can tell, the collection agencies find the old number is disconnected, then do a lookup to see what phone number is available at the house, and call it. Idiots - you'd think they could also look at the names and go, "Hey, these are different people!!" I've lived here over three years now (and the renters moved out many months before I bought the house - they may have even been gone for more than a year), and I still get calls for them perhaps once every 6 weeks or so (fortunately waaaay down from the 2-3 every week I got when I first moved in, but still annoying).

One time a lawyer left a long message on the machine for them trying to get them to call her before court the following day (where I assume she got a default judgement, since I doubt they knew or cared about it). I was sorely tempted to either call her and either (a) imitate them and call her nasty names, or (b) ask to join her lawsuit for the time I've spent dealing with their many collection calls.

The automated ones are the worst. If you ignore them they just keep calling. So I have to spend time calling them and carefully explaining how someone can actually move to a new residence. It can take a while for them to understand that concept.
