I've also had the in-betweens. These are bosses that are intelligent, but know nothing about your project. So, if you need help or advice on something, you're stuck.

The idiot boss is the most annoying, though.

They disconnected her port, but fortunately the woman who runs the network is a BSD person who's pretty sharp (she's spoken for, I'm told). She was able to track down the problem and disconnect the computer quickly until my friend could fix the problem.

I gave my friend directions on disabling the DHCP server and all was fine.

I guess if you're going to overclock it, then you'd want it cooler. But if not, then all you really need to accomplish is keeping it below "lockup/meltdown" level.

Here's what I have to say about mathematicians (since I have a bachelors in mathematics): Most people would invent paint to cover a wall they have that's bare. Mathematicians would invent paint with no intended purpose, then later discover it could be used on a wall.

Mathematicians frequently create for the sake of creation, rather than for any specific purpose.

I don't have any experience with this directly, but it makes sense. For example, I have two cars, and the dimmer for the dashboard lights is in the same place in both of them. However, the direction is reversed (one makes the dash lights brighter when you roll it upward, the other makes them dimmer). I can't remember which is which.

However, in the same two cars, one has the headlight control on the turn signal lever, while the other has the headlight switch on the dashboard. I never have any problems remembering which is which and finding/using the controls without even looking.

Same goes for the radios, which are totally different. I almost never mix up the controls on the two.

So, the differences making the interface easier to remember makes perfect sense to me. Of course, there's only so far you can go; I think the basic premise that XP, Gnome, and KDE use now (a "start" button of some sort) is essentially the best available. Sorry- should have been more specific. This is after I've imported(via QIF file from my bank) all the transactions. They've got names(comments?), but no expense categories. I'd like to quickly select multiple items to assign to one expense category, otherwise, there's not a huge time savings from importing the QIF in the first place, but the time i get the file downloaded, transferred over to the linux box(Mozilla doesn't handle their download wizard quite right, Safari does it), and imported.

So you're relying on the bank to update the transactions? Isn't that a tad risky? :)

I've never used that feature (other than when I first started using Gnucash), so I haven't run into what you're saying. It sounds like a reasonable request, though, and probably not that much work for them. One of these days I might try it for reconciling...I think that works.

That's silly. In my condo, the power bill shows exactly how much we spend on heating/cooling and how much we spend on everything else.

In my 1-bedroom condo, my non-heating/cooling bill is about $17/month. That includes TWO computers running full time (one with a 400W supply: an Athlon XP 1900+; the other is a Pentium 133 used as an MP3 player), with a third computer that I frequently leave run on weekends. It also includes my stove, refrigerator, lights, television, DVR, fish tank with heater and filter, dishwasher, i.e. anything that's not heat or a/c. (I don't have a washer or dryer.)

My conclusion: computers are cheap to run. If you're going to use it on anything approaching a regular basis, let 'em run, because the expenses incurred when you aren't using it is minimal. (Now, for the computer I only use on the weekends, that makes less sense to run continuously.)
