  1. It the specification! Stupid! on Has The NSF Automated Coding with ExCAPE? (adtmag.com) · · Score: 1

The poltical types are unaware how much money has been wasted in the effort for decades. Most people believe computers work like "Open the pod bay doors, Hal" rather than complex mechanisms that must be carefully prescribed tasks.

This effort has had a budget of 10 million spent over 5 years so these guys need to show some results in this election year. I would like to see the budget for the 4th generation computer effort and all the other work to make programmers obsolete. When the real bottleneck is alway the specification and feature creep (my mind drifts back to the old Saturday night horror movie presentation called Creature Feature....).

Dr. Perlin created the method, the company and uses the software. There are no articles that independently validate the software. The software is a only one of its kind type item. In this case the artificial patent monopoly may work against Dr. Perlin and his company.

    From the article

According to a court filing made by Dr. Perlin in the case, his company, Cybergenetics, “has invested millions of dollars over two decades to develop its TrueAllele system, the company’s flagship product. Although the technology is patented, the source code itself is not disclosed by any patent and cannot be derived from any publicly disclosed source.”

Other points 1) Dr Perlin's software does not have a cited "independent validation study" that is a study without the involvement of Dr Perlin. 2) "TrueAllele, created by Dr. Perlin, "is the only computer software system of its kind that interprets DNA evidence using a statistical model."

Here is the trouble I see, 1) Cybergenetics may have a problem defending it's patent, give that the software cannot be derived from "any publicly disclosed source" does the patent really disclose the real methods or it is likely this is another "software patent" with all the legal problems these currently have at the supreme court. 2) The sofware, Cybergenetics and software validates all seem to be tied to Dr Perlin, if this causes problems in courts Cybergenetics market with law enforcement will evaporate. 3) We know "software engineers" have been publicly accused in the VW matter, could they not do the same for Cybergenetics with out Dr Perlin's knowledge?

TFA references a youtube video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?... ) which references "my 2002 Volkswagen Jetta TDI." the VW diesel "cheats" only started in 2008.

A History Of Gaming The System

It started in the 1970s, just after the EPA was created and began to regulate auto emissions under the Clean Air Act. Volkswagen, in fact, was among the first to equip its cars with defeat devices to override emissions control systems. In 1973, it confessed to installing them on 25,000 cars. The following year, Chrysler was forced to recall more than 800,000 cars after it was found to have installed a similar device in radiators.

The 1990s saw a couple of major scandals. In 1995, General Motors settled with the Justice Department and the EPA for $45 million, acknowledging it installed a computer chip in 500,000 Cadillacs that tripled the amount of carbon monoxide output when the cars’ heating and cooling systems were running. Three years later, Caterpillar, Mack Trucks and Volvo Trucks reached a similar settlement, worth $1 billion, for equipping trucks with defeat devices.

Kia and Hyundai followed suit more recently. Last November, the South Korean corporations copped to overstating fuel economy standards on 1.2 million cars from 2010 and 2012, settling with the Justice Department and the EPA for $300 million.

A representative for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, a trade group that represents automakers operating in the United States, declined to comment.

The Nazi team went the very expensive heavy water route because the graphic route appeared unworkable . After reading The Making of the Atomic Bomb I concluded that the Nazi were unable to make a good estimate the needed critical mass because of Boron in their graphite. Essentially the US National Carbon had a better process than the German Siemans process. Or perhaps this was because Fermi was on the American team and demanded a better process. Another possibility was that Heisenberg just missed the Boron.
