> I hope it's also being reported that fewer boys than girls choose professions such as nursing, interior decorating and midwife
If there were a high paying, high power job that men were no longer going into... it would stop being a high paying, high power job.
The jobs you mentioned: nursing, interior decorating and midwifery are less respected than doctor, builder and EMT because women make up the majority of people in those fields.
Whenever women start entering a certain profession, that profession begins to loose status, and the amount of money that people in that profession make begins to decline. When men made up the majority of teachers and secretaries, those jobs were much more respected and came with much higher salaries.
is that women are actively encouraged to avoid CS.
When I (a women) was in college and trying to declare a major, I told my advisor that I wanted to get my degree in CS. He immediately replied that I should go into biology instead, because the math in CS would be too difficult. I am not even remotely bad at math, so his statement was somewhat shocking to me. I can only assume that it was caused by the general "girls are bad at math" mentality. I'm not debating whether women are worse than men at math or science, but when a professor at a top ranked engineering school automatically assumes that the girl student in front of him doesn't have enough math skills to get a CS degree, then there is definitely a problem.
I also have to add that my mother discouraged me from getting a CS degree too. She said, "Computer Science is so lonely... you don't want to do that. Wouldn't you rather do something that involved people?"
In the end I decided to get my BS in biology with a minor in computer science. Perhaps it was my fault for listening to them, but I ended up wasting time learning about e-coli when I should have been focusing on what interested me... (I'm now running my own software company.)
If you're going to be making analogies here, at least make the correct ones.
A muscle bound man does not compare to a women with exceptionally large breasts. For one, muscles are _used_ during fighting. Laura's breasts are just gratuitous. The games you mentioned would only be sexist if the male characters all had extremely large penises.
I think the man who recently tried to change his name to God lives in Florida.
This article from the Lake City Reporter (newspaper of Columbia County, Florida) has much more information on the man formally known as Charles Haffey:
My grandmother was a Jehovah's Witness who taught me that idolatry worship was wrong and made a big deal out of the fact that I should never say the pledge of allegiance. However, my teacher also made a very big deal out of making all of the children in my class stand up and say it.
I remember standing up and lip-syncing the pledge of alligiance every morning. It was a very big deal to me. I worried that my teacher would find out I wasn't actually saying the pledge. I worried that God would be angry that I wasn't exactly following his rules. The pledge should not be presented to school children who can not figure out whose authority is highest.
I bought one of these printers and I agree that the packaging was extreamly deceptive. People are missing the point when they say "If you don't like the fact that HP sells half full ink cartridges, don't buy from them." I had always thought HP was an upstanding company so when I went shopping for a printer, I specifically looked for an HP. The printer package clearly stated it included an ink cartridge. It did not clearly say that the ink cartridge contained half as much ink as normal.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the most annoying thing about my new printer. Printing in grayscale uses the color cartridge. As yet, I have found no way to make it use the black one. Now that my color cartridge is out of ink, I can't print any graphics at all... even though I still have plenty of ink left in the black cartridge.
The chances of me getting another HP printer are slim.
I got this game a couple of weeks ago and it is wonderful. It is hard to find good plot driven rpgs lately, but Wizardry 8 has been keeping me up nights.:)
Oh, and I think its only avalible from Electronics Boutique. I tried to get it at Best Buy and they told me that they had never heard of it.
The question: "Will the FBI shut down every site mentioning disruption on 01/01/2000?" (in the original post) is seriously misleading. The original post and many of the replies here indicate that the FBI was trying to stop distribution of an artist's work because it was threatening to the public's safety. However, after reading the article, I came away with the impression that the FBI wanted the video pulled because it was libelous , not because it might instigate violence. The website presented the video not as a work of art, but as a true documentary which showed the FBI doing something very wrong. While the FBI's actions may not have been appropriate, the issue here doesn't seem to be about 'a clear and present danger' at all.

It was about 5 years ago, but he was relatively old. Maybe his ideas were a little dated.
In any case, he was not from the CS department. Actually, I found everyone in the CS department at RPI to be very encouraging too.

A good rule of thumb is, if it's solid at room temperature, it will probably be solid in your arteries as well.
Uhm... only if you're a reptile.

It's just something I have to do all the time. :)
