  1. None ready for primetime on Windows Media Center Edition vs. The World · · Score: 3, Informative

    Let's see:

    MythTv is at version .16
    MediaPortal is at version .0.1.0.3

Do you really want to run what is essentially an alpha product? I don't. These people also are happy with the fact that it sorta works, but not all the way. If you had a high end media room with a 100" screen and a projector, the image quality is not where it should be. It proably looks great on your 17" lcd or 4:3 ratio 27" television.

I'm not even sure what the snapstream product is. You can do everything it lists for the tv stuff with the software that comes with any pc tuner card.

MCE 2004 was a disaster. Horrible product, run away as fast as you can. MCE 2005 is loads better, though not perfect yet. Numerous companies offer a ready-to-go unit ala a DVD player. Just plug and go. The HP z545 and the Alienware DHS series are great machines that you can setup just fine to output to a HDTV projector and it looks great. You can also play Doom on them and surf the net. Nice integration.

Nobody YET offers a MCE with OTA or QAM HD support. You can add the card yourself (the ATI HDTV wonder is on the short list of cards supported by MCE) and you're good to go.

Until you can buy a pre-made box from a company with Myth loaded and ready to rock, I don't think you'll see myth in the living room. Microsoft got a computer in every home, now it wants one in every living room connected to the tv. If MCE 2005 is where they are going, they are headed in the right direction.

Overseas, you don't see a lot of SUVs because they are gas guzzlers and gas can cost $4/gallon over there. Americans somehow feel that a 2+ ton vehicle is safe. Going 90mph in a SUV is pretty darn dangerous due to a high risk of rollover. In the event of a rollover (which SUVs are 10x more likely to do in the event of an accident) there is a 35% increase in the possibility of a serious injury.

The fact of the matter: if you're going 60mph and then suddenly de-accelerate to 0 in less than 12 feet, you are going to get hurt. Will you get hurt more in a SMART? No.

In America where bigger=better, we have roads littered with these monstrosites. Because they are called "trucks", they aren't subject to the same emission requirements as a car. The laws surrounding SUVs need to change.

Reading the slashdot opinions here paints an image of America as fat, lazy, and arrogant people with no regard for anything other than themselves.

  3. Re:Cheap at half the price on Cable HDTV Not Ready For Primetime? · · Score: 5, Insightful

Bose = User who doesn't know anything about audio.

Safe to say he might not know a whole lot about video as well. I've had to help many rich people setup their stuff: they just walk into a store, hand the clerk their checkbook, and assume they're getting the best. A Bose system wouldn't ever be found in a home of someone who knows what they're doing. It's for CEOs/CFOs or people who want to be like them.

I wonder if it's as simple as having the cable company remove a filter on his line, or maybe he's multi-plexed in his area. A call to the cable company wouldn't hurt, me thinks.

  4. Series 2 are not high quality on TiVo and Netflix Hook Up · · Score: 1

Presumably you'll need a Series 2 Tivo for this. None of the DirecTivos support the usb ethernet. That being the case, the best video output a Series 2 Tivo has is s-video. It also only has stereo output. Now, am I supposed to watch a dvd s-video (no widescreen) in two-channel stereo on my hd 7.1 setup? I'll rent, thanks.

    Waiting patiently for hd-dvd.

  5. Re:Problem with Tivo and Netflix on Trouble for Tivo and NetFlix Partnership? · · Score: 0

They talk of delivering over broadband. Unless something has changed recently, all the DirecTivo units are not broadband enabled. I know they have 5.1 capabilities, which is good.

All Series 2 standalone units are not suited to watching DVD unless you have a 27" 4:3 tv and only use the tv speakers. Oh maybe you can use some ProLogic tomfoolery to get synthetic 5.1, but no modern system worth its salt is going to watch like that.

Tivo needs to come out with a unit that has dvi/component video output, optical audio out, ability to record 5.1 HD content (not just the directivo version) and throw in a DVD player. One for my pc are $30.

  6. Problem with Tivo and Netflix on Trouble for Tivo and NetFlix Partnership? · · Score: 5, Insightful

    1) Only s-video video output
    2) Only stereo audio output

I rent movies because I can view them using the DVI output of my DVD player and the optical audio output to the 5.1 reciever. The Tivo is not quality audio or video capable, so I'd never use this service in the first place.
