My girlfriend of 3 years believes heavily in astrology. Checking her astrology websites is the first thing she does in the morning. It can be trying, especially when she tries to tell me how I am supposed to be. It has also led to a few horrible situations where she was wrongly convinced I was cheating on her (the stars told her so).
I deal with it, though. I love her, and it's one of those things you have to live with.
But, one thing I never understood... if Pluto is "an important planet for my sign", and astrology is thousands of years old, how the hell does that work when Pluto was discovered less than a hundred years ago.
any deliberate activity to gain academic advantage, [...]
Well, if you really get down to it, buying the class textbook gives you an academic advantage over students who cannot afford to buy the class textbook.
Collaboration is not cheating. Everyone handing in the same assignment would be cheating.
Of course, this will be as unstable as it gets, but are you sure stability is what you want?
What I want? After stumbling around with a small, unstable company for 7 years, with virtually nothing to show for it (heck, the owners, now in their 30s and 40s, still live at home with their mom), I think it's what I NEED.
I work for a small company. My current job isn't stable, and doesn't pay well, so I'm taking an IT course so I can land a (hopefully) stable job/career.
However... in my current job I wear all kinds of hats. Server's down? I'll fix it. Marketing materials need to be designed? I'll do it. Proposal needs to be edited? I'm there. Computer needs more RAM? I'll install it. Photo of product needs to be masked-out? Done. Need to do some research? I'll get on it.
The kind of job I'm being trained for... I'll be stuck on the straight and narrow, handling one sort of task. When companies want an IT guy, they want an IT guy. I don't know how I'll be able to handle that. I LIKE having different responsibilities. I don't want to be one guy on an org chart with a specified duty.
They could remove the license costs, this way it would be cheaper for manufacturers to make HD-DVD compatible devices and equipment, which would make HD-DVD more widespread and popular.
How would that benefit Toshiba?
They spent hundred of millions developing and marketing HD-DVD. They're not going to let everyone else eat their dinner for free.
Go ahead and listen to Celine Dion all day, if that's what you fancy.
Alternative tastes? Sure, I love plenty of indie and alternative music, but I usually turn it to classic rock at the office. That's about as mainstream as it gets.
But why the hell am I replying to an anonymous coward?
My experience (and probably many of yours) is starting with a computer from the Apple II, Atari, Commodore era. Wrote high school term papers on a typewriter. In college I did amber screen work and wrote papers with a dot matrix printer... The rise of the Linux desktop feels comfortable to me.
This middle-aged woman at the office listens to the "E-Z Rock" radio station. That's because it feels comfortable to her. She grew up with stuff like that.
Me? I turn that shit off the moment I get the chance.
The problem with streaming is that you're stuck with what they're offering. My girlfriend has video on demand, and really wanted to watch a certain movie with me. When I came over to watch it, it had already been removed from the library.
The promise of "every movie, ever" is bullshit, and will be for the foreseeable future.
Betamax - fucked themselves - now deal with VHS gear I'll give you that.
Minidisc - fucked themselves - now deal with CDs You're completely wrong on this one. MiniDisc flopped in America. It was HUGE in Europe and Asia. It wasn't intended to replace CDs, but to replace cassette tapes as a recordable medium.
Also, Sony co-developed Compact Disc with Philips, even if only in the later stages. So you may as well add that to their portfolio.
Memory Stick - fucking crap - everyone else deals with SD, waiting for them to realize they are fucking themselves I don't see them abandoning Memory Stick anytime soon.
Blueray - nothing exciting - everyone is still basically on DVDs with no incentive to change But it is leading the competitor, HD-DVD, by a wide margin.
Even if you come up with a clever test that would pierce the illusion, one would have to assume whoever maintains the illusion would simply fix it so that didn't work a second time.
Good point. You HAVE no real choices. But Ron Paul isn't a viable substitute. It's like replacing your dog, who won't stop shitting on the floor, with an untamed raccoon.
Ron Paul is the answer to America's problems in the same way that narcotics are the answer to life's problems. You have a wild and crazy trip, but then you crash hard when you wake up to reality biting you in the ass.
Last month I bought a printer at Future Shop. It was a great deal. Then they wanted $30 for a 6' USB cable. I said, "Thanks, but I don't need one."
I took the printer, and walked across the street to a dumpy local computer place. I bought a 10' USB cable from them for $5, and since they saw me coming from Future Shop they laughed (knowing the situation) and knocked the tax off too.
NEVER, EVER buy cables from Future Shop, Best Buy, or any other place like that.
I'm not an audiophile. My girlfriend and I started buying plenty of vinyl this year at garage sales and second-hand stores (scuffs and all). It's simply more enjoyable to sit down around a record player than to sit down around a CD player.
I still don't completely understand why SP1 takes 4 times as long to install as Vista itself.

What the...? What kept you sticking around for seven long years before moving on?
Loyalty, pretty much.
Of course, this will be as unstable as it gets, but are you sure stability is what you want?

See, I hate this current mode of profession.

Blah. I really went on a tangent there...
192.168.1.x is enough for me.
Bah! 10.x.x.x is enough for me!
If China does HD-DVD, you can say sayonara to Blurry, because the 'CH' stands for CHEAP!
Cheap, as in inexpensive. Or Cheap, as in falls apart after 6 months?
Like most of the no-name Chinese crap I see at Tiger Direct, I'd avoid it.
...but thankfully I don't need Dr. Who the moment it comes out.
BBC's show are outrageously priced on DVD as it is. I can't imagine what they'll cost on Blu-ray.

This is what I wanted to say. Sony Music is fairly autonomous.
If teenager breaks your window, you can blame the parents for not controlling him, but it's still the teen acting out on his own.
iTunes works fine for me under SP1. Which version are you using?
Go ahead and listen to Celine Dion all day, if that's what you fancy.

Maybe you don't watch movies over and over (I don't either), but some people do watch movies over and over.
A friend of mine has a kid, and he must have watched March of the Penguins 50 times. Star Wars, even more.

That, or they call it a "feature".
No third world country would want a machine from the 1960's.
It would probably cost more to transport the beast there than to buy a new, smaller, equivalent machine.
Maybe where YOU come from.

That way people can still make calls, but nobody knows if they receive them.
You obviously don't have a girlfriend.
"I was trying to call you for two hours and you DIDN'T PICK UP!! I KNOW YOUR PHONE WAS ON!! ARE YOU SEEING SOMEONE!!!?"
