  1. Re:Maths and speed reading... on How can we Keep Our Teachers Updated? · · Score: 1

I'll refrain from screaming about eleitism at the notion of this, but as the son and grandson of educators I can see very large problems with this notion. First of all people learn in diffent ways. You apparently have a very strong aptitude for self-education. This is wonderful, and will make your life much easier. I on the other hand find it easier to learn through group work and through asking the teacher questions.

Differnt subjects are also easier to learn by yourself then others. In general I have found this to be true of IT. We love to explore, and because we usualy have tools to do so (I'm on mine right now). Can you say the same about micro-biology?

Schools also continue to teach general education for other reasons.. including to do exactly what you are thankful for: introducing people to their subject of their passion. This subject is different for every person. For you it may be science, math, or some form of IT, but for others it may very well be history or anthropology.

Although there are a multitude of other reasons that schools continue to teach other classes, the last one I am going to touch on is that especialy
with subjects like history, everyone needs to know some. You cannot make analytical judgements about current events without knowing the background that leads up to the events.

P.s. don't forget the most important reason that school systems are still teaching in the old method... they don't WANT to change.

Besides the several reasons stated in the question (exposure to toxic conditions lessened by knowledge of area, ect.) there is also the possibility of simulating combat, which is always invaluible.

The problem I see with this and most of the other solutions is ballence. Have you actulay ever tried walking on a slippery floor? You _SLIP_ (imagine that) and _FALL_. Unless you add some rather significant resistance to the berings in the proposed meshes you will have the same problem. Your feet will go flying out from under you if you try to put any significant ammount of pressure on them, causing you to adopt a new way of movement to avoid that (at which point the whole discussion is null and void again). The idea is to make this as close to reality as possible.

    heh.
While we may not be the biggest community in the gaming market, the descent community has been virtualy held hostage to 3dfx because the only accelerated version of descent 1 or 2 was for glide. So if you wanted a pretty game, you had to go 3dfx.

glide and it's future matters to us (though perhaps not for very much longer.. the source for d1 was released and d2 will be soon)

"If anything good can come from such a tragedy, it will be the liberal adults losing influence and the heavy hand of discipline lowering the boom
on all of those so called "young adults" in the US public schools."

Dicipline is good, but need not be heavy handed. I am a 17 year old third degree blackbelt, and the only thing on a daily basis that keeps me from killing people with my bare hands is dicipline and respect for other's. I don't chafe under this dicipline, or under others.

There is a reason for this. The dicipline that I live under is self imposed, and LEARNED though eight hard years of loving teaching. Not imposed by a horsewhip.

You can not impose dicipline in those who do not have it. You can only teach it.
