    I like the idea that slashdot was compromised. I'm sure it took skill and extreme ability to do so. Tack on the fact that They didn't rm -rf or install any trojans (i'm assuming) or didn't post a 4 page summary of everything that is morally wrong about slashdot, or even worse, an ASCII picture of natilie portman, shows they are intelligent. Good work. I look forward to seeing how you got in, and for having the guts not to do anything stupid. Thank you.

    From what i understand, a Laser etched chip would be way to small for a home user to modify. but, what about those in university labs or other semi-commonly accessable Equipment.

    okay, i just timed it down to the second. Windows 2000 took 2 min and 14.5 seconds to boot from video card init to login prompt.

    Linux took 1 min and 22.7 seconds from init to prompt.
    I really don't know why windows takes so long to load.. oh well, since i'm in linux most (99.9%) of the time anyways, its not too much of a problem. but i do wonder why.. i may look under the hood and tweak it a bit. ;-}

    I don't know about linux taking longer then windows. Usually it takes less then a miniute and a half for my computer to go through the bios, pause for 5 seconds while lilo gives a chance to choose windows or linux, then load the kernel, modules, start services, etc. to a login prompt (Redhat 6.2).

    It's much faster then the 5 mins it takes for windows (2000 Professional)

    I have an AMD k6-2 350 with 64M RAM. not bad, IMHO.

    Seriously though, If you are going to criticise "sheep" mentality or gripe about how the use of certian buzzwords are used, do it right, don't use a combination of slashdot troll posts and 2600 (no offense you 2600'ers out there ;-} ) propaganda to make yourself sound like a total moron.

    okay, mods need to moderate this up. i mean, come on, this was an intelligantly written opposing viewpoint, and while it may not align with the view of the vocal majority, it still has its points, and appears to be written in seriousness, instead of being written to draw flaim. THIS is what slashdot was about, education, debate. not "i'm moderating you down because you don't agree with me or i don't like your viewpoint. " While i think this poster is a bit uneducated or misinformed, he still deserves to have his (or her, sorry for the bias ;-} ) view at the level of at LEAST 1, so that the anti-toll people who read at a 1+ threshold can see the article.

    Think about it a sec. " A minimum of capital and organisation is necessary to move offshore. "
    that means the companies would increse prices to make up for the profit losses. Plus you add in Import and shipping taxes, and you see the prices of goods increse consideribally. For a good example, think about what would happen to thge prices if one of the popular companies,, say Coca-Cola© moved to Denmark, or France.

    No matter what the group, it can be a solitary group for years, but when it gets noticed, there will be many people who will jump on the bandwagon, this is what happened to the linux community. there will be the group yelling "I am a Linux User, Hear me ROAR! BRING DOWN M$", but then their will be the other, smaller group of people who spend hours coding, devloping and working behind the scenes. these are the true linux people. sort of the difference between "script kiddies" and "hackers" and the ever elusive (but relevant to this story) "true elite hackers" who write/discover/work-untill-their-fingers-bleed on the stuff that the script kiddies abuse, and the hackers use. That will never change. People want to stand on the shoulders of the dedicated greats who formed the object of their ego.

    If nobody speaks, except a small minority, then only the small minority's voice will be be heard, instead of the majority.

    And you can't stop everyone from voting. Therefore, get more people to vote, not less. the majority will be heard better.
