Microsoft have done an excellent job, with Money>=99. I keep a small Windows PC for the sole purpose of running this software. It has excellent features such as budgeting, cash-flow reviews, etc. - much more than similar programs, and has saved me more than the $100 I paid for it. I am interested in using an open source solution, but I am not interested in losing functionality, no matter how noble a cause.
At my company, we have implemented a far more effective policy: If employee x doe not perform his or her duties, employee x is relieved. Regardless of what websites I visit, I am considered close to irreplaceable based on my work ethic and corporate knowledge. I take a week off, and the place falls apart. I am sure this applies to many Slashdotters. If you need to use a search engine to determine whether or not someone is productive, they are probably not all that productive.
Try reading the paper before you post. It is one of the best things I have read on the subject, and addresses the things that are being "pointed out" in previous posts.
(not a troll, just a recommendation)
the "new software" sounds remarkably like a database. As far as the article states, the purpose is "to see whether their kids skipped class, handed in their homework and even what they had for lunch." This information is already available to parents. The fact that it's on a database, denotes efficiency, not espionage.
I would rather have a high definition projector in place of any other display. I could point it in numerous directions, resize the viewable area, etc. Most of the new "gadgets" seem to involve the use of small displays. A portable dvd player that enabled me to watch movies on the ceiling would be much more likely to win me over, than anything requiring me to squint.

Eric Corley can publicly say "Fuck General Motors". That by itself is allowed in the US by the 1st amendmant. The fact that the phrase "does something" by way of pointing to ford is entirely too abstract for archaic law to moderate.
I can never figure out why the authorities seem to be so interested in who's looking at pornography.
India is the worlds largest supplier of illict opium, yet they want to spend their law enforcement budget hunting purveyors of t&a ?
So Microsoft views GPL as an 800lb gorilla squatting between them and global domination...? They are right about one thing: Open source is an "intellectual-property destroyer". (They neglect to point out that intellectual-property is an innovation destroyer).
UGO obviously anticipate a class action and are trying to limit the number of class members with the waiver. You could wait and see if anyone else initiates a class action suit, and then become a class member for little or no legal expense. Here is the general idea of how this works. Here is a bunch of BS,about how rich UGO will be by 2001;)
While providing a one size fits all kernel in their OS, Microsoft's first listed "concern" with Linux in this article is "Limited Device Driver Support" ? ?
The Lord of the Rings movies look excellent. Not too long ago, we all watched the Episode 1 trailer, and then were rather disappointed by that movie, and disgusted by the hype:quality ratio. The Lord of the Rings movies may not have a fan base substantial enough to generate major hype, but the quality should be amzazing. Again I feel the lure of trailers.
The major marketing difference between apple and wintel, is the number of companies it takes to deliver a product.
Nobody wants to run production on Intel, and why would I dump HP-UX or Solaris in favor of Linux, voiding my support contract in the process? This article has a lot of vision, but what Linux needs is the warrantied support of a chip manufacturer.
(note: If the author is mainly refering to personal computers, I would question his reference to "the IT Industry" which the last time I checked, included but was not defined by PC sales.)

We are all already "in space" - Moreover, "Trips away from the Earth" would have a much better appeal.
I'm sure they have to sign waivers first

I know this sounds lame, but it works. Cinch *something* VERY tightly around the drive.
