The only thing that should be sent by SMS are "short mesages" with accordingly small content. Asking someone out on a date is nearly guaranteed to fail if you're a boy. If you can't manage to ask a girl out in person then you probably won't be able to talk to her intellectually for an evening and just stare at her stunning beaty. By the way girls like to get attention and asking them out to a date is only going to get you a "no" or "yes". Or if they are really evil a "maybe next time". Which if you are in love fail to recognize as "never". SMS is perfect for telling you are late or the meeting place has changed. But anything else than that it can lead to so many misunderstandings. But as a way to learn new technology and as a cheap in both senses of the word communication it works perfect. Also since there is a 160 character limitation to SMS messages you are to bound to always cut out some vital information. One short advice: If start to send 2 SMS msg's in a row because you had so much to say then call the person.
Well W2K has been "released" for a while ago, so not having a trial copy does not apply. Actually it's just that people who read/. have a general dislike of windows. So if you have a problem with that stop reading/.! And if you truly are a geek you will understand the geek humour in many of the postings. Everyone who is seriously programming knows that a bug can be anything from completely unimportant to mission critical.
It's to show that Slashdot still will post offending articles and not be made into a VA lapdog. It's all a conspiration to show that Slashdot still is an independent newssite.
Of course it would have to be www.rotten.com with a really rotten smell!

I honestly have to agree. Even though I despise AOL and their profilation. I thought that at least the guys posting the news could try to be unbiased. If I want biased news I'd just go to www.msn.com...
Atari will be remembered forever as the commercial sign that appears at least 6-7 times in Blade Runner. Watch closely and you will see the light (green neon sign).:)
There is a Quicktime player for Linux, but it doesn't support commercial compression so most movie previews are useless still it could be worth at try... Don't ask me about a link cause I don't remember:( Then again try Google:)
A cluster of many computers distributing the computations. It only works for processes where you can divide the problem up into many small parts. Like cracking passwords.
The proplem is time. It takes time to hack. Just as everything else takes time. Solving criminal mysteries or falling in love. Both are solved easily in movies. The hero finds all the clues in half an hour and the stars fall in love after 2 hours. The reason why for example a crime movie can be interesting, is that it looks cool. Though to a police detective it's a good laugh. It usually takes weeks to get forensics or interview all the suspects. So time has to be cut down. In "hacking" movies this is solved by letting the hero find the password at once. To make a realistic hacking movie, one would have to hire a french movie director who is tired of making movies about love and sit him in front of a computer.(If you've ever seen one of the looong-stretched french movies you know what I mean) The other solution is to accept the illusion. To reccomend a movie about hackers try "Hackers" from MGM.
I have set up a linux box for my father (52) and the experience I've had is that icons together with easy applications is a good choice. If the net connection is a dial-up one create an expect script that dials the ISP and make it response insesitive. If your father clicks to often it doesn't matter. Create another icon for shutting it down. Now Netscape is a good choice for mail and browsing. It has an easy interface. For text, I suppose you mean simple letters so nothing like Emacs or Lyx is necessary. So create an icon on the desktop for netscape and a text editor. And set the resolution to 640x480. That should be a viable solution for your father. And one more thing remove everything else on the desktop. That singles down malclicking and confusion. So when you father wants more "power" just create an icon on the desktop. (CD player...) And remember use graphical login with user: grandpa pass: grandpa:)

Try everything2.com and search for it there. They have a lot of explanations for obscure terms.

Note quite: "Sore wa" means "That". So the exact translation would be: "That is a secret!" Just being pedantic... :)
Just wondering if you knew what "Sore wa HIMITSU desu?" means. (I do)
