except that this is only available if and only if your exchange has taken part in LLU (local link unbundling). For those of us not in a big city we are years away from this happening. If BT runs your exchange your isp has to pay BT wholesale extortion rates. This is why the unlimited plans went away.

No cos it wont let you edit the parameters of a printer once its added (at least for remote LPD ones) so get anything worng and its add a new printer grrrrr
btw does any one know how to tell cups that it has to change the username of the printing job before sending it to an lpd host? I have to print with lpr -U daveh but i can not find where to add that in the OSX print dialog (works fine on console) or what the option to put in the printers.conf file is
good troll:) but seriously this has happened to me 3 times so far and i am sure it will happen again from <http://www.bolthole.com/solaris/> the source of pkg-get pkg-get: An automated tool to grab solaris packages from sites that support its catalog format. Modeled after Debian linux's "apt-get".
my problem with pkgadd is that even if an installation fails it still thinks that the pkg has been successfully added ie there is no way of saying tell me what installations failed. This is just wrong. If at any point the install fails then the pkg should not be installed (ideally it should back out)
arg pkg-get and pkgadd is a very bad copy of apt-get its very crufty try the following almost fill up/opt pkg-get a large package (that will fill up the/opt and still need more space) watch the pkg installation fail (ungracefully)
free up some space pkg-get install the package again hmm wats that its already installed to the latest version ok so we need to remove it pkgrm $broken_pkg pkg-get -i $pkg have it install successfully argggg (its even worse if this happens during a pkg-get -U -u as *lots* of pkgs will be broken and you have to manually remove them then reinstall them.
QUICKSILVER go get it now never ever use the mouse again expose current app (F10 by default) or normal expose then hit tab apple tab and apple ~ apple tab to swtich app apple ~ to switch windows in current app (I Wish metacity had this) also note that apple tab can then be moused
With the ubove I never ever use the dock and should really turn it off. but then as you can guess I am a kbd person
nah there is nothing stopping proprietary systems using apt. In fact I wish sun + oracle + ibm would provide there own apt source for debian and include the dependencies that they need There is username and password support in apt so you can still charge for things. It would just provide a level playing field. It would be possible on a proprietary system to have all software installed via something similar to apt and have the installer add more locations to search. Then you could update everything in one place. The design of apt is outstanding in this regard.

you are about as wrong as you can get i have no idea how you got modded up. My mythbox has a dvb-t card that records the DVB stream to disk no conversion it records the raw mpeg stream (and is only powered by a celery 533). You should RTFM first http://www.ethics-gradient.net/myth/mythdvb.html
no i dont not like osx its just not as much of a unix as I would like.
The only not X11 thing is the select middle click and i wish there was a way to turn that on then I would be happy. I have looked for an app to do this but can not find it anywhere.
the other bits are a bit of pain but not too bad however
everyone always rants about how good and consitant macs are supposed to be easy to use as the menu options between each app are similar yet in osx version of X11 comand click == right mouse
um no its lack of consistancy between X apps and 'native apps'
it chews a lot of ram and doesnt have very good swap performance
the 'native' apps have no way of telling them to behave like unix app ie single button selction and paste
flakey file systems that made the machine un bootable and a few kernel panics as I said the hardware is fantasic the os is good but not great for a unix geek its certanly not a X11 tookit issue
I thought that switching to os X from linux would be good so i got a shiny powerbook G4 however after using it for a while I have to say im not that impressed and will probably stick debian on it soon why?
middle button select/paste grrrrrr its suposed to be a unix
ctrl click is right click in mac aps but not in X where its command click
stupid keyboard no # key excellent try commenting stuff with that (ok its alt 3 but its not labled an where) weird +/- and squiggle key that I have never used of seen on any other keyboard ~ in the wrong place.
ram shipped with 256 wich was very very slow alsmost as slow as my old 300Mhz 192Meg laptop
Stability its just not as stable as my old linux laptop yes its better that win32 but I have had a few lockups and kernel panics (less since i added more ram) hard disk curroption that ment machine would not boot
however the hardware is beatiful i like the firewire target mode all the ports
expose rocks quicksilver also rocks but I would be less tempted now to reccoment a mac to hardcore unix geek over a good laptop running linux
I take it you don't use solaris. I do it sucks big time packages break in odd ways compiling things from source is a pain and suns version of desktops such as gnome are way way behind the curve forcing us to use blastwaves packages which have there own oddness (mime types don't work in nautilus!) Man I wash sunray server software would work on linux and then we could have up to date less buggy desktop it would be fantastic
I kept my keyboard alive for years after spilling things on it. The tracks became erroded but some conductive paint soon fixed it (also good for the heated windows on cars its "correct" pupose. Just look on the plastic layer for where the track has oxidised
hmm
