Excellent question. AOL should be thrown into that question as well (I agree AOL sucks overall, but many businesses use it for their traveling folks).
Monday, our DSL provider had big DNS issues. Still having problems today. We have setup ICS with a 56k modem as a temporary fix. The only hassle is ICS doesn't play with our traveling AOL account, so what dial-up account do we use?
Fortunately, my old dialup account is still active, even though I cancelled it when I got DSL at home. So we're dialing up to my non-existent (ahem) account and folks can get their email and all is happy.
BUT, if we didn't have the shadey dial-up account, we'd be screwed. Hardware solutions like this are neat, but must support free services (even if they won't be around for long) and AOL.
On a side note, I have an SMC router at home for my DSL LAN- I chose it cause it has a print server too, which is way cool, and it's competitive with the usual Linksys/DLink offerings. Does anyone make such a broadband 'router' that *also* has a built-in 56k modem? My SMC router has a port to connect one, but that requires yet another plug in the overloaded surge protector. Built in would be cool. From posts here, 3Com offers such a thing? Broadband router AND 56k?
Too bad 3Com product generally suck (what is the DEAL with the prices for their NIC's?).
But you neglect to mention the OTHER ruling!
Yes, 7-2 that the recount rules were insufficient. I agree!
But, 5-4 that the recount could CONTINUE. The SCOTUS should have sent it back to FLA to and have them define the precise recount methods (and, IMO, they should have NOT counted dimples/preggers/etc, just stick to hanging chads and clear votes-and Gore STILL would have won).
The SCOTUS showed their partisanship by not allowing Florida to come up with recount procedures and try to finish. They likley wouldn't have, and the legislature would have picked their own electors, and the resuts would have been the same.
BUT the SCOTUS should NOT have prevented Florida from doing the recountvia revised/agreed rules. In doing so, they played politics, not judges.
....finally to the spectacle of the "states rights" party applauding the Supremes' federal coup halting the recount because, in words that will haunt Scalia forever, a recount might cast "a cloud upon what [Bush] claims to be the legitimacy of his election." Think about that. In other words, if Gore ended up with more votes, a cloud would be cast on Bush's claims.

Most of us leave our computers on all night too, but that's necessary- our backup jobs run overnight (client to server), as well as maintenance (ScanDisk, SpeedDisk, AV scans/updates, SETI;). So no way computers are getting shut off.
But monitors, even in sleep mode, are still using power- feel the tops of the monitors when you get into work and think of the power used and the lifetime reduction.

Pointless, but yes, mail/news need BIG improvements.
It's really sad to release this as a final Netscape product when things just don't work (much less missing shortcuts and such).
Does anyone know if the new version allows import of Netscape email folders and messages? I've not been able to find out how to accomplish this as of yet.
I installed Netscape 6, cause M18 rendered mail/news horribly here (Win98) and N6 did much better.
I simply copied the contents of my mail/news/local folders from the Netscape User folder to the Mozilla folder and all worked fine. Be aware the Mozilla Users folder is installed to
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Users50
and there doesn't seem to be a way to change that, despite where you actually install N6.

I listen to the radio alot, simply because I grow tired of my CD/MP3 collections fairly quickly. I like non-top40 stations cause I hear a good mix of music I may otherwise not hear...especially if there's a good college station around.
The things that bug me most about radio- DJ's and commercials. I'm listening to a music radio station cause I want to hear music! Not because I wanna hear how witty the DJ is, or to hear the same damn commercials over and over again.
A few years ago, an uncle who works for the cable industry showed me cable radio. I fell in love (not with my uncle, with cable radio;).
WOW! Constant, non-stop music with artist, album, etc info fed right to the remote...hot damn!
Ok, sometimes they get repeatative as well, but that's just something that needs changing on their end, and doesn't discount the value of constant radio.
So, I don't care if my constant, commercial and DJ-free radio is received via radio waves, satellite, CDMA, cable, DSL, whatever... as long as I don't have to hear people TALK on my MUSIC stations.
Of course, this doesn't apply to NPR, whose discussions I greatly respect, but no reason that can't be streamed too, eh? Well, money.
Finally, there are websites that allow people to setup their own radio stations which is great too. Why even deal with a legacy radio station when I can tune into 123.456.789.0 and hear Joe Shmoe's CD collection?
The only advantage of radio is true streaming- no congestion backups...but as the net advances, this will be negated too.

I do agree, along those lines, and tis one thing that's bothered me for a while:
If the folks we elect are 'representatives', then they should represent my opinion. Or at least (and realistically), the majority of the opinion of their specfic constituents.
Thus, candidates should NOT be elected based on their personal opinions. Ethics, accountability, attendence, etc- no doubt. But their personal opinions should NEVER be a factor if they're to truly represent their particular voters.
However, pre-net, this was largely impossible.
With the advent of the web, however, soon it may be possible for a local representative to actually know the opinions of their constituents. Every time there's an issue before congress, a week before the candidates should have an opinion poll on their website- for their particular voters only- which would represent how those rep's should cast their vote.
True democracy! (given that everyone has net access;).
Would this take some of the wind from your argument? Would this make our system more truly representative?

Man, I could see an entire website for such a concept. Where were you last year?!;)
Votes are indeed close to wasted in locked states, but those of you in the swing states, please set aside your rebellion and vote Gore. The damage Bush will do to the environment, our IP laws, and general societal advancement could very well be irreversable.
uh, great thoughts?
It's an interesting perspective to say that by not voting, you can complain, because you're not being represented.
The common retort to this would be, how can you be represented if you don't vote?
You cleverly answer that since democracy is a 'sham', you'll never be truly represented.
So it seems to me you have a couple choices;
1. Never vote and complain all you want, but don't be surprised when society shuns one who always whines, yet never does anything to change their situation.
2. Do something about it- be a radical, start a revitalized communist, socialist, or whatever-group-you-feel-works movement which you feel will represent you.
3. Get the fuck out* of my country and go live somewhere that you feel is a better representation of your beliefs. I have no problem with one less whiner in our masses.
*no offense, but I find your little diatribe completely self-serving, shortsighted, and without merit;)
What we really need are intelligent voters who aren't affected by sound bites. Anyone who still clinges to the 'Al invented the intenet' quote to cast Gore's character in doubt is obviously not an informed nor intelligent being.
It is the folks who want to take guns away that are the greatest threat to our freedom... because they want to take away ALL of our rights except the right to politically correct speech, and the right to any sort of sex we want.
That's quite a leap! But not too off-target for the typical non-lucid Bush supporter.
What this is about is compassion. Liberals may not always have the most realistic ideas, but at least they're seated in compassion. Conservatives, on the other hand, always ever seem to think with their wallets.
Maybe that's what America is all about, but it sure ain't the way I see it. How depressing
Yeap, both are rich white boys who've led privileged lives. What's changed in American politics?
However, Gore entered this public arena early. And hey, when he started at the House- he sold all his stocks- cause he thought it constituted a conflict of interest.

Selling tech to Chinese- maybe, well, sure. Wish I had time to find the link, but recent report indicated the Chinese were on track to develop such tech anyway- so why not let our companies profit first?
Rampant drug use- ya, sure, and the Reaganites weren't all coked up in the 80's. I'll take Clinton pot smokers over Reagan cokeheads ANY day. Plus, what's been proven?
Nat'l Security- that definitely needs improvement, no doubt. Gore will get on it next year. However, I submit that regardless of the president, it would have happened anyway. With the explosion of the 'information age', it would have been a miracle for any administration to totally secure our 'secrets'.
Corruption of liberal media- what are you talking about? The media has always been largely liberal (I believe because they actually see life how it is, and not as conservatives imagine). What corruption? They've done a fine job taking the pols to task...
Scandal after Scandal- will not ever stop. Everyone has a scandal or two; just til now, we didn't have the means to compile a persons entire history in a few days. Clinton made a lot of dumb moves- I don't respect him as a person. But as a president, I have little to complain about (overall;).
Sexual harrasement- goes to the above. He's an idiot. His wife probably whips him on a whim. Whatever, he's still doing a fine job.
Military readiness- needs to be kept up, but doesn't need drastic improvement, from what I've read. Build a few more ships, couple hundred tanks, few hundred planes- and KEEP investing in tech, as we've been doing- and we're good. There's NO need to return to the mindless spending (to the domestic detriment, though the 'victory' of the cold war) of the Reagan era.
We've done fine, from what I know, in our past conflicts. We need to buy/build some new things, but Bush and his hawks are way out there.
I agree- please don't waste votes on Nader. He's not gonna win, and if Bush does...we got trouble. Gore may not be the most honorable man, but hell of a lot moreso than Bush. At least he owns up to his past drug-use. And anyone who is actually aware, realizes Gore never said he 'invented the internet' and as was posted here previously, has been absolved of his mistaken comment.
Plus, with Gore, we're assured a longer lasting environment than Bush would ever uphold- "cleaned up texas'? Surely you can't imply environmentally!
Interesting, xtermz, that you realize 'take a chance with Bush or suffer 8 more years of clintonism'- cause while I'd like to agree that Gore will do two terms, IMO, the market is gonna crash hard in two years (at most) and Gore's never gonna be forgiven for it.
You republicans had best start finding a TRULY responsible and honorable person for 2005!
I dunno why the K6/2 won't boot when not plugged into the hub...like the computer doesn't POST at all? Or gets to a certain point? If no post, then you've likely got a short somewhere, which the CAT5 connection is solving (?). If hung-up, then it's probably either a protocol issue, or it's really trying to use DHCP?
The more protocols you have loaded, the longer it'll take Windows to boot. Use the minimum. Obviously, TCP/IP if you need net access. NetBEUI if you want local sharing (ONLY!), and scrap IPX/SPX unless you play an old game that needs it, or run a Novell FS.
The less things in that Network Control Panel, the quicker your system will boot.
Be sure WINS is disabled, and DHCP is not checked. Be sure all your network info is correctly entered.

Scandal after Scandal- will not ever stop. Everyone has a scandal or two; just til now, we didn't have the means to compile a persons entire history in a few days. Clinton made a lot of dumb moves- I don't respect him as a person. But as a president, I have little to complain about (overall
