Huh? Ya, and the CL Blaster 3D I have in my PC for 2D doesn't support the API either (well, can handle some basic Direct3D). That's why I bought a Voodoo2, and will upgrade to a better card next year. Do most computers come with TNT2U's nowadays? None seem to come with Voodoo cards unless you ask or buy a computer built specifically for gaming. So Mac users buy an add-on 3D card, like most PC users do. BTW, I've never bought an off-shelf puter. All mine hand built since I got into computers! So I may be off-base when talking about what computers come with nowdays....

I completely agree. If any site FORCED me to use 'assport, I surely wouldn't buy from them. There are plenty of alternatives (unless EVERYBODY uses them, but ain't gonna happen).
Yes. Smart cards I can swipe at home. Is https locked-down enough to ensure that privacy? Can the bad guys crack such a 'secure' transmission?
I need to read about Amex's Blue thing, but yeah, why not have all banks do this? I wanna buy sumptin, I swipe my credit card, the website directs it to the issuer, they bill...
Why does MS have to be involved at all?

  3. Preaching to the choir on Microsoft Launches Passport · · Score: 2

Of course no \. readers are gonna trust MS with this inane idea! Most everyone here rails against MS at every chance they get, and mostly with good reason.
The issue is, how to get the word out to all those happily blind folks who think the 'integration' MS offers is the best thing since cheese coming in indivually wrapped slices. Most every MS supporter out there likes the MS products cause they're easy to use and everyone else uses them- and they support such with the same vehemence the anti-MS crowd voices.

So, do we pray that an Open Source model of such a thing is quickly offered as an alternative? I doubt that would work as speed is not a common OS trait, and more people would be less likely to trust such a thing in today's mindset.

So who will be the alternative? Would a banking coalition be a better alternative? At least they've historically protected accounts, mostly.

Or perhaps the issue is to point out to people that simply putting your CC#'s in a pswd protected tect file on your HD, then open it, copy it, paste it, into an order site is just as quick as 'assport.
I mean, sheesh, I'm all for saving time, but it takes, what?, 3 minutes to fill out an order form online?

I would NEVER use such a service provided by ANY company which has shown such blatant disregard for the consumer as MS. Of course, 75% of the population is unaware of these tactics. So 'assport will be the default until someone cracks it and folks loose big money.
Perhaps they can apply for FDIC?

So take those removable sides down to your fav hardware store (Hechingers going outta bidness even a better idea) and have them cut plexiglass to the same dimensions. Run home, drill out the holes, maybe a little sanding..slap,bang, wigwam...a see through case. It looks even cooler if you run a short string of blinkin/flashin Christmas lights through it!
Course, I haven't motivated on this yet. HEY! I'm just the idea man...
Or so my boss keeps tellin me.

People, when faced with the loss of semantic content in domain names, no longer just type in "www.whatever.com" -- they go to google, type a couple of keywords, hit "I'm feeling lucky" and get to the site.

While that post is good overall, I disagree with the above. I've been on the 'net since the late 80's and am no newbie, yet I still try www.company.com FIRST when trying to find a specific company's site...cause 90% of the time, it's correct (at least for larger, older companies). If not, then I goto google. But how many folks on the net use google? Everyone else goes to Yahoo or whatever- with no 'lucky' button, and has to dig through massive irrelevent returns.

But other than that, I agree with yer post. On the overall subject, while I absolutely abhor racisim, I don't think its right for the NAACP to do this- for many of the reasons already stated.

  6. Go Pro on Archiving Home Movies? · · Score: 1

There are lots of companies that do this; I'm aware of two in my area alone (Annapolis, MD). If you don't have a lot of experience in digital video, leave it to the pros. To really get good quality from those old movies, you at home would have to convert it to Beta, then run it through a GOOD quality capture card from the likes of Targa, Media100, or Radius. Then edit that film with a QUALITY editor like Adobe Premiere. Then archive that data onto DVD (forget CD- the format, size, and life span isn't worth it compared to DVD).
This is all assuming these films and slides are REAL important to you. This is not a process you can do at home without spending mucho $$, unless you happen to be in that business. Plus, if you burn the film or whatever, it's gone. Business which perform these tasks have backup, repair, and if nothing else, financial guarantees.
Do a web search, or even the old telephone book. If these are really important to you and yours, go to the pros.

However. I think thin clients are a GREAT idea for the home user.
I have 3 fully-stocked (more or less) computers at home. One for me, one for the lady, and one for the kid.
I NEED a robust machine with local apps.
The wife only uses Netscape, Word, ICQ, Excel, etc. for basic things. A powerful machine is somewhat justified, but not really.
The kid uses Yahoo checkers and those First Grade educational CD's (and maybe a little Quake when the wife isn't around ;). He doesn't need a phat machine yet.
I'd LOVE to setup a power server and feed thin clients.
Could have a client in the kitched for net recipes, or ICQ with Mom as I am stepped through the meatloaf-making process.
Could have a client in the TV room so I could make a quick trade online if I hear some breakin news.
Or check out the Steelers' website for stats as I watch Monday night football.
Could have a client in the bathroom pumping out MP3's while I sh**, shower, and shave.
Could have a client in the bedroom for some online pron with my honey.
Could have a client in the workshop for online how-to manuals when building a clubhouse for the kid.
    And so on.
I will have a wired house. Right now, the three machines are wired together with 100baseT ethernet, and will soon feed out a gateway to a 460kbps DSL line. All run Windows right now, cause it's all I know. But I'm definitely psyched to try Linux or BeOS on the gateway some time.

Point is, I think thin clients will be the future of the home. A central server in the basement feeding out to a DSL or Cable line, and feeding in via Fast/Giga-ethernet. Why install the latest patches, updates, software to 3+ machines in the house?
I will never COMPLETELY go the client route- I MUST have local apps and control and stability for my development projects and Quake ;)
But I think it is certainly a viable option in the future for most household needs.
The definition of Thin Client may need to change a bit...I'm not sure what the current 'specs' are, but I definitely think the IDEA is a good one.

    ********************************
    Microsoft Security Bulletin MS99-025
    (http://www.microsoft.com/security/bulletins/MS9 9-025.asp), which was
released on July 19, 1999, discussed a vulnerability associated with
Internet Information Server and Microsoft Data Access Components. The
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page for this bulletin
    (http://www.microsoft.com/security/bulletins/MS9 9-025faq.asp) provided
instructions on how to manually change the registry in order to protect
vulnerable systems, and also provided an automated method for making the
changes. However, we have discovered that the automated method is
    incorrect.

If you manually changed the registry entries as discussed in the bulletin,
you do not need to take any further action. All of the information in the
bulletin and FAQ regarding registry keys is correct. However, if you
downloaded HANDUNSF.REG and used it to automatically change the registry,
you should download the corrected file and run it on all affected systems.
The corrected file is named HANDSAFE.REG, in order to make it easy to tell
that you are using the right file. The file can be downloaded from the FAQ
page; the link to the file is contained in the answer to "I have MDAC 2.x
    installed, what should I do?".
