Real has gotta make money somehow....their player is free, their 'plus' player costs $$, but I don't know anyone who's bought it myself. Same model as Netscape had- give away the client and try to make $$ on the backend. However, I don't like how he basic Real player incorporates ad banners- at all. It's one reason I choose WMP many times. If Real is gonna charge so much for the server, and ask for $$ for the plus player, they could certainly make effort to slim down their basic player- No Banners!
I agree completely. I've worked for 3 different companies over the past 6 years. None gives out overtime- always a 'salaried' employee. So any extra hours I work, I'm not compensated for (though fairly, 2 of 3 were cool about 'flex time'). I arrive at 8:15 and leave at 5:15, and sometimes actually use the full hour for lunch, but rarely.
I do my job well. My bosses realize that. If they're bothered that I don't stay past my 8 hours, then institute an overtime policy. Otherwise get over it, and don't hassle me unless I'm falling behind in my work.
Of course, there are emergencies. "The client needs that TOMORROW". Ok, so then I stay late til 'that' is finished. But the bosses realize they then OWE me for getting THEIR company out of a fixx. So maybe I don't come in til noon the next day.
Today, everyone is hiring. I don't WANT to skip jobs every year, and am willing to show the company loyalty. BUT they gotta give back. IMO, work is ALWAYS a two-way street. I am NOT your servant, Mr. PHB. I will do my work, I will do my work well, but you get what you pay for pal.
Super Socket 7! Ya, getting to be real old tech, but they have AGP, even 2x! And Dimm support, and USB, and IR... When building cheap systems for folks, I usually take the SS7 and AMD|P6 route- good quality, stable (some annoying patches to deal with), zippy and cheap!
...a really important lesson that I've learned over the last decade. There's knowledge waiting to be gained all around you in just about everything. There's benefit to putting yourself in an information rich environment like a university IF you've got the right attitude.
Exactly. Yes. Right ON! I hate arrogant people who feel others have nothing to contribute. (my own horn tooting) I'm a pretty swift fella, but I ALWAYS listen to the other arguments/insights. I've been enlightened many times due to such. I've also learned who doesn't know wtf they're talking about. OPEN MINDS- revel in the life around you.
It's possible to do a first person shooter like that, where it requires so much knowledge about what's going on, how things are supposed to work, strategies of all of these things, that it's just not fun to sit down and play
EXACTLY why I didn't get into HalfLife. Neat game, no doubt, cool AI too! But man, too much to learn. I don't want to figure out my R&R, I just want to jump in, frag a few, then quit and get back to work or being a Dad. No time to learn deep things about games! I still need to figure out Linux! And games that have like 20 things to bind to keys, forget it. Any more than 6 or 7 binds, and that Mod is never played again. Open Minds? At least I try them;)
Sure! And why not go further? Why doesn't the RIAA just setup it's own website for purchasing MP3's? Ok, so folks may buy an RIAA 'blessed' MP3, then simply redistribute it. Of course, people were doing the same thing with cassette tapes for YEARS. Instead of freakin' and fightin' the MP3 onslaught, go with it! General Public may very well PREFER to buy RIAA-blessed MP3's, knowing they won't get involved in any legal dispute or it's the 'standard'. Much as so many are MS lemmings... Or at least do such a commerce website for now, til you hook all the suckers, THEN move to SDMI or whatever. I don't support such heavy-handed efforts, but it would seem to be a better strategy than just bitching.
Dude, just gotta thank ya for the Marksonline link. Kickass! Been wondering if something like that existed (though more for domain searches-as it does as well). Never motivated on my own web search though. Anyway, way cool site- thanks for sharing.
Oh and ya, Linus is right, money sucks, long live the OSS, and jive with the honky momma whenever you get the chance...
Exactly. Look at drug paraphernalia. Though they've been raided over and over, such shops selling bongs, razor blades, 'stamp' baggies, and gold straws are allowed to operate in almost every state in the US. I don't know a single person who smokes tobacco out of a water pipe. But hey, it's not the shops' responsibility as to what the customer uses the paraphernalia for- something that has been supported in the courts time and time again. So if such shops exist while this aberration called the 'War on Drugs' exists (which is filling our prisons with non-voilent offenders and wrongly seizing people's property), suddenly it's wrong to sell potentially-serruptious transmission equipment? Isn't it the same thing? Odd...
>I can make WIndows out to be pretty damned defective from what I have seen it do. I can agree with this to a degree- kinda depends though on what a given person is doing with their computer, and how much of an Idiot Quotient (IQ) they posses.
I'm no fan of MS, believe you me. But I run a home LAN for my contracting work and it's all Win98- even the file and internet server. This is largely because the only other OS I'm familiar with is Mac, and even then, not to the degree I'm familiar with Windows (I don't know NT worth a damn).
At work, I also use Win98, as does everyone else, except for the NT server.
By far and above degrees, most problems I've encountered over the past 5 years are due to folks messing around where they ought not be, or doing things the 'wrong' way (like deleting app dirs instead of the Add/Remove). That is NOT to say Win98 is great- I've also encountered way odd problems that just seem to...happen (mostly seem to be memory violations?).
On my main machines at work and home, often Win98 is up and running for the week before I reboot, unless I change the config or install an app that requires such.
The web/ftp/file server at home (Win98, P133, 64ram) has been up and running for FOUR weeks without a reboot, so far.
Again, I'm no fan of MS. They obviously need to fix several things internally to be a better, more responsive company. I think the Trial was entirely justified on the merits it examined. But Win98 is not a horrible OS if you know a bit about computers. Perhaps that's the problem- it's not dumb enough?
My girl got me Caldera's OpenLinux for Xmas. Woohoo! Finally get to try this Linux thing out. With all the insecurities of Win98, I'd sure like to replace that file/ftp/net server with Linux! But first I gotta build a new machine to test it on, read lots of websites-maybe even buy a book, and figure out the install and how the hell to work with 'tarballs'...;) I very much look forward to it. But in the meantime, my work and home Windows environments continue to chug in a stable manner. And I develop multimedia training, marketing, etc- so the machines are strained daily. Sure reboots happen, but I often suspect application problems as often as I suspect OS problems. (I gave up moderating this thread to post this, but I am not a Troll!;)
Instead of beating them up at ALL, why don't they just look for other solutions? I missed the original post on this lawsuit, so forgive if this is rehash, but... Why doesn't Etoys just ask Etoy to put a "If you're looking for Etoys, click here!" banner ad on the etoy front page? I'm sure etoy would be happy to do such and bag the lawsuit... At least in the spirit of Christmas. I have emailed this suggestion to etoys, like it'll make any difference;) When searching for Diamond Multimedia (I think it was) a couple years ago, www.diamond.com didn't go there, but the front page of that website did indeed have a link to www.diamondmm.com. That's all I needed.
Not to belittle your request, but click>hilight>delete>enter in the location field and you're back at whatever higher-level directory you want! Purty easy... I for one would much rather keep the amount of buttons to a minimum. That Shop button is just freakin' ridiculous on 4.7 Fubar?
Agreed on the first part;) I dunno about clocking RAM higher than the CPU...like where a 66 FSB CPU is spec'd, yet the RAM is set to a 100mhz bus? I don't think that would work for the reasons you mention. It may not be unstable, but as the CPU path is 66, it would then be the bottleneck. Even if the RAM bus ran at 100, it would be waiting for the CPU to receive the data...right?
I have a Gigabyte TX motherboard which also uses DIP switches for most settings. I like it! So much easier to deal with than mutliple jumpers, and I ALWAYS loose a jumper cap or two when futzing. Thankfully, I can always pull a few from the 486 graveyard at work! But Abit's softmenu is the way to go, IMO. Let's burn all DIPs AND jumpers...
I don't get your drift. I could have bought a PII 450 for $160, or bought a Celeron 300a for $90. So I buy the 300a and try to overclock it and HEY it works. SO now I have a 450 system for $70 less than it would have cost had I bough the P2. Sure I miss the 128K more cache of the PII sometimes, but not really. I can keep up in Quake2 with the best of 'em;), and Photoshop filters are quick enough, for now, and sound editing and other such multimedia developing all works fine. Completely stable system, even if it is running Win98;) So considering how well it's worked out for me, and apparently many others, I don't get your rant. Why should I spend $70 more on a piece of hardware that isn't worth it? I agree some folks get a little crazy with their overclocking, but it's certainly a valid way to squeeze out more performance. Is it wrong for car entusiasts to tweak the stock engines, shocks, etc? Hell no, it's accepted practice. As should be OC'ing if you're willing to accept the risk. I was, and am happy I did (and could afford the SoundBlaster Live with da money I saved). I also saved $30 by buying an AMD K6-2 350 and OC'ing it to 400. Why not? That's $30 still in my pocket. Guess it all silly though if your wealthy. ?
My FIC 503+...there are indeed jumpers for the RAM bus speed. I have PC100 RAM in there as it's running an AMD K6-2 350@400Mhz (4x100). The RAM bus speeds options are the same as the FSB settings, I think. So I could OC the RAM as well, but I don't think that would be a wise idea. I have heard of folks stabily running PC66 RAM at 100 though- though rare. My main machine is a BX 300a@450. So while FSB settings are spec'd at 66, it's clocked to 100. But as you say, FSB and RAM bus speeds are the same with the BX chipset, so setting one sets both. The FIC (using VIA MVP3 chipset) does allow different settings for RAM and FS Bus however.
I'm one. I'm a Win98 user pretty much. I'd love to try Linux, but just don't have the time yet. If I get OpenLinux (Caldera) for Xmas, then I'll make the time. I have an old P66 sitting in the corner, perfectly functional (well, needs some parts) waiting to try Linux. If I don't get Caldera's distro for Xmas, I'll be buying the Q3/SuSE distro the next day! I think it's a great idea (though I wish they would release the Win32 and Linux on same CD. Then when you send in the registration card, you could mark off which OS you're using). Duh?
Nice to do. When I checked it, I simply did a google search for Canadian Restaurants and got a list and went to a site and used their phone number's area code. I did restaurants cause they rarely have 800 numbers which screws it all up. Or maybe 800 is taken as *? And folks who criticize this guy for missing a few- sheesh, relax folks. He was being helpful, not slighting anyone. A lot of you \. readers could really use a case of those chill-pills. Or maybe they stopped production in 1994.
Eval copies? What good are they for really learning anything? Unless it's simply a nag message, I don't bother loading demo software, especially an OS, on any of my computers. I play for a day, then get sucked into something else...by the time I get back to it, I have 1 day left! I HATE timed demos... Good point on the trade shows, and I've only been to a few...but most software I get there is demo software too!! The best place to get cheap software are those computer shows that come around. Yeap, I'd say at least 50% of that software is illegal, but it's functional for the 'poor college student'. The information and support is out there, as you mention, but getting full-fledged, LEGAL software is NOT an easy task- at least, in my experience (course, now I work for a multimedia company, so I have- I mean, I work with- most all software I need;).
I don't really need huge advances in interface efficiency. The needs you specify are cool by me. I'd love to be able to dictate my email, navigate the web via voice, click 'Forward' without having to actually click...and hey, tell me speech rec in FPS games wouldn't be cool as heck (maybe not JUST, but in addition to the other controllers- "Switch RL! Fire! Crouch! Fire! Jump! Fire!";)
But I totally agree with you when it comes to coding...or maybe not. Hmmmm, depends on how well it works. I could handle hitting Enter to CR to the next line, then saying the line of code- if it worked well, that would be uber-kool.
Finally, keyboards will become fairly obsolete sometime. Maybe not due to speech rec though...thought processes? Back to the embedded devices again... I want to be able to talk to my puter like they do in Star Trek someday. And I bet I'll be alive to see it, and won't need to use my keyboard for anything except to...ummmm...code?
I didn't find that article very interesting at all. Neat ideas, but (even without the repeated areas) I think he could have made his point in 4 or 5 paragraphs. It was just a lot of rambling, IMO. This guy doesn't have a journalist background, does he? My prof would have ripped such a paper to shreds. To actually comment on the meat of the article, I kinda like my Win keyboard. It took a while to relearn when I made the unfortunate move from the Mac to the PC for work, but not too long. I agree the Caps Lock key could be totally relocated- swapped with the ESC key sounds good to me! The only problem I have with the Windows key is hitting it once in a while while playing Quake, which minimizes the game and shows the desktop. NOT a good thing! Ack! Alt-Tab! Alt-Tab! But I guess I could always bind it to something else (can you bind the Windows key in the Q2 config?). I'm used to my PC keyboard, and work with it fine. I could remap using programs, but then any other computer I work on, I'd stumble. Nah. Of all the evils PC's have brought us, I havenno problem with the keyboard. I'm just waiting for solid speech rec- and no, I won't be implanting any freakin devices into my head so I don't have to move my hands!
I sum, I agree with the above definition completely. I develop multimedia CBT. Our testing is internal and with SME's (Subject Matter Experts) throughout development. At alpha, the product is realively 'ready' and undergoes overall usability and tech testing for a week with internal folks not assigned to the particular project, and with SME's as well at the location of their choice. At beta, the program is ready to go 'live' in our opinion, so we give it to a sample of the target audience. We allow 1 week for their review, then 2 weeks to implement changes/fixes they find/suggest (SME's being pretty much the last say on that, unless it's out of scope for the project). Once those changes are made, SME reviews final and signs-off, and product is 'gold'
I haven't seen this addressed yet, though it may be by AC's or posted by the time this is...
How about the idea of prohibiting MS from making any further aquisitions? Or limiting such aquisitions to, say, 5 a year?
I think it's generally accepted that MS does little 'innovation' on its own (I am getting REAL sick of that word), but simply buys, copies or outright steals a competitors' technology and integrates it. Indeed, it may be argued that if MS does any innovation at all, it's limited to integrating several different technologies into one overall OS. While no small feat, it is not that critical of a talent.
As many others mention, forcing MS to document ALL their API's and distribute them freely would be a good way to allow others to offer truly competitive products (I'd LOVE to use Netscape as my overall interface instead of IE- why can't I?;). I think such a free documentation and distribution of MS API's in conjunction with limiting their aquisitions- and maybe a nominal fine to pay off the governments expenses at bringing this trial- would be a fair and effective way to settle to issue.
Oh shut up. -FBI files: It hasn't been done in the past? This was the first time a prez got info from the FBI? Sure... This was just the first time the Prez (or his underlings) were busted. Just like the intern-sex. Clinton was the first unfaithful US prez...sure... And regardless, SO WHAT? It wasn't 'fair'? -Individuals jailed: Point me to the evidence? This is the first I've heard of such a thing! -Using FBI/IRS for persecution: Again, show me some evidence. What kind of persecution are you talking about? -Waco: I'm pretty aware and up on the news, and I hadn't heard of Waco as a problem spot until the 'siege' began. "US military forces"- who? The ATF? Before posting such silly arguements, you should have facts (or at least coherent reasoning) to back them up.
How many terrorist acts haven't occured because of Echelon? Those we never hear about coz the gubment doesn't publicize (often) terrorists that are caught before they commit a crime...guilty until proven innocent? If ever actually given a trial... Ok. City and Columbine were internal acts (or so everyone believes). Echelon monitors international traffic. No reason any within the US should worry about this, eh? Only if you're calling/emailing/etc overseas. I seriously doubt most of my general email, posts, and Quake traffic flips overseas before arriving at it's US destination. The one they SHOULD have caught was the World Trade Center bombing- that was international terrorism (or so everyone believes). Perhaps those jerks relied on carrier pigeons.
Capital- is a place Capitol- is a building A pet peeve of mine. Indiana, PA (home of IUP) has a sign on 422 East saying, "Welcome to Indiana, Christmas Tree Capitol of the World" The sign on 422 West has it spelled correctly Sad times when the home of a major state university has kept a syntax error on their welcome signs for over 10 years now. And I think it's great.Mass does.Com, why not? I need to laugh more anyway.
I have to agree with this recommendation. While I've never contacted them myself, they have a good reputation (so I've heard) and one of the primary founders is Guy Kawasaki- VERY respected man in the whole computer field (and one time Mac Evangelist, so you know he's a wise fella;). Definitely check into Garage.com.

The best place to get cheap software are those computer shows that come around. Yeap, I'd say at least 50% of that software is illegal, but it's functional for the 'poor college student'.
The information and support is out there, as you mention, but getting full-fledged, LEGAL software is NOT an easy task- at least, in my experience (course, now I work for a multimedia company, so I have- I mean, I work with- most all software I need
Fire! Crouch! Fire! Jump! Fire!" ;)
Reproduction. Fire doesn't reproduce. It can grow and expand, but it doesn't reproduce. Thus, not 'alive'. ;)
Sound good? Does to me!
I haven't seen this addressed yet, though it may be by AC's or posted by the time this is...
;).
As many others mention, forcing MS to document ALL their API's and distribute them freely would be a good way to allow others to offer truly competitive products (I'd LOVE to use Netscape as my overall interface instead of IE- why can't I?
And I think it's great .Mass does .Com, why not? I need to laugh more anyway.
I have to agree with this recommendation. While I've never contacted them myself, they have a good reputation (so I've heard) and one of the primary founders is Guy Kawasaki- VERY respected man in the whole computer field (and one time Mac Evangelist, so you know he's a wise fella ;).
Definitely check into Garage.com.
