  2. foolish or evil? on Taxing Free Software · · Score: 1

I keep reading that the Polish government is stupid... I don't think this is about stupidity. I really think that the government doesn't want to lose money on this. I don't know how much of the tax money comes from software, but I guess it must be a big sum if they have to do this.

Think about it: if you receive $$$ for every purchase of Micro$oft warez, and everyone starts buying free software, you gotta get that money from somewhere else.

Let's hope Red Hat, SuSE or some other cool Linux company comes out with a clever plot to avoid this.

The moral of this: not stupid, at all; most of the time, they are cunningly evil.

  3. MP3 in Argentina on MP3s In Foreign Countries · · Score: 1

Here in Argentina everybody is trading MP3 at work, and you can buy almost anywhere CDs with all the MP3 of any given music band.
Most rock bands from here are posting their latest jobs on their web pages.

  4. Perhaps only your vote counts... on Should You Vote? · · Score: 1

As a latin american, I've always complained about how the US have become the police of the world, and how they dictate the economical policies that all countries must follow. In Argentina, sometimes it's a moot point who wins an election, because they will have to listen to Washington even to make the annual budget.

So you're not only holding the power to change your country, but, sadly, you are in a position to sway the world.

Vote. Don't vote Bush; he means CIA, he means daddy Bush, and by association he means everything conspirative and fascist.

Vote. Maybe vote Gore. He's not OK, but I don't know if there are other candidates.

Vote. Vote someone. Don't stay home.

  5. Which is a good bookstore, then? on The End Of The Amazon Era · · Score: 1

I am from Argentina, South America, and I shop at Amazon.com and at Steve Jackson Games (for my GURPS books). Both stores give an excellent service, get the books down here on a reasonable time and at a reasonable fee. I was just checking Fatbrain and they are charging way too expensive shipping fees for South America.
Besides, Amazon has always treated me well. Last month I made an order and had to pay an extra $75 to DHL Argentina. As I didn't expected it, I complained to Amazon and I received a *refund*!

It also happened some other times that a book was missing or something like that, and Amazon has always corrected the situation.

Is there any other bookstore online that is "politically correct" and as efficient as Amazon?

I would also like to read a Jon Katz reply to all this comments... I think Amazon is a *business*... you can't expect anything else from 'em...

  7. Like the good ol' scientists on Feature: On Being Proprietary · · Score: 2

What this guy is pointing out is the need to share your work in order to make it better. What's happening here is sort of what happens in the scientific community. Science people are expected to release papers when some experiment makes a breakthrough, so other scientists can replicate the experience. But when there's money involved, nobody shares anything.
Computing and programming is a science like anything else. And if we want to *really* make breakthroughs (AIs, sentient software, etc.) we should start to behave more like a community and not like a bunch of capitalists.
