It started out innocently enough, getting my email using a 14.4 modem. Then, it was reading/. and UF over a 28.8 internal. Before I knew it I was downlaoding mp3s and seti work units over a T1. Sorry, I have to go get a new kernel now.
The whole concept of shutting your computer down is obsolete. First of all, the heating/cooling cycles will shorten the life of your hardware. Secondly, the computing and networking industries are moving to a world of persistent network connections via cable modem, xDSL, etc. Users want acces to their information now. Also, there is a strong movement towards home networking. It would be a shame to not be able to participate in the future of computing because your OS can't be depended upon to stay up and running.
... I had to laugh at all the Pro-MS posts tonight. The chapters from Turing's Enigma Treatise are hosted on a Linux box at CERN and Adobe's web server is running on Solaris.
"The traditional supercomputer market is not really going anywhere anyway, with the trend clearly more towards commodity architecture clusters typified by Beowulf." These are two completely different architectures, designed for solving very different problems. Why do people think that they are always interchangeable.
"but until either one can be proven, I think both should be kept out of our schools. It's simply not science." I disagree. The process of attempting to prove a theory false is what science is all about.
My God is way more subtle and powerful than they can imagine. He created the Universe in a way that permitted stars to form and molecules to eventually self-organize. He don't need no stinkin' props! He created a Universe that doesn't require much maintenance, but if you need a bugfix, and you ask him nicely, he usually comes up with a solution.
"Unfortunately, communicating the complete vision at this time would jeopardize our competitive advantage and business success, especially if we released this information on our web site. I hope you can understand how important it is for us to keep certain strategic information from our competitors."
Does this mean no source code ?

What are you talking about ? Slashdot is red, white and blue on a black background. Slash also has FAR more usability than most web-sites.

I have a herd of oxes to transport my boxes. Seriously, boxes are those cardboard things they use to ship boxen.
256k was about right, for a mainframe. I remember a System 360 with 256k.
Why, because mattc speaks the truth ? Face it, Win98 is a toy.

Thank You. That needed to be said.

We have Freedom of Religion. What we need is Freedom FROM Religion.
Wow, It worked! The only problem is that it wants libqt. :-(
Yeah, who wants to live in a place where the government doesn't even have enough control to tell you what to think.

"Theory is theory until proven, and shouldn't be
represented as anything else until then."
A theory cannot be proven to be true. Theories can only be proven to be NOT true, like creationism.

Aren't they the ones selling the "unstoppable" Windows NT ? I always laugh when I see that commercial.
a RIDE home in the Harrier.
Stevens is the man. If I could only read one programming book, APUE would be the one.
I read somewhere that the last burn was too hot/long. The thing probably hit the wall. If there was water, Prospector flew over it.
