While your is spelled correctly, the correct word to use is you're.

  2. File cannot be found on Mac OS X 10.2 Technote Released · · Score: 1
At about 11:42 PDT, while poking around in the Tech Note, I suddenly started getting an error from Mozilla:

"The file /technotes/tn2002/tn2053.html" cannot be found. Please check the location and try again.

I went to the Apple developer site and searched around, but I was unable to find tn2053 (I did run across tn2052, so I might have been close).

Is it just me, or did something suddenly change?

  4. Re:I live in Portland on MS Pressuring NW Schools: Pay Up, Or Face Audit · · Score: 1

I live in Portland, too, and have extensive experience in one elementary school (the one my son attented). They have at least 90% Macintoshs with no Microsoft software except the IE that comes with recent Macs. But they have around 100 computers, which means about 10 PCs. They have no dedicated staff to support any of the computers.

Do you carefully file all the paperwork for every copy of software on your one or two or three computers? How about 100? How about 50 elementary schools, 10 or 15 middle schools and high schools? (I made up the numbers of schools - probably correct within a factor of 2). I wouldn't be too surprised if the high school (and perhaps middle school kids) had some unlicensed S/W, but 1st graders do not!

Auditing the schools themselves (if MS intendes to do that) is pure harrassment (and I am a Microsoft shareholder). Of course, Microsoft probably sees the predominance of the Mac OS as an additional reason to torment them. OTOH, if they focused on the administrative offices, the picture might be different.

  5. Consider the source of the news on Linux Counter Drops 90.000 Users · · Score: 1

Americans who venture outside their native land are often confused by the European convention for decimals and separation of thousands, which are exactly the reverse of those in the United States,
making 90.000 in fact ninety thousand. I suspect that this was not a typo, simply a lack of conversion to the American "standard".

  6. Re:10 Days on Cross Country Solar Race · · Score: 2
The 1999 race started in Washington, D.C. in the pouring rain. The cars didn't see sustained sunshine until South Carolina or Georgia on their way to Orlando, Florida. Many of the cars were transported many miles with penalty minutes added to their final time (shortest time wins). At least one car was transported across the Appalachian moutains to charge for the day, then back to the next stop (all the cars had to reach a common destination every day in that race).

For this race, the media access stops are mandatory, but several days separate them. If a car is unable to get there in the time allotted, it will have to be transported.

One amusing aspect to these races is the amount of fossil fuel (gasoline) that is expended. Each solar car is required to have a lead car and a chase car with flashing warning lights (the cars can go fast, but often go slow, especially when the sun isn't out), and most teams have a car or truck towing a trailer with car parts and luggage, as well as a scout car ahead checking out the weather and the traffic. The University of Michigan team (my son and his grandfather are tagging along and cheerleading for this team) has a tractor-trailer rig complete with a machine shop.

Obviously, I know the most about the U of M team, so I'll continue (I actually went to Stanford, and they have a team as well). The U of M car was pre-running the race in Oklahoma two or three weeks ago, hit a pothole, and totaled the car body. They proceeded to build a new one (carbon fiber, resin, etc.) and passed the qualifying test yesterday (I think) with the new car.

If you haven't guessed, fund raising is one of the skills developed by members of these teams.

Also found the "old work" electrical boxes to be handy. They fit in from the front and then have two screws that are tightened to clamp it in place.

Even easier in drywall is the EZ Plate mounting bracket sometimes sold with telephone accessories. These things are just an open frame you bend into place in a hole cut in the drywall. It has a hole at the top and bottom for the coverplate. Since Cat 5 is low voltage, no need for a real electrical box at all!

  8. Re:MacOS/X is from BSD4.4, not Mach on Linus vs Mach (and OSX) Microkernel · · Score: 1
MacOS X is a BSD server "on top of" a Mach kernel in a design or system abstraction sense, but the actual implementation runs both in a common address space and protection level. When the file system calls a device driver, it's simply a subroutine call, not a protection boundary crossing. This is in fact very similar to what Microsoft ended up doing when they moved GDI code into the kernel to improve performance.
