I've been doing software for over 25 years now. There have always been corners that I would dread working in (COBOL 25 years ago, Windows today), but there have always been more niches that I could get excited about than I ever had time to work in.
That isn't to say that I haven't occasionally been cornered into working on some boring projects or dated technology in order to collect a (better than average) paycheck, but I have generally found my way into working with some cool new bleeding edge stuff sooner or later. My wife is on her second or third career (depending on how you count); I've enjoyed several within the field of CS.
Mitch was not involved in operational decisions when Lotus 1-2-3 initially took the OS/2 path instead of Windoze.
Although Lotus management can't avoid the bulk of the blame, Microsoft did have a hand in encouraging ISVs like Lotus to embrace OS/2; in fact, once upon a time OS/2 was referred to in Microsoft/IBM technical briefings as DOS 5.
Replay already includes a service (MyReplayTV.com) which enables you to view and/or search the channel guide on the Web and program the unit to record/delete/etc. shows. (The unit dials in to the server once a night to refresh the guide and collect the Web-entered commands, so you need to act at least a day in advance.)
...that I haven't seen mentioned here that I studied in college: Algol and RPG.
Algol (Algorithmic Language) was a structured language (compared to, say, COBOL and FORTRAN) that was probably ahead of its time.
RPG was a report generation language taught alongside COBOL, although not really related to it.

Re: You cannot let the smoke out of the CPU, because it [is] the magic that makes it run....
Half the magic; you forgot the mirrors.
