Do you know what is a laughable sum? $0.00.

*sigh* And just today I was looking at my college's career site and noticed several internships with no pay. I guess that's good experience when you are in school, but these are summert 40hr/week internships.

  2. Sounds familiar.. on Microsoft Pirating Their Own Software? · · Score: 1

This sounds exactly like what happened to me at my University (UT Austin). I went to our Campus Computer store and bought the latest version of Office. I noticed that they made me sign an agreement that essentially said that I needed a separate license from MS once I graduate, and that I could get it from the place I bought the CDs. So, I asked the guys working at the store about getting this license, and after 10 minutes of talking and looking at stuff they just told me that I didn't actually need one. So, go figure. I have a signed agreement sayign that I need a license key and that Campus Computers would provide, and they said they didn't have to. I guess I am legit.

The only problem with just making a small addition and then claiming a new patent is that your addition has to be NON-OBVIOUS. And it's already established that something done offline, but moved online, is obvious and is not grounds for a patent.

They already made a phone that played MP3's according to this article (linked to in a previous comment). And that phone failed.

It doesn't say if it was 128MB or not, but the idea isn't completely ignored... although it might be for a while now after one failure.

I've never even heard of a mousepad that might be required for an optical mouse.

I've used my optical mouse on 2 different plain old desktop surfaces (one wasa bit glossy, and sometimes the mouse pointer would jerk on-screen) and on several different plain old mousepads, with no trouble.

I figure being older is better, since its glossiness that creates trouble.

  8. Re:No downloads? Get over it! on Xandros 1.0 · · Score: 1

You say that we can't feel like we need a trial version of Xandros because MacOS X doesn't have a trial version?

The difference between the two is that I can go to any local computer store and play with a laptop running MacOS X, or try OS X on a friend's computer who's been using it for quite some time. Xandros has neither of those 2 benefits (they don't have lots of established users, and they don't have computers running it in many computer stores).

MacOS X was a sucessor of a previous OS version, and thus was "familiar" to many Mac users. Xandros.... nothing.

So, the question is "how do you start an OS off from scratch?" I'd say the same way I got hooked on linux - give it away for free (even if its just a time-limited version).

Don't bring more than 4 AA's on an airplane trip. I did that on a trip recently and one of the security personell mentioned that looked supsicious and recommended I carry no more than 4.

Eh? I just flew roundtrip across the country with 30 or so AA's in my carry-on and had no trouble at all in the airport.
