That when the site linked to is REALLY down there are no mirrors yet? While in every case when the original data is available there are tons and tons of mirrors around. Makes me wonder if anyone here actually goes to read the stories.

Would appreciate anyone putting up a mirror or at least the text.

This is news because they put 80Gbps on a SINGLE wavelength. So your system would carry not 10*8 Gbps, but 80*8 Gbps. Now you gotta admit this is news :-)

  20. Re:Does orthagonality ... on Scientists Double Optical Fiber Transmission Capacity · · Score: 0
I am currently doing my Master's thesis in Optical Network at UTD, so I guess I can comment on this.

The fiber on which the light travels cannot be made perfectly circular, this causes one mode of the light to travel faster than the other.

Normally this polarization mode dispersion (PMD) affects only the highest capacity channels say > 10Gbps. This is because at lower speeds other effects are predominant, and we can get to 40Gbps only by killing all the other effects.

The reason that we do not use only one mode of polarizad light to transmit the information is that the polarization direction changes randomly with time. Since the property of the fiber changes with stress, it has been reported that even a train running nearby (for fiber laid along railroad) is sufficient to change the polarization.

What I am curious is about the /controlling mean/. Since the polarization is going to be changing all the time, I guess they use a sort of pilot wave to sync the directions. From the translation, thats all Id hazard to guess.

As for AM Vs FM. most if not all fibers use AM. This is because the noise level is extremely low in the fiber, and also the noise mechanism itself i very different from plain radio transmission where the noise in AM is much more than noise in FM.
Also the lasers in use now, do not allow for a wide range of frequecy outputs to be controlled easily. Switching them on and off is much easier.
FM is used to modulate several radio frequecy channels over a light beam, this is called sub-carrier multiplexing.
