Why do I get the feeling similar quotes were heard just before the Roman Empire fell?
Most likely it was something like, 'The lead in our drinking cups don't have any harmful side effects that we can see.'
If you have a UPS with a power use meter and you launch something that is very processor intensive, you'll actually see the power use go up on the UPS.
That power isn't free, it might only be a few cents now, but it does add up over time.
I liked the Javascript, but I didn't think much for his perl script though:

Yes, I xxx'd out my router address. I'm not that crazy, yet.
Actually, I keep the connection open to the user and then force a refresh after a new message or x seconds have elapsed. (Javascript push/pull) Netscape used to support a pure 'server push' but nothing else did, so I had to resort to this push-pull.
Well heck, why did I hook it up to my top of the line 1972 Radio Shack 8 Track quad music system then?
I'm saying I bought a nice sound system, it happens to be 7.1 surround. I use WMA 9 lossless because the price was right and it sounds good compared to what I had before.
I used to use Winamp all the time, so when 5.0 was released, I jumped and downloaded it.
Only to find out it doesn't seem to play WMA lossless.
I have 60GB of free space and a pretty darn good 7.1 speaker system on this computer. I don't need to compress the music I listen to into a lossy format, so I went with WMA lossless when I re-encoded my collection.
So, unless I've found a bug, Winamp 5 is out for now. (But it does stay installed, just in case)
Administrator account, password prompted during setup, Local account, no password prompted during setup, but full admin access except for inbound connections.
And if your system was rooted that fast, you didn't follow the recommendations
XP Home sets up the administrator account with a password and a local account with administrator rights without a password AND without inbound network access. (Important part there)
I know, I was just being sarcastic. I'm kinda annoyed at the IE team for the lack of service packs.
Actually, there was a bug that let plugins get installed without checking the security settings. If I remember correctly it was something to do with the automatic install of Browser Helper Objects, combined with an overflow in the IMG tag handler.
I've switched between Firebird and IE for months now. Once NTLM 2 support gets into Firebird, I'll be a lot happier, so I can connect to work without switching browsers.
But to be honest, I'm really disapointed with the lack of spyware for Firebird. I don't think it will ever be the better browser until I can get some software automaticallly installed just by visiting a site. I don't want to have to click buttons all the time, like Yes or Open.
That and the whole pop-up thing is annoying. If Firebird is a better browser, it should have MORE popups. More is better.
And what's with these constant builds?! SPs should be at least 12-14 months apart. None of this quick fixing stuff. In fact, Service Packs should be 12 - 14 years apart, just in case something gets broken somewhere.

Seriously tho, Microsoft doesn't have that much of a stronghold on the mail (or DNS) server market to stop, slow down, or take over anything like this. It's all server based, and last time I checked, we live in a mixed market Internet.
Developers, Developers, Developers, Developers... (That's all I hear these days, thank you Steve Ballmer)
As a sysadmin, the Devs need to learn how to play nice and keep the system stable. As a developer, I want total access to everything.
Solution? Developer network off the main network. If they blow it up, it's their fault and they fix it. Sounds good in theory. I think programs like Ghost will play a big role in this type of setup.
I would love to see a revamp of the RIO Volt with DVD capabilities & OGG support. I've had the original Volt for a while now and it's a darn good player. CD, MP3, WMA.
I would like to re-rip my CD's in WMA 9 lossless and save them on a DVD+RW. I would still only get about 10 albums per disc, but it would sound darn good with my new headphones.
EverQuest accounts can only be created by adults. Sony will kick you if you are a kid and don't have your parents permission to be there. EQ is pretty much PG-13. The shirts might be a little skimpy, but there's no nudity, and the violence is pretty low-key.
That's a great idea for us geeks, but too complex for the average Joe.
Tech support would eat up too much time.

Actually, you have a good point.
These programs are not really cost free to run.

Here, lets make a minor change to your statement.

You can either use Word or download the free viewer.
So, please, tell me the difference between the two?

And you can turn around and not pay them.
Or better yet, pay them, then take them to small claims court.
Constantly changing one sided and unsigned contracts that update without your consent would be a pretty good start to a claim.
Wait, CD's are only stereophonic?

Ever hear of slipstreaming? You can take a SP and make a new install CD with it.
Visit a site like bink.nu and look for slipstream (AKA bootCD) info.
And if you do it in New York City, you should get some kind of cash prize.
(There's always traffic in NYC, traffic at 2am on the Cross Island Parkway...WHY?!)
How soon before:
You passed between milepost 1 and 15 in under 6 minutes, here's your speeding ticket.
Um, that's what I said.
Administrator account, password prompted during setup, Local account, no password prompted during setup, but full admin access except for inbound connections.
And if your system was rooted that fast, you didn't follow the recommendations
Step 1: Firewall ON
Step 2: Windows update
Also, in the home version your local account does not have a password, and accounts without passwords are denied inbound network access.
So, it's not really a fully enabled admin until you assign a password. (It's a small point, but important none the less)

XP Home sets up the administrator account with a password and a local account with administrator rights without a password AND without inbound network access. (Important part there)
Not one comment or bad joke about the 'Lords of Cobol'?
And you call yourselves a news for nerds site!

I really can't believe I forgot that, and I took this class on government in High School back in 1984... oh, wait, that's why I forgot it.
Thanks.
I wonder if this would fall under interstate commerce?
It's right after the Interstate highway system, you must have overlooked it.
