Only because of all the voter fraud in the City of Saint Louis did that happen. It was so bad that U.S. Marshalls got called in to oversee the mayoral election, which Francis Slay won easily. The rest of the state almost certainly would have elected Ashcroft, and the vote was close enough that without the fraud, Ashcroft would have won. Furthermore, there was a sympathy vote and it was already known at the time that his widow would be appointed by Governor Holden to the Senate. Not to mention that polls in the City of Saint Louis were held open late by approval of a judge, a decision which was overturned later in the night, but not before the polls were held open for a time. So I'm not sure Ashcroft didn't really win Missouri, and the Senate has the power to choose its membership in some cases and could have sent Carnahan's widow home, as would Ashcroft have the opportunity to request recounts, which he declined. So get the facts before you go making ignorant comments. Thanks.

Ask yourself if the people really support Microsoft being broken up. There are those who feel that Microsoft really is innovating and ask what happened to free enterprise. And there are also those who believe Microsoft did break the law but breaking them up is too extreme. Those who really want Microsoft broken up are in the minority. This is a democracy and a solution that is more moderate and closer to the opinion of the public is being pursued. I'm glad democracy came through instead of a quick fix like breaking up the company by a few with a somewhat more extreme view.

  22. Re:Because Nader took votes from Gore... on Why The U.S. Surrendered To Microsoft · · Score: -1

Remember, Microsoft still will be punished for illegal activities, just other solutions are being pursued. I've always thought breaking up Microsoft when other solutions were available was rather extreme.

As far as Microsoft being on the verge of being punished, they would be stalling it in courts and we'd still be quite far from any settlement or decision. As it is, this may well speed up the punishment of Microsoft and hopefully a more positive solution that actually does something to remedy the illegal practices is in the works. Breaking Microsoft up was the easy way out and hopefully this administration will come up with something better.

  23. Re:Hollywood surrenders to MS on Why The U.S. Surrendered To Microsoft · · Score: -1

Remember, a lot of people don't think Microsoft should be broken up. And the longer it stalls in court, the longer Microsoft can continue unfair business practices. The case against Microsoft is not being dropped, and by speeding the case up, less damage can be done. But this pretty much accuses the government of being bribed into not breaking up Microsoft and that's an asinine accusation to make. Just because you don't agree with something doesn't mean that those who do agree are acting with bad intentions, or are acting that way because they have been bribed. This article has no business being on Slashdot and is just more anti-Microsoft zealotry.
