  1. OK ,look at it this way on Travesty: Dmitry Sklyarov's Arrest · · Score: 2

Lets try a less blown out of porportion analogy, Dmitri's software wasn't gonna kill anyone.

Ford sells cars under an agreement that you can't look under the hood and the make a "special" hood locking mechanism to prevent you from unlocking it. Russia doesn't care about Ford's IP rights cause they need to fix cars for little cash. In not too much time a clever Russian discovers that a modified screwdriver (rot-13) unlocks the hood. He brings these screw drivers to the US and sells a couple, even a few to the FBI, while telling everyone that's is just a stupid modified screwdirver. Ford gets pissy and has them arrested.

Still sound like a good law?

both of you cought my use of "accurate". Hold accurate to mean "close to the underlying truth" and you might get my gist. Look at it this way Newtonian Physics was more accurate than Ptolemaic Astronomy. Einsteinian Physics is more accurate than Newtonain, and so on. Physics changes there are tons of _theories_ and fewer _laws_ that we no longer regard as the "truth" that once were seen as the only logical way things could possibly be at the time. You're saying we're close to the end, that pure natural truth is just around the corner, I suggesting that maybe the ride has just begun and we have a long way to go. Who knows, maybe tommorrow some one will discover something that changes everything again. It's happened more than once before.

Maybe this gave you an insight into my thoughts on the matter.

Let me also disagree with sharkticon. I believe that physics is a collection of explanations for the phenomenons we experience. Sure there are forces and relationships that cause the universe to be as it is today and that is the subject matter of physics. Put simply (physics != truth)

If you still disagree that's ok I can agree to disagree, not much to do now as we have enter the belief zone, which is generally where the infinite regress ends. PS sharkticon, bollocks is a word, not a phrase =)

    good debate!

  6. Re:Moore's Law vs Physics on The Ultimate Limits Of Computers · · Score: 1

You are correct to a certian extent, technology and knowledge are man made, nature is not. Physics, however, is man made. In your own counter argument you said Moore's observation applies to technology and knowledge, two inherent ingredients to physics. As our technology and knowledge grows so does our ability to penetrate to the "underlying truths of nature". Hence why we no longer believe newtonian physics to be accurate. I'm just pointing out that it _MAY_ be the case that Moore's law will constrain physics, instead of physics constaining Moore's law. (something the author doesn't even consider)

Technology does have the ability to alter how we interpret observations about nature. =)

  7. Moore's Law vs Physics on The Ultimate Limits Of Computers · · Score: 1

I have a big problem with the first two paragraphs. In the first paragraph Geon states:

"It pays to keep in mind, however, that this isn't really a law, but only an observation, and does not reflect any underlying natural truths. "

In the second paraghraph he states:

"What we know is that any future technologies must obey and be constrained by the laws of physics."

I'd just like to say that I don't know that tomorrow's computing will be constrained by today's physics. This guy attacks Moore's law as being merely an observation, well what the hell is physics? It's a bunch of theories that try to explain observations! If no one ever observed anything, then there wouldn't be any physics. The moore (pardon the pun) observations we make, ideally, the closer to "the underlying truth" we get. Who knows maybe Moore's law points to an underlying truth in the drive of humankind that will actually constrain physics and change forever the way we progress and develope as a society. I'm not trying to troll here, I just didn't like the way he trash talked one observation while relying on the "inherent truths" of another. Who made him god?
