Once you start getting into modifications and making sure that you are maintaining your car perfectly, it's nice to keep track of all of this information. I started a really simple site http://thecartracker.com/ where you can enter this information and look at other user information.
Yea, I forgot to mention that. Rsync works very well with SSH. You can generate a key on the backup server, upload the public portion to the server that you want to backup, and the rsync occurs over an ssh session. Quite effective. If you are interested, I could post some scripts. Just let me know.
We have just created a new policy of backing up to a remote location using rsync and cp -al. Basically we do an rsync then daily copies on the backup machine using hard links. There is a very good introduction here.
We're doing this in an enterprise environment, but it would be easy to co-ordinate between two friends as well.
You might want to check out some Alvarion gear (http://alvarion.com or http://alvarion-usa.com). They have some nice high powered indoor units (SU-R7). Depending on walls, etc, you may be able to get by with those. They're at least worth checking out. It is not WiFi (which is both good and bad). It is FHSS.
Does anyone know if someone is producing 802.11b IP phones? We have several companies running small 3COM setups with hardwired phones and would like to add some wireless phones into the mix.
What we have been spending some time on is using fixed point to setup hotspots in an effort to reduce the line of sight problem. Doing smaller hotspots or micro pops, can get the coverage you need, especially when mixing 900Mhz with 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz.
We are a WISP (wireless ISP) outside of Philadelphia. While our area does not lend itself to 20 mile shots, we have been doing shorter range service. Our service is just starting up and more information is available at gambitwireless.com. I know of other WISPs doing the 20 mile shots with amps and within FCC regs.

You need someone with a Penn card (ID card). So students, faculty, and staff work.
Might want to check out the Universities in your area. For example:

This is one of the nicest installs I have seen in a 300zx.

He even has it integrated into the car computer and last I heard he's working on making modifications to the chip (ECU) while the vehicle is driving.
