they become monopolies or oligopolies, and warp the marketplace so only they benefit

the greatest enemy of the free marketplace, true capitalism, is not socialism or communism, but monopolies and oligopolies. people need to understand the difference between capitalism and corporatism

capitalism is the engine of growth of any economy, and the country that is able to keep the marketplaces as close to free as possible is the country that prospers. corporatism meanwhile is all about the larger players in the marketplace paying off the government, abusing natural defects in the marketplace, and otherwise ossifying and abusing their size to squash innovation and consumers to maximize profit. what's most important is to realize that the only tool you have against capitalism devolving into corporatism is a government with strong regulatory powers. the players in the mark place won't self-regulate, ever... well, they WILL self-regulate, if by that you mean the degenrate meaning of merely consolidating their power at the expense of the free market

the "shocking" realization for the libertarian free market fundamentalist is that the friend of the true capitalist is a strong central government with lots of regulations. it seems contradictory to the common rhetoric, but its absolutely true. perhaps the common rhetoric has been bought and paid for by corporatists. perhaps those who fight government, whether out of being propagandized or being naive, are actually working for the oligopolies whose true desire is to crush the individual and the marketplace (for then they profit more)

if you are a true libertarian, your greatest enemy are oligopolies, not communists

we need a sea change on the right in terms of seeing that large corporations are not their friends, and represent a greater threat to their beliefs and their country than any bleeding heart liberal could ever be

its a simple and effective form of social filtration

why do some people cover themselves in tattoos? for some people, dealing with someone covered in tattoos is like a ringing inside their head: they simply can't deal with it. for other people, if you're covered in tattoos, so what? i deal with you as well and as easily and as honestly as someone wearing a suit. so the tattoo covered person has a convenient social filter against the mediocre in their society

the mediocre mind trusts suits, but doesn't trust tattooed people. and plenty of snake oil salesman, demagogues, and charlatans throughout history have presented themselves as perfect specimens of respectability, manipulating the simple social cues, all the while lying their asses off, and yet mediocre minds listen, because they trust to the social convention, rather than the actual words

and structurally, security wise, the problem is the same as terrorism: the good guys have to be vigilant all the time, they can't fail ever. while the bad guys: they can screw up time and again, that's ok. they learn even. they only need to get in once. so even if you are google, no, ESPECIALLY if you are google because you're such a fabled target, you are at a strategic disadvantage, even with all your resources, to be hacked. those who want to hack you are ready to invest heavily into hacking you: its a good investment, because the payoff is gargantuan, the economics of the security situation works against google

this same calculus governs the automobile industry: why spend bazillions on safety devices when the half dozen lawsuits from deaths every year from not using the safety component is cheaper?

the point is: you need government regulation. you need strong government regulation because companies can NOT be relied upon to police themselves. that feedback from the market is NOT a valid safety mechanism. the free market fairy can in fact very often decide AGAINST saving human life. we need a strong regulatory government agency (as opposed to the clinton-bush era "dismantle all regulations in finance industry" bullshit philosophy) to simply say: "sorry, there is something more important than the bottom line, and that's the lives of our citizens, so you will not fly in the ash cloud, and you will build expensive safeguards in your automobiles. at your expense conglomerates. shut up and deal with it"

and guess what: you will pay taxes for these regulations and their enforcement, and you will not whine about bureaucracy and red tape, and you will not balk at the cost of these regulations. you will happy these government functions are there to save your life (regardless of the downgraded value of your life according to your own free market worship ideology)
