As sweet and righteous as that would be if half of Americans are too stupid to vote in their best interests I'm afraid the electors won't be either - at least not in enough numbers. However... I DO think even a handful doing it would be an incredibly powerful message considering how historic it would be.
How the hell does a drone that at most would be maybe 4 feet across replicate fireworks that make explosions as much as 50 to 100 feet across (or more)?
Needs a LOT more detail to make sense.
But. I completely agree that UBI can foster more jobs although "jobs" is probably a loose description of what will come which is mainly careers and professions. When it's not specifically to earn money for subsistence I don't think of it as a job.
Also sorry if the first comment came out snarky.
Where are you getting your information? Because it sure isn't from Kauffman Index (which it should be if anyone is going to talk about entrepreneurs)
As of last year (2015) entrepreneurs launched their own businesses in what is the largest year-over-year increase in the past 20 years.
Period.
Everything I've read indicates it would be the same for the U.S.
I agree with most of what you said. I've followed the history of technology from the start of the first industrial revolution and the luddites are a pretty smart group to study in order to understand the ebb and flow of technology explosions and the ones who oppose it as the end of jobs. What I find really interesting is how some people view the end of jobs as a disaster, most others view it as the best possible end goal.
The thing is, when you look at exactly what this revolution is based on you find out this actually IS different than prior ones. AI and robotics are already replacing jobs around the world and in those vacuums there are NO new jobs being created.
You can look back at the previous three technology revolutions starting with the industrial one and track new job growth almost immediately. Every time. But not this one. By every metric we have this tech revolution is doing things to the job market that we've never seen. Most experts I've read - and these are people that are the opposite of luddites - put a global job loss of 60% by 2040. That's only 24 years from now.
We have to start preparing for it now or the disruption is going to cause a lot of misery before it's overall good will be realized.
You're also absolutely right that there will always be jobs for people. Just not nearly as many as before.
I kind of look at like Star Trek: people had careers and hobbies and expertise but never really jobs. None of them worked for money of any sort - it was all about what you wanted to study, what were your interests, what would you like to do to help or benefit everyone. So you wouldn't really consider the things they did "jobs".
Barring a meteor, pandemic, nuclear war or super-volcano there WILL be an end to most jobs and we WILL need something like a UBI. Barring the things I mentioned or anything else that wipes out humanity this IS the path we're on. It's not a matter of if this is coming but when.
Yeah, she blamed them because EVERY security firm and agency has verified - and shown publicly how they verified - that it WAS Russian hackers. And since you seem to be behind on fact based news: the reason most of the press is leaving this alone is that ALL the networks have determined the files are full of forgeries and fakes and none of it can be trusted.
But hey, maybe you have an agenda causing you to imply with your headline that she was being deceitful. Because that is what you did.
Pretty much every comment here on Trumps side has used racist slurs, homophobe insults, insults denigrating women - essentially all the things people hate about Trump and his supporters and they're so staggeringly stupid they come on here and prove what everyone thinks about them is true.
Do you even comprehend how immature and uneducated you sound?
Oh well, it doesn't much matter. In just 45 days none of us will ever have to listen to you or Trump again.
I don't have an Oculus but I do have a Gear VR. The chain back to Luckey is a little more complicated but it's still Oculus. I've cancelled all services and got refunds where I was able. Our whole house is trading in our Galaxy's for different phones only because Samsung supports the platform which is too bad. But none of us hesitated and it wasn't a hard choice.
We believe in freedom of speech too but as everyone knows that has limits - there's the famous example that you still can't yell "fire" in a theater.
That's what this is. I've voted against Republicans running for president and against two Democrats. I would not have taken this action against any of those I voted against before. Trump is different.
A child with an internet connection that doesn't already have their mind made up can spend less than five minutes online and find verifiable evidence of the enormous number of outright lies this man has told.
Of the hundreds of positions on serious issues that he's changed his mind on that same day.
The number of times he's actually been found guilty of things in legal courts and paid penalties and fines and how many times he's had to settle.
The childish names he calls people, the tweets where he insults peoples looks. All of these things and more can be PROVEN with video, audio, transcripts and legal documents. No other person that's ever run for president has had so many disqualifying things that could be easily proven.
More Republican judges, generals, cabinet members, law enforcement leaders, senators and congressmen have publicly come out against their own party's nominee in our history.
This is justified at every level.
It's a little strange watching all these "smart" people come on here thinking they can just figure the whole thing out then go back to whatever they were doing before stumbling on this story.
Every single post here whether arguing against the drive or trying to explain it has already been addressed over the past ten to twelve years with the last six publicly accessible online on the dedicated NASA forums. A place where hundreds of individuals and teams from around the world that have built their own devices can discuss and share results and resources. They've been built in garages, labs with university teams and in the offices of major companies r&d departments.
The people doing this range from particle physicists to aeronautical engineers, propulsion researchers and high school teachers.
They've done this in damn near every country on earth and the one thing they all have in common is that they work. All of them.
Yes, there have been design flaws, material failures and human error but the concept - like it or not - works.
All these arguments you're making have been worked through and eliminated one by one over those long years.
The only reason you're reading about it now is that all that hard work is now being detailed in a peer reviewed journal. That will enable the drive to finally go to space where it's proof of concept phase can be complete.
Meanwhile those that are more comfortable with the status-quo will continue to stand on the sidelines insisting that things they don't understand are impossible and that anyone pursuing such things are fools. They'll throw out the occasional argument - that's already been disproven - and laugh at just how smart they were once the whole thing fails.
Watching the solar system open up for human exploration with this new technology will be worth all of it though.
Yeah, this argument (among many others) has been playing out already for close to ten years on the dedicated NASA forum that hundreds of builders and testers around the world have been using to share designs, results, arguments and tweaks.
The idea that microscopic - or macroscopic - particles are being burned or evaporated or in some way changed in order to explain thrust has been tested by several teams and individuals. So far this has been proven to be false. There is no significant degradation or loss of material from the inside of the device.
Good Lord, I use mine all the time, if using a card with a chip confuses you (the screen gives you painfully simple instructions) then society needs to step in and make sure you don't breed. And "much" longer wait? No. At most it takes an extra 5 seconds - at most. Besides those things it's cut down on the number of people forgetting their cards in atm's to almost zero. It's hardly the industry's fault if people are too dumb to use it.
Since 1990, of Kurzweils major 147 predictions 115 have been accurate. Ignoring that because you just don't like the guy or are against anything popular in the mainstream like some tech-hipster makes you and those with that attitude the trolls.
Please enlighten all of us with the names of any futurists who have come close to that kind of accuracy. He's mainly known as a futurist but is also the principal inventor of the first charge-coupled device flatbed scanner. He invented the first omni-font OCR (optical character recognition). He's also the guy that made the first print-to-speech reading machine for the blind and the first commercial text-to-speech synthesizer.
He's been inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame from the U.S. Patent Office.
In 1999 he received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation which is the U.S.'s highest honor in technology. He received the $500,000 Lemelson-MIT Prize in 2001 which is largest in the world for innovation.
I don't know very many trolls that are as talented or accomplished.
Why wouldn't I? Some irrational fear of science? Billions of people eat completely artificial foods of various shapes, ingredients and consistently every day.
Yes, as long as it tasted good of course I'd eat it. And if it helps us save resources and reduce the amount of methane being produced it's a win win.
The level of mindless fear, ignorant suggestions and blind stupidity exhibited in the comments here are enough to convince anyone we'd be better off if the machines did take over. You imbeciles deserve it.
You're an idiot. There are no financial analysts that have said that. Watson is being used as a cloud service in oncology, finances and legal research to name a few. As a platform it's already worth billions. You have no clue what you're talking about.
You have no clue. The entire procedure is open records. The whole process is documented. NO ONE helped Watson once the game started. The entire team that created and set up Watson were in the audience. Watson had the ability to buzz in on its own - no help. This is a matter of public record. There is zero evidence that anything remotely shady was done for Watson to win. Educate yourself.
Not surprisingly, this article - which is only about a candidate for president possibly releasing information Americans have wanted for decades - brings out the ugliest side of people. But only because of who it is.
Years of being told that Hillary lies by overwhelmingly old, white guys that have "traditional" ideas about women's roles in society, pays off in the comments we see here.
By the way, I AM an old, white guy - in Texas no less.
I can post a hundred links to serious, national security lies told by the past three presidents so please enlighten the internet as to the lies she's told. We've been hearing about all the illegal things she's done for almost thirty years without one, single conviction of guilt.
Does she have just really good lawyers? Every time?
For decades?
Or maybe people think the media is on her side - in which case I can point to decades of the liberal news media accusing her of more things than the right has.
At some point you'd think people with just a little intelligence would have to consider the horrifying possibility that she hasn't been convicted of any of these "lies" because she's not actually guilty.
But that would go against so many years of real hate that people who can't stand her just won't give it up.
It's strange that someone who's never done anything to them should get so much hate while politicians that have genuinely made their lives worse over and over again not only don't get their hate but keep getting their votes.
The problem is that they're afraid. Afraid to do the work of verifying things before believing them - much less repeating them with no proof.
They don't dare. If they did they might find out that the lies have been coming from their own lips.
It's not like it's hard either. All you have to do is take any of the things she's been accused of and verify if it's true or not with a non-partisan source. There's plenty of those if you free yourself from the echo chamber of right and left websites, blogs and news sources. But it's scary too. You're likely to find out that the sources you've been trusting have been lying to you as much as those you've been taught are your enemies. Enemies! We're all Americans. Or have you people forgotten that? Can't you see that people are manipulating you by convincing you that everything is us vs them.
If anyone bothers to reply here I expect they'll try and turn it around. Say that anyone defending her should prove her innocence.
Well that's not the way America is supposed to work. The one that accuses someone of lying has the responsibility of proving it. You know: "innocent until proven guilty".
If that sounds familiar it's because that's the principle our justice system is based on. That's good enough for me.
As sweet and righteous as that would be if half of Americans are too stupid to vote in their best interests I'm afraid the electors won't be either - at least not in enough numbers. However... I DO think even a handful doing it would be an incredibly powerful message considering how historic it would be.

Actually the same here in the states. That person had a machine that is not typical

Uh yeah, yeah he is. There's this cool new thing called google where you can check such things before making stupid comments.
Exactly. Some people apparently don't have enough depth to understand that. I figure they're just NPC's*. *gamer reference
Your word salad needs some dressing
This was news like a month ago. Seriously. All the late night comics had fun with it and moved on. Did something NEW happen that I'm missing?

Oh good, the terrorists can't get a burner phone - but they can still go to a gunshow and buy a pistol or semi automatic without one.
