If too many people think like you, we will not see IBM invest in Linux, we won't see people switch from AmiPro to WinWord, we won't see AMD taking more market share from Intel...
I don't see why Slashdot rate your article "Insightful"...
Two years ago, a small team came up with an idea, "what is the weak link in a Linux installation? The interface!" "Let's find some famous UI guys and form a company and take over the Linux desktop. As anyone controls the desktop, he will controls the OS..." "Great idea!"
One year ago, the team came up with a better idea. "Geez, with this 15 million OPM, what are we going to do?"
"How about *doing nothing* ?"
"What!?"
"Imagine this, one year later, after we buy a few Porches for ourselves, take a few months of vacation in Thailan, doing nothing... Eazel will go bankrupt, not only we have enjoyed our good time, it also give Linux a bad name!"
"H a h a h a . .."
I wonder who else in this world is still dreaming of free lunch. I always ask myself, why there are so many folks writing 'free' software? To me, there is only a few possibilities:
1. The programmer is the user.
2. The project team are the users.
3. I am hired to do so.
4. I am draming an IPO.
5. I produce sh-t programs.
... maybe a few more (you suggest) but 'information want to be free' is never on the list. It is the human beings (please read any economic text book) who build stuff. If there is free lunch for some perople, there must be someone else paying the bills. Free stuff is so rare and in turn making itself expensive.

To me, OSX is almost the prefect OS. It is BSD, comes with a superb interface, hosts Office suite, supports nVIDIA graphic boards,... and it is not from Microsoft.
Too bad Apple programmers need to feed their families and thus put up a price tag...
Linux desktop has been copying windows for years (the start button, task bar, tab pages...) and still looks ugly. Why the developers find something better to copy from? Say, Mac OS.
Since when Open Source / GNU projects needs funding to have the work to be done? Are such projects done by free(dom) contributors?
I don't understand why people 'want' money to program for such projects...
Please enlighten me.
Let users pay Microsoft, let developers create Linux...
