I agree totally. Since RedHat's announcement, I've been talking with our department about getting away from RedHat, since we assumed that there would be no support whatsoever in in the future for us. Now RedHat decides to come back and offer support for schools, but how long until they decide to stop it again once they realize that it's "not making any money"? I'm sorry, but I'm not going to wait around on some wishy-washy dying company with my Linux deployment, I'll be sticking with Debian if at all possible. At least a group of volunteers won't cut you out because "you're not profitable anymore".
I have 2 Sun 3/80s, 20MHz, 12mb Ram, serving DNS for several domains I host. They're running NetBSD-1.6.1, djbdns, and daemontools. Honestly, there's no need for anything more, they do the job just fine. Take a peek at my MRTG stats if you don't believe me!
Like Norton Anti-Virus? I assume the hundreds of CDs that float around pirated come from China, but I could be wrong. Anyhow, I know of many many local computer OEMs that sell them with systems. They work just the same as regular copies.
Indeed. This is by far the most ludicris (sp?) port I've ever seen on slashdot. Walmart selling computers with no OS for Linux geeks. Get real!
Walmart sells these for, as the other poster said, Joe SixPack to order and get the copy of Windows from his cousin and get his other cousin to load it.
Let me fill you in, I live in Tennessee, I know how this works. I've worked at a shop for almost 5 years now. I hear it all the time, "I don't need Windows, I'll just get it from my brother." Walmart is definately encourageing piracy here.:)
Did it EVER occur to you people that, uhh... just maybe... Walmart has no intentions whatsoever of selling these to you? None! At all! They could care less about any person who reads slashdot! You don't matter! The only computer without an OS from Walmart that's going to be sold to a competent computer user is the one used for this review. Don't applaud Walmart, don't give them a hand, don't go buy something there. This is not, in any way, an advancement in the open-source movement!
Look ma! Another "my MHz is more than MHz" believer!
Try looking at the differences between the MIPS architecture and x86, see if you find anything interesting.
Intel silicon can run a lot of clock cycles per second, but it's what it does with those cycles that counts!

Wow!
It's truly amazing the amount of time that people on here have on their hands. Of course, noone will really ever read all of that, since it's modded down to -1, but still, you put the effort into it, and that sure says something. Wow.
And yes, I am familiar with the American Family, but my goal was not to write an essay. Apparently you did, you submitted the first draft, then went and did some more research, and turned in a second draft. I'm so very proud. Maybe Santa Claus will bring you a new bicycle when you turn 13 this year.
BTW don't you DARE think that you will recieve another response. Like I said, I have a life, I don't read stuff that's modded down to 1, like you did with my stupid comment. Boy, did you ever show me! Wow!
Umm... Not that I really watch Reality TV, but I do have to point out that "The Real World" came out years before any of the other shows. In fact, MTV pioneered the entire idea.
In my previous installations, RedHat 6.0, 6.2 and 7.0, I have enjoyed RedHat very much. There is but only one thing which I wish was added, mainly to the anaconda installer. I have a 6-disk SCSI RAID array, and I run this in 0+1, or striped and mirrored. However, the anaconda installer only allows me to create RAID 1 and 0, and requires there be a mount point for eash RAID device I define. This could be solved by:
1. Including the existing RAID devices in the list to create a new RAID device.
2. Not requiring a mount point for each RAID device.
Would this be possible to fix in a boot disk or something of that sort? Untill then, I'll play with the command-line and try to get it done there.

I really, really like Sun hardware, and I'd hate to see it all go the way of the Alpha. Plus, what would happen to Java, I wonder?
Right...

I know, I know. It was just a sad attempt at humor, and not only was I beaten to the punch, but it failed horribly.
My personal opinion is that it it looks great just being what it is... Big, fast, did I mention big?
Most people won't understand what it really is, or why I think it's cool, but it sure is impressive.
I won't be investing 1.3mil in Sun 15ks if they can't survive Slashdot! For that kind of money, I expect it to survive!

Now, maybe some of you can get a clue!
