I've had a Rio Receiver for the past 6 months or so, and I can tell you that the number one benefit is that it _doesn't_ use your PC's processor. I can crunch graphics and play games while listening to my entire music collection and not worrying about the music or the apps getting bogged down.
Of course, the amusing part fo the story is that the mayor ran on a platform warning voters that without him, the town would turn into a police state [ocweekly.com].
I think it's a bit difficult to discount the current economy's role in the decrease in spending on random domain names. Google may play a role in this trend, but I'd guess that a lot of squatters have run out of cash to spend on wild speculation.
Actually, no. He was comparing the difference in two of Herbert's stories to the difference between two of Lucas' movies, which is much different than comparing the two men.
To clarify (much like the director did, so that the layman would understand after his words had been snipped into soundbytes and misinterpreted by people) in a simplistic fashion:
It's like comparing the difference between 30 and 40 to the difference between 10,000 and 10,010. No one would argue that 10,000 is the same as 30, but the difference between the two numbers in each set is the same. See? -----------------
It's easy to say that without doing any investigation.
It's only my opinion, but it's one of the most inriguing pieces of interactive literature I've ever seen. Corporate or not, it's damn good.

Actually, we don't set an amount. We reccomend a dollar or two a month, but it's up to the reader. We don't even check to see if you've actually donated -- it's all on the honor system.
The way I figure it, you should pay what it's worth to you, and if it's not worth anything to you, and you still read the site and go through the trouble of registering and shutting off the ads, then you're not the sort of person those advertisers want anyway.

Sadly, ad revenue has fallen to about 1/10th of where it was back in the day. While the revenue that we continue to pull in certainly helps, it's not enough on it's own.
Like most real-world businesses, the trick is to diversify your income streams -- McDonald's doesn't just sell plain hamburgers, nor should you expect to make money from just one source. Advertising + Reader Donations + merchandising = just about enough to stay afloat. -----------------
We're doing pretty well over at Goats using a combination of voluntary donations via the Amazon and PayPal system, along with incentives like the option to turn banner ads off for registered users. If your content is truly worth something to your users, you should be able to raise enough to keep yourself afloat with a similar system. -----------------
You can't ride a 50-pund laptop. 'Nuff said.
