    Yes, they probably would, but only if something went wrong. Plenty of people might be willing to say "ah, it'sll never happen" in pursuit of a quick buck. This is to stop those people, and make sure they have done whatever is considered minimum safety criteria.

    Killing someone in a car might be covered by manslaughter or murder laws, but driving still has it's own set of regulations to prevent you driving through residential areas at 100mph.

    Not to seem trite, but actually I can feel it in(side) my leg if I carry my mobile in my pocket. That's why I carry it in my bag, or don't carry it these days.

    I get a headache from using a mobile phone for more than a few minutes. There are plenty of other people who do also. Anecdotal for sure, but certainly something happens whether related to EM or not.

    Humans use electric signals in our bodies too. Is there some reason that it's impossible to interfere with them?

    The p4edit/p4add thing mostly goes away if you edit in Visual Studio, since it is integrated. When you try to change the file, it asks you if you want to check it out. If you add a file to a project, then it it automatically added to perforce. Not perfect by any means, but sounds better than what you are describing. I have found it o be incredibly slow for large projects with multiple users however.

    Have to say I disagree. You can always take a series of polls, and publish after the election result if you are concerned about it's validity. Polls distract from the real issues in an election, and journalists focus on asking candidates what are they going to do about their poll figures rather than what they are going to do about . Politicians focus on saying that they are clearly winning, and so don't bother with the other guy. This kind of meta-politics has no real value at all except to divert attention.

    The house wants people to win. It even wants them to win big. How do you think it is going to attract customers? All it needs to do is make a consistent profit, and grow its membership.

    Personally I think that it's time for OS manufacturers to start locking all software in their own little area, where they can read their own data, and write to the (virtual) devices that that they are explicitly granted access to. I know you can do something along these lines with jails in BSD and chroot in Linux, but really it needs to be the default for all applications, not an advanced extra.

    Learn to write safe C and make sure your algorithms are sound and healthy.
    Jeez, even as a C programmer, that doesn't seem like the solution to me. Using a safer language and/or having better OS protection seem like the way to go.

    It sounds crazy. What's to stop someone selling the "book rights" to a book. Does that mean it is never in the public domain?

    But developers in the US were not on reasonable money at all. Even at the height of the boom in Ireland IT staff were paid a fraction of what colleagues in the US were. That's the difference.

    US staff were overpaid, so the US outsourced a significant minority of IT jobs. Now there is a labour glut/job shortage, and will be until people move out of the industry. It's not a permanent situation, but it'll take time for their market to adjust.

    That's not to say that their industry won't suffer due to the effects of unnecessarily lost competencies, but such is life.

    You have to give your children more responsibilty and autonomy for them to take advantage of such a system. If their only concern in life is what is cool, then they will be only driven to learn what is cool.

    Let them go out and get a job, then maybe they'll start to think "gee, maybe I should study or something", alternatively they'll be perfectly happy in their new job, and not wasting anybody's time trying to force education on them.

    Why is dropping the problem kids a problem? If they don't want to learn that's their issue surely? Not everybody has to go to college. Not everybody has to complete high school.

    Many people make no meaningful progress in their education beyond a certain point, are just wasting their time in school when they could be out learning how to get on in the world.

    In Japan there are some phones now that can use the (not uncommon) TV out feature & built in mic and music player for Karaoke.

    I don't think any of the peak oil crowd are really claiming that we are going to run out of oil anytime soon. They are saying that once demand outstrips supply price will rise very rapidly. It's just basic economics. There will still be plenty of oil for those willing to pay for it (fight to control it). It will just become out of reach for many who now take it for granted.

    I prefer to say that it is more along the lines of tossing your empty bottle into someones trashcan they have set to the curb without a lid (it may not be "polite" and *some* people might not appreciate it too much....but you're not "stealing" their trash service by doing so).
    You are stealing if they have to pay for the service, as many people do. You may not be stealing *very much*, but stealing you are. If 20 people dump their rubbish in their trashcan, they can't dispose of their trash for that week, and have lost their paid for service. What if they have to pay per bag? etc... all these apply to wifi too.

    If the signal enters your, or public property, then you have the right to listen to it, and they don't have any real right to complain. Secured or not, that is basically it unless you are informed otherwise by the owner however.

    I wouldn't be pirating your app. I would be operating under the terms of your license. If you think there's no difference between breaking the law and not, why bother with a license at all?

    I have to agree with this. Embedded systems often have bugs that don't happen in the debugger, or it may not even be possible to use a debugger in the exact target environment. Bugs still get fixed. Code review, trace messages, logfiles, ... allow you to do this.

    I realize someone could do the same thing with GPL'd software, but at least you have the legal protection if you need it.
    Not to troll, but do you really? How much does RedHat or Suse pay for the GPL apps that they bundle in their product? Granted, nobody can merge it into another program, but they can certainly re-sell it, or base their system around it.
