Not to dismiss the neat reverse engineering he did, but is the actual discovery that big a deal? It's just a keypress handler, and some server communication. No big deal on any graphical user interface other than a web page.
Google have good UIs because they hire smart people. Other people don't because they don't hire smart people, or hire the wrong type of smarts (graphic designer instead of sw engineer for the coding part of a website, and vice versa).
You can compare it to what percentage failed last year, failed courses under different professors, failed the same test in a different district, etc...
There are indeed ethical considerations, but I think those are on the part of the parents involved and are a private matter.
I find that argument bizarre. To be "parents" there have to be "children", and we don't routinely donate children for research. Secondly, parents don't own their children to do with as they please, and it's not a private matter how they treat them. Why should it be any different for embryos?
Fork all you want, having good editors won't get you anything. The value of slashdot is in the comment writers (who reads TFAs after all?). The big problem any fork will have is getting the kind of critical mass necessary to create an interesting discussion. e.g. there's a site http://modfoo.com/ that has basically the same stories as slashdot, but uses an edit queue like kuro5hin. However 5 comments on a story is a good response after a few months of its operation.
No it doesn't. The US doesn't have a preferential voting system, so the most that you can say is that 48% wanted Kerry more than Bush. Many of them may have been quite happy to have Bush over Nader, or other candidates.
Go and ask computer users (both novices and professionals) about what they think of the software they use day to day. Most will complain about the software they use (unreliable, unstable, missing essential capabilities...). That alone tells us there is still much more work to be done.
I think the point is that these issues are not going to be solved by C++ or Java programmers. There is a need to eliminate whole classes of problems the same way that memory management issues, buffer ofverflows, etc... are eliminated by not using C. They are a higher level of problem that's all.
They have the ability to develop into walking talking people like you and me. They are not going to develop into cats or dogs rats or elephants. Their intrinsic nature is human.
To say they are not human needs to have some basis other than your say so, otherwise the guy does have the high moral ground, claimed or not, and speaks from more authority than you just by virtue of his argument having some basis in reality.
I'm not saying there is no reason, but you certainly haven't given one, you only resorted to insults.
Abortion is legalised because the negative impact from an absolute ban on women who inadvertently become pregnant outweighs the negative impact to the undeveloped human.
I don't see any such equivalent person who's rights could possibly override the rights of these manufactured embryos. Who is being victimized by not allowing them to be treated in this way?
You may claim medical and research benefits, but nobody has the right to deny someone else life for such flimsy reasons.
On what basis can you say that it's not immoral to manufacture humans for the purpose of harvesting them? The only argument I can see that could possibly be legitimate is that "they are not human", which the grandparent post had ruled out by equating them with regular twins. Hence my question.
The only other alternative, which I don't really consider legitimate is "I don't care that they are human", though maybe that's ok your hammer carrying God in your signature.
Just curious, how can you compare clones to same-egg twins, and then be surprised that people object to wholesale killing of them? Or are you somehow arguing that same-egg twins have no right to live?
If you mean that abortion is acceptable, that's a fair enough point, but you can hardly be surprised that some people will disagree. Like it or not many people see this kind of research as mass produced abortion.
Speeding is a crime though. That's the point. Launching a spaceship (in a residential area:-)without due care should also be a crime regardless of whether you kill someone or not.
I believe that should be:
1) Distribute OS for free
2) ???
3) Watch others Profit!

They used to hang people for stealing. Harsh treatment for crime is nothing new.
Yes, one has the potential to become violent.
Yeah, nobody ever posted copyrighted material on USENET. Oh wait...
You can compare it to what percentage failed last year, failed courses under different professors, failed the same test in a different district, etc...
So what you are saying they are ok with not using landmines except in those places that they want to use landmines. Whoop-de-doo.
Because you (or at least a huge % of "they") are going to buy a phone anyway that's how.

No, that's the default in the rest of the world. The grandparent is correct.
What do you mean fake shutter noise?!
I disagree. This is not an award for technologists. It's for film makers and actors. Take a look at the list of previous winners.

As for religious claptrap, I'm an atheist.

Which is why DOS is still used as the basis for many real time projects.
This got a funny mod, but those OS (or OS versions if you prefer) represent a huge percentage of the market out there.
He has enough trouble coming up with one poor ending for each of his books. You want him to give an alternative?
Patents my good man, patents. It's not a free market as far as replacement razor blades are concerned.
If people don't support Kerry or Bush, how is voting for a different candidate spoiling the election? The 2 large parties don't own the vote.
