I use Firefox on both Windows and Mac, and have not had the need for shockwave yet, java and flash shoul d be standard too. At least this just wraps them all up in 1 package.
It is possible to be off the grid, but on the web. People are allowed to change their minds on issues, they are only human. I would be more scared if someone kept the same viewpoint in spite of evidence to the contrary. Like say, hypothetically, reasons for going to war.
Jobs are being added, but if you take a look at the jobs lost versus the jobs added, you will see the ones that were added pay a lot less than the ones that were lost.
My mom can not vote anyway (she's Irish), so she tends to stay out of politics in general.
The fact is that over the last 4 years, our rights have gone out the window, that is a fact, I have a clue. Until recently, the government could hold you without charges, incommunicado, for however long they felt like. They still have the PATRIOT act at their disposal, they can tap your phone, net connection, and subpoena pretty much anything for no reason, and the subpoenaed party is not even allowed to tell you.
I am not far left, I am an independent, I just tend to think about things.
How many of the programs that many low-income families depend on to hold down jobs and contribute to society have been cut to support that tax cut? It feels like the 80s, when Reaganomics had Americans hating the poor. Just because I have a heart and care about people does not make me far left.
I doubt very seriously that everyone who voted on PATRIOT knew it would be abused in the way it has been.
I realise Mr. Bush has not appointed a justice, but they tend to side with the Republicans most of the time. They are an obsolete, monolithic institution, I would suggest term limits of less that "until you die". I could mention the Scalia-Cheney duck huntin trip that "wasn't a conflict of interest", but that would be too easy.
I too got a tax cut, and I am by no means rich, but I would rather ensure the fiscal future of our nation for our descendents than be able to make an extra payment on my debts now. Social security is doomed, we have a war to pay for, the deficit is sky high, were gaining "mcjobs", dollar is weak against the euro, and I get a little bit more money back? Thanks, but no thanks. Taxes are a necessary evil. At least most Democrats are "tax and spend", instead of "cut taxes, and spend pretty much the same, if not more, and think that companies will contribute to the economy instead of heading overseas to duck those taxes and take profits wherever they can".
I fear we are going in circles. We have a Republican President and a Republican Congress, makes it easier for them to get their agenda through that way, without fear of veto. The President is a figurehead who has to represent the values that our nation espouses, ours should not represent "bring it on" and "watch this drive".
Makes me seriously want to live off the grid. I do not feel any more secure knowing some hack has information on 98% of the U.S. population on a glorified palm pilot, what if this device "walks away"? All that info in the wrong hands (ACTUAL BADGUYS, id thieves, spammers, etc) is scary. I hate the fact that when 19 foreign citizens do some bad shit, 300 million legal Americans have to pay for the incompetance of our government to stop it. It is a classic kneejerk reaction, the current administration has eroded 200 years of balanced liberty and security in 4 years, that has to be some kind of record. I feel less safe, and downright ashamed of our preemptive attacks and feeble attempts at nation building. The way the little guy has taken it in the ass in these past 4 years is astounding. Where to begin? The overtime ripoff, outsourcing, tax cuts for the rich, PATRIOT act, PATRIOT II, TIA, DMCA, "show me your papers", and that is just the beginning. I would vote for Nader if I thought he could actually win, so I will vote for Kerry instead. Mr. Kerry has actually come out with stances on issues, most of which I agree with. I was worried he was not going to have any discernible viewpoint on anything for a second.
I see your point regarding advertising and reviews. One of the links led to a chart that was totally biased toward that company's own product, not very impartial, IMHO. I don't mind paying for Linux software either, Crossover plugin comes to mind, as does Winex. I agree that there is plenty of software available to replace common Windows apps, you just have to pay for them sometimes. Most Linux users recognize the difference between free as in beer, and free as in speech.
First of all, I have no blinders on of any shade, I have a Powerbook, a Linux PC and an XP PC. They all have their purposes. XP for games, Linux to mess with, and OS X to run every day. I administer a windows network, and yes, most of my users know to save things in compatibility mode, and we don't rush to the latest just because it is the latest. Office 2000 works fine for 99.9% of people.
This is utterly shameless. You can save things in compatibilty mode in excel, so that they can be read by previous versions of the software, most users know this already. How the hell is it OOO's fault if the file is password protected? The chart is from the company that makes the software, not a unbiased third party, I could craft a document that would work better in one program or the other, I have not seem OOO stoop to that level. And another thing, Planmaker costs money $50 USD or Euro. This is an advertisement masked as an article.
No, why not solve the energy crisis at the same time? Attach a buttered piece of toast on the cat's back. Since cats always land on their feet, and toast always lands butter side down, you will create a perpetual motion machine, with the cat just spinning in place.
I had to look at the calendar to make sure it was not April 1. What on earth are schools going to do with Big Pun, and Will Smith cds? Besides use them for coasters in Chemistry class? Even when the RIAA loses, they still win. They are like a cat that always lands on it's feet. So they have to "pay" by clearing out warehouse space and writing off the "losses", ouch.
OK, agreed, but only if the IM is used for legitimate business purposes, in which case, I would probably stick with the official client, just to avoid headaches such as these. I would call a service that does not cost you money free, that is the very definition, no? Of course the ads infect your subconscious, that is what they are there for. If you ask 95% of the population if ads affect them, or if they remember specific spots, they will say yes. Like it or not, advertising and sponsorship keeps a whole plethora of goods and services more affordable. You would notice if you were spending $100 on a ticket, rather than $20. Then you would be complaining about the prices. I think most people are getting desensitised to adverts anyway, they are usually so dull and unimaginative and insulting that I just tune them out. I suppose according to Time-Warner that I am "stealing", but I can live with that.
Sorry, it is not the job of every software manufacturer to release a version of their software for your platform. That is not being evil, it is probably a business decision. If you have that much time to ruminate about IM at work, you need something else to do. The crossover plugin or wine or vmware may let you run MSN messenger, no promises though. I just use AIM/GAIM/iChat, mostly because it is already cross-platform, and preinstalled on most Linux and OS X loads.
Is this really the biggest priority of the African continent? I take it AIDS, poverty, disease and famine are taken care of then....no? I fear that wi-fi will become just another abstract thing that you will have to have, like public bathrooms. I really don't see what these projects will actually do. Like 103 miles of wi-fi in New Mexico, whoopty fucking doo, and in rest stops, who cares? I go on trips to escape technology, not lug it with me.
Is this article supposed to make Yahoo look evil? If so, I don't see how. I know the popular notion on/. that "information wants to be free", but Yahoo provides a free service, and as with a free service, you are at the mercy of the provider. So Yahoo wants you to use their official client, it isn't the end of the world, nor do I think it is even newsworthy here on/. I am prepared for the inevitable karma loss on this comment, but I have been maxed out for years, it does not bother me anymore.
Licensing is an issue, period. If you play regular music, even the radio, be prepared for a letter from the RIAA, and possibly ASCAP asking for back royalties. I use On-Hold Plus from On-Hold Plus, Inc. It is royalty-free as well, just stick the CD in the player, hit repeat, and you are good, I am fairly certain they are just one long track. Hope this helps. Linkage
You should have posted as "anonymous mugu".
I use Firefox on both Windows and Mac, and have not had the need for shockwave yet, java and flash shoul d be standard too. At least this just wraps them all up in 1 package.
I do not see this working, because what would stop someone from hax0ring someone and spamming, then turning them in?
You could set up an FTP site, or switch ISPs.
How would a democratic congress and president be as bad? I would much rather have a balance of power, and more parties than just our two.
Skynet has officially become self-aware.

Not a troll, just speaking my mind, mod me troll if you like. Remember, there was a Republican Congress in 98.
I fear we are going in circles. We have a Republican President and a Republican Congress, makes it easier for them to get their agenda through that way, without fear of veto. The President is a figurehead who has to represent the values that our nation espouses, ours should not represent "bring it on" and "watch this drive".
They are the ones who gave it teeth, remember, who controlled the Congress at that time? The president is merely a figurehead.

Oh, I guarantee you I could figure out a way to keep a piece of toast attached to the cats back. I can't believe I just said that.
Someone has to say it, they are opening the source on purpose this time? It's probably just the Microsoft Bob code, or worse, Clippy.
No, why not solve the energy crisis at the same time? Attach a buttered piece of toast on the cat's back. Since cats always land on their feet, and toast always lands butter side down, you will create a perpetual motion machine, with the cat just spinning in place.
