"That's exactly why I have a problem with nuclear power generation!"
The way I see it, you can either have a very small amount of lethally radioactive substance that you can hide away or eventually blast into the sun whereas the main alternative currently would not be renewable energy but fossil fuels. No big companies would make as much money from renewable energy so it wouldn't be as big as it should be. So we're all merrily burning fossil fuels happy that we're not producing any more nasty radioactive waste. Then we mess up the ratios of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the whole planet is fucked instead of just the few miles around the dumping sites.
This is why I don't have such a big problem with nuclear power generation.
I've not used corel but this linneighbourhood is a really good smb fileshare browser for linux. Not really sure if you want an smb client or server from ur post. Try using SWAT if you want an easier to configure server.
Its a bad story and I feel sorry for the administrator, but I can't help but ask:
You have your postmaster account catching ALL domain email that isnt to a valid account and you're suprised you get spam?
Why don't you just bounce mails to non-existant accounts and ignore them. Sounds like it would save you a lot of time. Not to mention hassle from those annoying spambots that get a domain and randomly invent usernames for user@domain.com then email every single one until they hit some that work. As soon as you experience one of those you will realise how annoying catchall accounts are. Those bots generate a LOT of usernames.
probably not I can remember amiga software having toolbars and I'm pretty sure it was around before windows came out. See PageStream DTP software for one example. I can also remember laughing at win3.1 because it was so primitive compared to workbench:)
I agree totally. I have a few of the critters in my front room and they are more intelligent than people think. They are also more intelligent than many posters on slashdot.
As to the issue of cruelty, well if rats have been brought up around people they love attention and as long as they're not mishandled and they're not in pain they won't be too bothered about having stuff strapped on them (since all it does it simulate something touching their whiskers). So these rats probably had a better quality of life than ones that live in the gutter and end up dying slowly of pneumonia.
Its not just the transistors. What I was told, which makes sense, is that the conducting tracks in the chips are tiny and even small static shocks can damage these tracks. They aren't damaged enough to stop current flowing but the damage gets slowly worse, eventually breaking. This is what I understand to be latent failure. I'll admit this could well be the invention of the static-gear manufacturors but it makes sense scientifically and I'm not going to risk it with my servers, although that doesnt mean buying anti-static equipment...
I know somebody's gonna flame me for this,
Well they can flame me too then because you just described my anti-static precautions. I leave the PC plugged in, if you turn the wall plug off the earth is still connected so you are earthed by touching the chassis.
how many of those systems will die 2 years earlier down the line because of latent failures created when you worked on them. The FET transistors and high-density components in PC's are sensitive to static electricity. Just because it doesn't fail as soon as you plug it in doesn't mean you haven't damaged it. From the huge amount of faulty parts (RAM etc) I had when I was an engineer I'd guess lots of people in the industry don't bother with anti-static.
it is crap. The benefits however would probably be that by either 2005 or 2010 all UK terrestrial TV will be broadcast digitally and Microsoft will own what is currently the largest digital terrestrial broadcaster in the UK.
Non-subscription digital boxes are supposed to be going on sale here soon and I'm sure itv digital is capable of broadcasting unscrambled signals, especially when those signals will be receieved by the x million homes without SKY in the uk.
Well, I've just booked my plane ticket out of here anyway.
His comments about the computer operating in black hole was interesting. Similar to the minds in the Iain M Banks Culture series of books which are basically supercomputers with the outer shell in real space and the "cpu" in hyperspace......
Its also worth noting that our two main theories, Relativity and Quantum Mechanics don't work together in that they cannot both be correct, Since a new theory to bring them together is being looked for I personally don't believe quantum computers are the limit.
"Amazing that people will pay $70 to register a domain to point at goatse.cx."
I thought.cx hosts were free if you were going to use them for opensource projects... I guess goatse.cx is literally an "open source" so would be eligable.
"We have and continue to innovate within the spirit and letter of the law. We continue to do what we have always done, because we think it's 100 percent correct."
there was a test run by byte on freebsd 4.1.1 vs linux 2.4 for various server tasks. Slashdot article is here and a direct link is here . Not sure if it's what you're after but its a start:)
I would agree with the other posters saying bsds are better for server and linux for desktop, although you can exchange them. I don't use bsd for desktop because it doesn't support nvidias drivers (linux only) and netscape is much less stable on fbsd than slackware on my system. All my work computers I installed freebsd on.
mail them, definately, do it anonymously if you want via webmail, there are enough free email places around.
I'd want to know if anyone was using my network for anything DoS related and I'm sure any shellhosting company would act if they knew their systems were involved, if not mail their upstream provider and get them to deal with it.
All it will probably result in is the server being moved elsewhere but imo if they allow the hosting to continue they are being negligent, and possibly making themselves partially liable for any DoS attacks started from that server. Not sure how this would stand up in court.
As an administrator I am more than happy for this worm to infect your system, no offence, but if you havent patched it and already have these worms then all your system means to me is another DDoS host for kiddies, and we can all do without those.
Whether you want it or not, in my opinion if someone runs a server thats open to these worms they are on the verge of negligance, anything that stops their negligence/stupidity from helping dumb kids take my network offline is a good thing.
Surely the only bad thing that will ever come is a) if the worm code is abused/altered to make a more malicious worm, since there are already plenty of malicious worms around this is a bit of a wasted argument and
b) if you aren't vulnerable you might get a tcp connection attempt logged on some silly port, which you probably won't even notice among all the normal everyday trojan/backdoor/service scans.
Now, what would I rather have, all the dumbass admin systems patched by some worm, or by some kid so he can keep DoSing from it for the next 3 years. Well put it this way....the worm isn't going to want to proove to someone on irc how much bandwidth they have:)
I may be missing something about american law but surely this is the single most important point to this case. The argument against is that it violates laws by allowing copies to be made but in reality its use is to watch dvd's.
If you cannot watch dvd's what the fuck is the point in buying them? Whether its in the briefs or not imo this point should be drummed into the judges heads again and again, this is a tool for watching dvds, whether it was designed to show the inadequacies or the css or not who gives a flying fuck, thats a personal problem for the people that designed it not a legal problem for linux users wanting to view it, whether one possible use is to copy dvd's....so fucking what, any half intelligent person can think of illegal things to do with almost any household object but as they have a legitimate use they are allowed.
Sorry if I'm restating the whole argument but the MPAA are using the crowbar analogy and as someone else said before, crowbars are not illegal. I also think once this case is over we should personally visit our local mpaa reps and shove crowbars up their respective arses just to really rub it in.
According to one of my lecturors the industry is working towards total use of VDSL, the high speed dsl running at 34Mbit symmetric or 52Mbit downstream 6.4mbit up, this needs fiber to within 2km of the user for the asymmetric version, the 52mbit has maximum reach of 300metres from the nearest fiber.
I'm not sure how correct he is but I'd guess if this is the way things are headed we won't be getting fiber to home. Note this is his opinion not mine, I'll probably still be on dialup since I live in the UK.
windows users can use it if they like, I'm indifferent to other peoples choices.
I'm not indifferent to companies trying to retain market share through use of FUD instead of through superior products, and I can easily see why some people would go as far as to hate them and their products for it, which seems to be the general point here.
"People have the right to choose their OS!"
yes but they should be choosing it because its performance/features match their needs, not because they read some leaflet saying the opposition was crap, or because they never knew there was any opposition.
yea use the windows ftp client blah blah blah </moron>
I agree, how many times has it been argued that windows is using BSDs tcpip code with the only proof afaik being that the ftp client is from BSD.
Just because one tiny, very simple application which, since the source is open would only need tiny modifications to work with a completely different tcp stack is used, how does this proove anything about the rest of the networking code?
Note that I don't follow microsofts news so please go ahead and post links where their developers talk about how they used BSD code, please show me these news stories where this was discovered, please dont just say

this page is their test and it complains about the missing doctype too.
You have to put the url in, slashdots crudbuster wouldn't let me post the complete addy.

IE can do this, they just don't document it. Hold control and spin the mouse wheel.
theres also a list of allocated IP blocks here which might help.
The first popular OS I'm aware of that used them was Xerox's gui for its Star 8010 machine. Info available here.
This was a bit before my time in 1981.

What the hell is a "latent failure"?
Latent: Not visible or apparent; hidden.

at least the 100 percent bit was relevant

can't remember where I heard this quote but it seems scientifically sound to me:
"the best evidence for extraterrestrial intelligence is that none of it has tried to contact us"
