I'll believe it when my junk email is reduced by even 1% over the course of a month. Even without engaging in 'spam-risky' internet behaviour, ie - using real email address on newsgroups, web boards, signing up for free porn etc, I get a very large load of spam daily. One program that has been great is Mailwasher. This little utility allows you to bounce, blacklist and delete your spam before you download the actual message from your server. I then monthly take the blacklist it generates and add the email address or sometimes a whole domain to my email servers reject file... But still spammers get craftier and craftier. If only I could make a filter that would filter out anything like 12k3jhk213 and asdfl231.. hmm..
The thing that bothers me the most about this is how much time and money it cost Chip just to defend himself. How many of us have those resources? If someone came after one of my domains, I'd fight as much as I could on my own, but in the end would probably be forced to give up. Thats what these corporate types want. they have the money and the resources to do this. There needs to be a law to protect US from this behavior.

There already is an area like this, It's called the Amish Country, Pennsylvania Dutch, etc. Seriously. The article describes being bothered by anything electronic, ranging from radio waves to hairdryers. May as well go back to the horse and buggy.
We as the 'power user' community, ie, the 3% that the companies talk about that actually USE the product that they sell to us, need to be heard on the issue. If a company could provide us with and IP address, and a relatively high speed pipe, for a fair price, we could keep the cost to them down by not needing any of the BS that they waste so much money on. I don't need someone to sell me 'video email, only with this company' blah blah, i can do video email with any company, AOL if i wanted to. Rediculous. Put a wire in my house with an IP address. I'll pay what it is worth. The only reason I'm upset about paying $50 for the cable service I have now is that they whine and cry about every little thing I do. I'd easily pay $100 for something that was under my control, I could have control over the dns, etc. 4 sets of numbers. That's all I want/need to ever hear from the provider.
I still like the old, big towers that are about the height of your desk. you can fit so many goodies in there, who cares if you really need them or not, you still CAN have them. Why does everything have to be so small these days? Little tiny cars,pager sized cell phones, cell phone size computers, small PC cases, iMac's and other similar computers (gateway profile etc, basically laptops on sticks). No thanks, not for this guy anyway. I'll keep my big truck, my clunky cell phone, and my 3 foot tall computer case.
Without specific proof, I'd be very willing to say that it's not just students. As the internet grows, and we get faster computers, and more visually intense websites, its only obvious that bandwidth demands for EVERYONE is going to grow. The size of applications and games has also risen, and even downloading legal demos and share/freeware games is bandwidth intensive, this is not even to mention 'warez' and the fact that nobody seems to be happy with porn 'pics' anymore, they want vids. So, as download sizes grow, its only obvious that bandwidth demands will also grow.
I would easily pay one fee to one company for all those services, but be damn sure that it is NOT going to be AOL or MS, sorry but it would have to be to a company that has at least proven it self to be semi-retuable. I use comcast now for cable. I don't use cable TV, but I am kicking around the idea. Supposedly the new comcast plan is going to include some form of IP-telephony (at the cost of my newsgroups I hear, so add another bill for 3rd party news server) $230 is PROBABLY a fair price for all the things they claim to offer, but, ever try to get tech support from AOL? Before I moved in with my fiance and enlightened her to the fact that AOL is not the only place to get internet service (people REALLY still dont know this) I tried several times to get a few things working a little better for her. All I wanted was someone who could speak even a LITTLE tech so I could figure out something that was actually quite simple, but I coudlnt solve without a little technical insight onto how the service works. Now, imagine if you had to call AOL tech support because your service is down. Wait you cant. They host your telephone too. Email them. oops. cant do that. Oh well, I guess I'll go watch some TV while they work out the bugs themselves. OH NO! I cant do that either! I think you all get my point.
Check out CyberResearch (PDF) or Their Website for some nice machines like you describe. I know I've posted about them before, I used to work for them, and while, this stuff is not cheap, it is high quality and they stand behind it. If this is going to be your livelyhood, why not do it right the first time. I'd rather spend $3000 once then spend $1000 4 times.

It's a shame broadband internet services cant seem to turn a profit. I'd like to see a cable provider provide me with an IP address, and thats it. I'll take care of my email and other services. Something like 'Broadband for Nerds. Simplicity Matters.' or.. something like that...
Trust me. I work for a BioTech. Most of the company has at least one PhD. Having a PhD does not make you smart or realize that your computer is not actually plugged into a valid power source.
I'm using Mailwasher it works well for me. Allows you to preview your message headers, delete,blacklist and 'bounce' anything you dont want to recieve. Works well on spam as well as email from your ex-girlfriend.
I dont see how shutting something down is a victory for anyone. So they owe 750 million bucks. When they stop getting 45% of the cable modem users ~$50 a month, they are still gonna be 750 million in debt, with no income. I dont understand. Of course, IANAA (i am not an accountant)
Thats not the case here. My modem is capped at 3mb down and 128k up. So I only have so much to use. If I have 300 computers on my network, and they all wanted to use them at the same time, OR If I had one computer, and I wanted to download mp3's from a fast server at full speed. The same amount of bandwidth is being used. It's like everything today, and it sucks - people want 'pay per use' and I apoligize for not putting any thought into how to verbalize this part of what I'm trying to say, because it stews and boils in my head constantly. Everyone wants you to pay for each little thing these days. Pay-Per-View, pay-for play' high school sports, and what about those DVD's you could 'buy' but had to pay to watch it each time you wanted to watch it. Luckily that one never really took off. I don't much like where the world is going right now. I can fully understand the need to make a buck. but where to we draw the line?

I don't know how the programmers in my company feel about this, but I tend to agree with Brenner in that it should be kept open-source. Of course, the size of my paycheck may depend on it costing an arm and a leg.
If I am going to pay retail price for software (i'm not but if..) for the ten dollars, I want a box, a book, a cd, and any other fluff that comes in that box.
