    use waste heat for heating

Yes, but how do you transport the heat large distances? Electricity is so much more flexible.

On the other hand...squirels ferrying baked potatoes around is a very, very funny idea.

insurrection was fairly forgetable. V however was by far, the worst ST movie of em all.

At least the romulans can provide for some good plot material.

  3. Re:Cost comparison??? on 3Com's 10/100 Switching... Wallplate · · Score: 1

I see your point, but the distributed power is what makes this poduct hot. Two reasons:

1-On the minihubs it's designed to replace, the external power adapter dies long before the hub.

2-There are no power cables to kick out of the wall, or pull from the hub.

If you move all the power to a centralized point, it becomes less prone to luser mishaps, and can be better protected from power problems.

The only thing it's lacking is surge protection on the individual ports. -Chris

./ blasts MS whenever they try to keep a known exploit quiet for whatever reason, but then goes ahead and blasts Redhat for spilling the beans.

I thought the whole point of OS was so that you can make changes/fixes yourself? I'd rather go a week without a distro patch, then not know about the exploit at all. At least then i can disable the daemon, or impliment a kludge fix.

More importantly...a large percentage of cd's produced these days are terribly mastered. I'm not talking garage band/ low budget presses...but large label releases.

Perhaps a bit more care went into vinyl recordings...

These don't look like files essential to boot windows.

Man....If solitare gets corrupted I'm screwed.

Not bloody likely. a three year old PIII 500 is still going for 80+ on ebay....where for 80 you can buy a brand new 1Ghz/100 celeron.

With CPU prices lower then ever now, they don't seem to have the same rapid depreciation that they used to. This probably makes CPU's a fairly good investment.

Anything else seems unreasonably anal considering the pervious generation of backup was analogue cassette and no one complained about quality unless they were paid professionals; paying much cash to use stuff like blackburst boxes to keep quality regression down, but never to eliminate it completely.
If no one complained about the quality of cassette, then why have cd's entirely eclipsed them in album sales?

where are you getting that about the cases? i don't see anything even remotely resembling the PCP personal case...and if you have seen similar cases out there it's far more likely that they're generic clones of the PCP cases and not vice versa.

And their power supplies do rock...take one apart and compare it to your antec. The PCP is much better.

I'm questioning the video card choice. What's wrong with a matrox G4xx? matrox has full open source drivers, and top notch 2d. It seems like a radeon in a "non-gaming machine" is a heck of a waste when the G4xx offers higher quality and cheaper solution.
