Tom, a spade is either a kind of playing card or a garden tool.
Calm down there, Spike A spade is a spade. If I'm talking to a card shark, I know what he means. Likewise if I'm talking to a landscaper. It's called "context"
The whole affair is an attempt by Micros~1 to get developers to change their focus to something irrelevant. Unfortunately for them there is no one person in charge of development to delegate who works on what. Sure, Linus calls the shots on what makes it into the kernel, but he doesn't tell people what to work on.
Not the same thing Sparky, the processor doesn't need a distinct ID. Of course, I'm sure the original poster would take a SPARC though, and they've had processor ID's long time
No he's right actually, Linux is _not_ unix, it may be *nix and its definitely POSIX (although to what degree I do not know), and thats what really counts.. BSD on the other hand has a unix bloodline so even though its *nix, I'd say its unix but not Unix.
Be real..put yer _own_ distro together. After all you can just download the parts. Or better yet write your own kernel and utilities. Debians great but if I wannabee hard core I should download it, right? Why should the evil CD replication plant make any money? Or the evil CheapBytes or the evil post office? Or the evil book store? Maybe I should just shoot myself...
Seriously though, everybody should use what _they_ want and if things get out of hand... use a _different_ BRAND. Thats what the distros are anyway _BRANDS_ like any other consumer item. Whether you like it or not.
that the poster is a troll. His tactic is right out of the original IBM playbook. Personally I thought he was a moron until I got to his last paragraph, where he claims to be supportive of linux. For about a minute I thought he was legit, but then I realized what was going on. I thought it was funny that he stated that people have a choice because Redhat is on the shelves at bestbuy. While this may be true _today_, what about two years ago? Sure maybe there was OS/2, but until systems come either preinstalled with the buyers choice _or_ dual boot so newbies can see for themselves and make a decision based on firsthand experience then the deck is stacked in Micros~1's favor.
On a side note... I just built my 10 year old nephew a homebrew system with SuSE on it (actually we both built it). He's had it for a week and I had to field a sum total of 2 support calls. One was he forgot the command to turn on the sound, the other was because he discovered deathmatch mode in QuakeII and he wanted to know why there was nobody attacking him. FWIW he's using KDE.... It's remarkable for a 3 yo to speak french, unless they live in france, that is.
Theres way more than 400 packages in SuSE. A full install is just over 4 gigs. Debian is great, but it's better if you have a T1.... I just checked, SuSE 6.0 has 1845 packages
They oughta do one like that... I can see it now... Gates uses dirty tricks to kick Linus ass, but then the audience mobs the ring and rips Billyboy up.
How about this? The end users only have to deal with one program. Its more of a psychological advantage, I admit, but people whine enough about having to learn one program.

how about 'ill eat a cup full of my own steaming hot semen' that would be alot more interesting
What you do in your spare time is your own business Sparky
Yeah? Well screw you pal. I, for one, would use OS/2 on PPC, if such a thing existed. Ah well at least PPC owners got OSX now...

/. acct# 449
Or even a cabbie or a writer of cheesy sci-fi

Was that _pubic_ office? Woulda been even funnier if one 'ems first name was Harry.
"Do you want Microsoft or Linux with that server?"
br. sounds a little to much like "would you like frie with that?"

but he should STFU and worry about GNOME instead... Uh, Oh yeah, I forgot RedHat's connection to GNOME.
Ah well I'm gonna burn in hell for using SuSE anyway so what do I know.
Spoken like somebody who never used a distro besides redhat

apt is in the upgrade directory on the binaries cd
Borders bookstore has Debian
Its only unusual if you consider Redhat to be the "standard". I have yet to see 2 distros use the exact same layout. Mandrake/Redhat doesn't count....
We all know how important USB is on servers....

No, but I'll give you 3 guesses were the battery goes. This sounds like just the thing to take down that damn energizer bunny.....

Who else would wear a purple satin shirt with puffy sleeves?
Seriously though, geeks of his caliber don't like anything.
The voodoo3 works in 2d, no 3d accel _yet_ but they're working it.
Actually ssh2 already has an sftp.....
Yeah? Then he probably did it on purpose.
