It's true that people would still tend to go with a micros~1 version of windows and theoretically micros~1 could make their new version of windows suffer from the same kinds of interoperability issues they have now, but it would take considerable time to do this and they already have their hands full trying to launch W2K. I tend to doubt that resources would be diverted to accomplish repollution of the code. It would also require getting people to upgrade _again_ to get off the ground. I didn't see in the article just exactly which codebase they would be licensing. I could foresee a compromise situation where the W2K codebase is exempt, after all not on the market. It would be interesting to see how quickly the released codebase became abandoned by MS.
How _do_ we know he's not stupid? Because he's wealthy? He was _born_ wealthy. Sure , maybe not the wealthiest man in the world, but he _never_ had to worry, he was set for life from the get go. I offer the following URL as proof.

Now if you should doubt the veracity of this info, consider the recent pressure put on Segfault and UserFriendly. As a further indicator of Micros~1's penchant for quashing information about Gates that isn't 100% factual, go look at Bill Gates Secret Diary. The last entry is almost a _year_ old!
Y'know this restaurant makes the best shit sandwiches... I've been eating here for 1.5 years so I have intimate knowledge of all the restaurants I haven't eaten at during that time.
In my experience RH 5 and 5.1, while having some nice features, are a detriment to Linux reputation as a stable system. I was so frustrated by 5.0's crappyness that I had _3_ replacement CD's sent to me from linuxcentral in the mistaken belief that they _must_ be defective. Next step? Buy official boxed set from retail outlet. Still crap. Solution? Switch back to 4.1 which lived up to the hype, stability wise. 5.1 gets released, run out to retail outlet, buy boxed set. Install. Still crap. Return to 4.1 while waiting for 5.2. 5.2 released, give it month to get in store, while tracking redhat erratta and updates.. still faithful, run to retailer.... Surprise! no RH5.2 _but_ they have Debian _and_ SuSE 5.3...Purchase SuSE, install, relax enjoy system that lives up to hype. I also tried Caldera OpenLinux Lite 1.0 (crap) and Slackware, which was good but the defaults seemed to be low on security and at the time I wasn't up to fixing it. Hell, I even replaced all my hardware because of sig11 faults when trying to compile a kernel under RH5*.. Of course, most of the probs I _had_ were related to using the system as a desktop machine.
As stated, with regard to system administration, by Jamie Zawinski of mozilla fame, who,I might point out, is a programmer not an admin...

Nice analogy... I often use the automobile industry one myself, but that addresses a different aspect of what's happening. Part of the reason that DIY became mainstream for homeowners was TV shows like "this old house" et al which gave people information about construction thereby demystifying it. There's plenty of people who'd rather pay a contractor to do the work but there are also plenty of people who can _afford_ to pay a contractor but still prefer to get down and dirty.
I'd also like to suggest that more important for Joe User is the availability of documentation than source code. Sure, sometimes the HOW-TO's are a little dated, but the info contained therein is still _useful_. Contrast this with the value of the "manual" that comes with, oh, lets say MS Exchange server, which fits more into the category of "brochure". In order to get any real info you need to spend $$ on a support contract and even then it's painfully time consuming to get answers that at best provide a course of action without any reason as to how or why things work (or don't work as the case may be)
I have windows and I want to try linux... I go buy a copy of SuSE..... Insert boot floppy...... Insert live filesystem CD...... Power up..... Select option to run filesystem off CD... Get login prompt......... Pass out from exhaustion/frustration......
The main thing people freak over is disk partitioning. SuSE and IIRC, RedHat current disto's can automagically partition the drive for you. Some enterprising vendor should bundle linux CD's with purchase of new HD.
It just hit me how they can get away with this. The PIII has higher clock speed that PII. If you have a (shudder) Winmodem (lots of people do) you'll theoretically get better performance because the extra cycles make up for the overhead of the winmodem.
I just upgraded to a K6-2 400 from a K6 233 and it's pretty sweet. The K6 replaced the P133 in my other box.... The AMD's have excellent price/performance ratio.
Yeah, it needs frames, some animated gifs and a cheezy midi file, gratuitous javascript and some porno banners. Also wheres the warez and MP3 sections? Remember if ain't got a black background and text of a color not found in nature it ain't leet.
PS don't forget the blink tags and the scrolling marquee.
On a serious note... Congrats to all involved, it's gonna be good.
it is a victory because if a business is using a Linux app on SCO the likelyhood that a Linux box will be deployed somewhere in the organization increases in a big time fashion. Chances would be _real_good_ there would be at least 1 Linux box used as an app server for whatever it is they are using. Eventually the PHB's will be looking to increase profits by cutting costs and will become aware of the irony of paying for their NOS when they could be running their apps in a native environment gratis. Then they can all pat themselves on the back for being so smart. Short term I think it may be a win-win situation but I don't see this as being terrific for SCO in the long run.
