OK, while that's a pretty nice thing, what's the big deal? That.8 sec is only [button push] to the lilo prompt. So? The box STILL has to boot. What if you've got a box that still has to fire up a bunch of daemons before it's even online and usable? What if it was a dirty shutdown (and the silly fool is still running ext2) with a nGig drive(s)? How does this help uptime?
...installed Mandrake 8 on a box containing a Rage 128 video card, and the installation detected and set up 3D acceleration out of the box.
I'm using one of those vid chips on MDK8. anything 3d (OPenGL, etc.) related locks up this box; tight. I love MDK, but it's NOT "out of the box".
Yes. I bought the MDK8 Pro-Pack. So "out of the box" is meant literally...
Yes, I admit I skipped over some of the technicalities, but my point still remains. Alan has already written the kernel patch. He works for RedHat. They NEED (have you checked their stock recently?) a return on their envestment.
I personally use Reiser. I feel (and so the BenchMarks) that it is superiour to (most) of anything else out there.
Disclaimer:
I haven't used ext3. I'm going on benchmarks and my personal eperience alone on that.
Let's see...
RedHat came up with ext3. Alan Cox works for RedHat. AC has already made patches to the kernel for ext3.
Hmmm... the math isn't tough for this one.
(Granted I haven't read the article, it seems to be/.'ed, but...)
Well, yes and no. THere's only ONE Windoze language (for the sake of arguement). There's multple languages under Linux. Ech GUI uses what they feel to be best. Does gnome use QT's code? Nope. Does Gnome use C++? Nope. It different.
The best thing I can think of along the lines you're thinking is (I'm sure there's better, but...) Java. Java is supposed to work on ANY platform; one you have the RIGHT libs installed.
Here's my theory. The KDE project is trying to capitalize on the success of the PaperClip from Hell (TM).
BUNK!
The PaerClip was a damn annoying thing that sat on top of everthing you did and bothered you everytime you tried to do something simple. The Dragon (damn I forget his name...) is there as a "mascot". Nothing more.
If you write an app for Gnome, KDE will indeed run it PROVIDING the KDE user has the Gnome libs installed. That is one of the VERY few things I don't like about Linux. One needs to have all of BOTH's (for the sake of arguement) libs installed.
I don't think normal people will run Linux on their desktop's anytime soon
BUNK!
This is posted with Konqueror. I run the same at work - MDK8.0 (heavily upgraded again...). I do my TimeSheets and what-not with koffice/StarOffice. No one knows any different. That includes the Bean Counters who open my TimeSheet in Excel...
I too have a TNT2. The newest drivers (1.0[something]) do not work at all for me. I get the pretty Splash Screen, but *NO* GL apps will run (and I need my TuxRacer from time-to-time...:-) ). I went back to the 0.9.6.x drivers and all is well. Q3a and Tribes2 own3z.
I'm on MDK8.0 (heavily upgraded again), but anyway, the newest drivers don't work at all for me. BTW, I used the tarballs since I keep my kernel up-to-date.
(This will probably get a -1 since I don't post too often but...)
I gotta give Billy a thumbs up. Honetly this is the first time I've heard of this "Megaserver" thing. But to nix it when he did was a bright idea. AOL was doing good, but it wasn't proven bacvk then like it is now.
*BUT* this scares me a bit. M$ is trying to be the next AOL. That's not a good thing. Another band of un-knowing computer users out there?
Then I suggest you look into this page that is working on a Linux BIOS.
Enjoy.

I kinda think that this is a far better link.

-Never trust a tech who tattoes his IP address to his arm, especialy if it's DHCP.
DAMN that's funny!
Someone PLEASE mod this up.
/.'ed already...

it's hard to put those dollar signs at the end
If I remeber my C=64 hacking right, it was % signs and not $ signs...
