Have you noticed that people always complain about deus ex machina when they talk about Star Trek? There's a reason for this - that's the entire premise of Star Trek. How many episodes don't end with specially engineered nanoprobes, or shield modulation, or a special retro-virus designed by the doctor, or some such nonsense solving the problem. That's what makes Star Trek fun and annoying at the same time. Deus ex machina is what makes Sci-Fi fun and annoying at the same time.
BTW, if I remember correctly, deus ex machina means "god in the machine"

I can just see how they'd sneak it in:
Would you like IE to install software that allows websites to better meet your interests? y/n?
Um... sure, that sounds nice.
At&t did something like that when I installed the cable modem softwware. Would you like @Home to run more efficiently on your compter? Um, WTF? Of course. Then it reassigned like fifty fucking extensions (.html,.jpg, you name it) to launch the fucking @home browser which puts up a fucking ad you have to close before you can continue. Assholes.
Sorry for the slightly offtopic rant, but you get the idea.
Some comedian always posts this hilarious comment, here's what it looked like when 2.4.4 came out.

Canadian and proud of it.
This place is full of comedians. I didn't realize there were so many Paul Risers and Bob Saggets out there. Slashdot is a regular laugh factory, cranking out the funny stuff day and night.

This is an interesting idea, but I sure hope it never happens. It just doesn't seem to fit with the spirit of free software.
And I refuse, (when humanly possible) to use nagware/shareware. Dealing with popup boxes and "shareware delays" just plain sucks. If your software nags users then it sucks and people aren't going to use it or they'll just modify it and re-release it.
Think of a good euphemism for formal dances held by IBM...

Okay, for the sake of providing a little bit of content-added, what's up with 30 to 90 day accounts? Not very useful if you want to develop an application as they say.
On the other hand, do I understand correctly that you could just run vncviewer (a 172KB executable) on windows and get to experience Linux and Xwindows? That would be a really easy way for someone to test out Linux, no distro disks, no partitions, no unsupported video cards. That's the setup I use at home since I have two computers (one windows, one linux), but only one monitor.

Anyhoo, seriously, I think you've been burned here and you're letting it cloud your judgement. You see, there are two different types of game-playing and porn-watching. There's the kind where you immerse yourself - that's really me with the shotgun, those are real people I'm killing, die die die (I could describe the analogous thoughts while immersing oneself in porn, but I'll leave that to your imagination so I don't get the crap modded out of me). Then there's the way most people play these games. Playing Quake or UT isn't that much different from playing tic-tac-toe or mahjong. There's a goal and you have to figure out how get there. Same with porn, you have a goal, and porn can help you get there. I don't imagine the guy in the video with the 10 inch shlong is me, but it's a reasonable visual aid.
So hopefully that made sense. I think your ex-boyfriend just has too lively an imagination, or too many issues or whatever, but whatever, when he watches porn and plays video games he allows himself to be immersed and that's not healthy.
Used to be all their books were 40% off. Then 30% off. Now it's 10% and an occasional 20%. I'm not such a loyal consumer that I'm willing to wait a week for a book and wind up paying more for it when you consider shipping. I go there for the reader reviews, and I buy my books at the bookstore
Here's a thought- things never change. Things weren't better ten years ago or 100 years ago or when ever your "day" was. That's just other-side-of-the-fence mentality.
Here's another thought- everyone is greedy. (though not everyone is cut-throat) That's why it's such a great accusation to level against a company/person you don't like. That's the beauty of capitalism - harnessing greed for the good of all. (Yeah, I know, it's more complicated than that, we have to seek a balance, Microsoft sucks, etc, etc...) Even the "generous" things people do have an element of greed to them (wanting to feel good about yourself, wanting to belong, wanting people to like you because you're so generous, etc).
And a final thought- Every problem has a solution. (just to end on a positive note)
Andromeda is really good. Once you get past the whole Hercules thing, the plots are awesome. They deal a lot with ambiguities. In Voyager, do the right thing and things just magically work out. In Andromeda things aren't quite so simple.

This used to be the most uptight company in the world. Now they get in trouble for grafiti.
Since I don't live in California, I don't mind. California functions sort of like a heat sink to my way of thinking
