I agree with you that almost everything is better subtitled, not dubbed. However, according to something I read, Ang Lee actually preferred the dubbed version of CTHD, because he said it was a better translation than the subtitled version. Though, usually it's the other way around.
This may be true in the big cities, but look in the suburbs and small cities.
We have the same McDonalds/Burger King/Wendys, the same Pizza Hut/Dominos/Papa John's, the same Taco Bell, Outback, Walmart, Jiffy Lube, etc.
The character of the cities has changed somewhat from the corporate monoculture, but not much. If you choose to eat crappy fast food pizza in NYC, that's your own fault.
The town I used to live in didnt have any locally owned pizza places. The choices were the three I listed above.
As long as there is lots of used dirty french fry oil that would otherwise go in the garbage, you could take your vegetable oil car and get a fill up at every mcdonalds. When everyone owns a vegetable oil car, there wont be so much throw-away oil to go around.
I understand the desire to use what would normally be thrown away, but if these cars become anything more than a rarity, the price of used dirty fry oil will skyrocket.
One thing that stuck out in my mind was
"...despite its claims of support for industry-wide standards for programs like instant messaging. "
Industry-wide standards as long as it is THEIR standard, and they are the only ones who are creating the software to conform to this standard. Sounds more like they want to have a monopoly than anything else.
But looking at their business practices, it should be no surprise that they'd love to be The One Big Corporation that will control everything.
Any time anyone declares "the death of" whatever, it's usually not.
Some people will still use linux on their desktops, and some wont. Some people will use windows, and some wont. Hell, some people still are using OS/2.
If Ford can sue over what website is linking to them, can disney sue every pr0n site that links to www.disney.com? In case anyone got confused and somehow thinks that disney is associated with hot tranny midget schoolgirl action, we'd better shut them all down.
I remember reading something about some particle accelerator experiment which carried a tiny, but non-zero chance that it could create a chain reaction that would destroy all matter in the universe.
They went ahead and did it anyway.
Compared to destruction of the universe, any other consequences seem pretty minute.
Advertising isnt about getting people to buy whatever product is being advertised, believe it or not. It's to sell the brand, the name, the logo, etc. It's to make pepsi and disney and mcdonalds logos identifiable to everyone who looks at them. If a company can saturate your mind with their name, you'll develop brand loyalty. Ask anyone in the marketing industry and they'll boast about cradle-to-grave brand loyalty.
It's about selling a way of life- buy this to fill whatever need we're pretending it fulfills. Think of the ads from the early part of the 20th century. They tried to sell the product- this potted meat contains 50% less horse lips than our competitor, and it tastes better too!
Think of the ads today- This X-treme potted meat is the coolest! radical doood! (foxy chick walks in)
"mmmm, I love a man who eats Brand X potted meat."
1/7 of all the money spent in the US is spent on advertising and marketing. If we stopped buying the useless crap that we dont need, the economy would collapse.
I think there was a quote in the Jungle- "advertising is the art of selling people products they dont need"
>Actually, they'd have to prove in court that you did it. Remember, innocent till proven guilty. Of course, by the time it gets that far you've already suffered a pretty substantial hit to your professional reputation to begin with...
Innocent until proven guilty would only apply in a criminal case, no? IANAL but I believe that the level of proof needed is much lower for civil cases. They could sue for whatever damages "you" caused when "you" hacked their system.
Not that it would matter that you didnt do it.

p.s. disney sucks.
Any ideas where area codes 360 and 775 are?
I'd recommend against calling either one of these without figuring that out.
Ever hear the horror stories of the people who call some number in East Craplakistan and it's like $1000 a minute?
The phone company doesnt let you off the hook for that either- you're stuck with it.
So, be careful.
