My favorite anime is Maison Ikkoku. It's about this guy living in a house who has a crush on his apartment manager, and all of the guy's neighbors are wacky. I guess its not really for the action fans, but it's really funny.
Irresponsible Captain Tylor is entertaining too. It's about this slacker who somehow gets put in charge of some starship and he bumbles his way through numerous misadventures. Hillarity ensues!
I used to go to the anime club meetings when I was at school, and I saw a bunch of shows that I dont remember the names of. One where a kid got in fights all the time (that's about all i remember, but it was entertaining) and a bunch about giant robots. I was never that big of a fan of the giant robot anime genre, though there was one I liked a lot, and cant remember the name of that one either. I'm not much help!

A reason why the click-through measure of internet advertising isnt accurate is that the purpose of advertising has never been to create an immediate sale. It's to convince us that we need the product being sold, and that we need the specific brand that is being advertised.
When I go to the store, instead of buying the generic cheesy poofs, I need to buy Cheeztastic Cheezariffics because they're the Chee-Z-est.
So they get the extra dollar or two, so they can pay for more ads and fancy packaging. Even if it is the same product as the cheap stuff.
It's about a selling a way of life, of overconsuption, of consumerism.
This is the point that the internet ads fail to consider. It's not about who will click on the advertised website immediately. Honestly, it doesnt matter if the ads are links or not. They'd be more effective if they were considered online billboards, where you put the name of the product (not even necesarily a website) in someone's head. I mean, who wants to go to the Cheezatastic Cheezariffics website anyway? We've already seen the ad. What would matter is if the next time we go to the store, we've been sufficiently brainwashed with the superiority of Cheez-etc's over the crappy rival brand.
And besides, the internet isnt the shopping mall cash cow that all e-businesses wish it was. Why not? Because people dont want to pay for things on the internet. Especially since if you look hard enough, you'll be able to find what you're looking for, for free.
Sure, I'll use the internet to buy certain things, but only if it is cheaper
It's really a shame though that the independent media websites are folding. However, its not like the internet holds the monopoly on independent media. Personally, I prefer to read a hard copy of that stuff, but I'm just old fashioned like that:]

The Native Americans were beamed in here from the third moon of the planet Lothax, third planet in a star system 55 light years away. They arrived in the year 1996, but the reason why we believe they were here so much longer was that, working with the Godless Liberals, they devised a scheme where a mind-controlling memory chip was implanted in the mind of every person on earth, which contained false memories of the Native Americans being on earth for years and years. Implanted memories, like in Total Recall (where do you think Arnold got the idea from?)It's just an elaborate plan to make Honey Nut Cheerios sell better, since they are the main export of the planet Lothax.
The reason I know this is my brother's best friend's uncle's dogwalker's hairdresser used to live next door to the guy who mowed Arnold's lawn.
Do I have any other proof? Of course not.
Now lets see if this one gets modded up to +3 informative.
IIRC the idea of the PS2 was enough to make people hold off on buying the Saturn and wait for the PS2 to come out, so they wouldnt have to buy another system shortly after they got the newest top-of-the-line machine.
Maybe the idea of the PS3 will be enough to discourage other console makers from creating a new next-generation console. A company scrambling to put together a rival for PS2 will be way behind the game when it comes to making a competitor for PS3.
I agree with you though, that most people probably wont wait 3 years for a new machine.. that's a long time.
In this case, the car doesnt cease to exist.. it's just moved to another location. With minimal effort, you should be able to track your car down.
In the case of data.. once it is gone, it's gone.
A better analogy would be if they moved your data from being web accessable, to putting it on a tape backup somewhere. It would still exist, but it would be harder to get to.
While normally I would take every opportunity to discredit anything Scalia says and does, in the case of the woman who was arrested for driving without a seatbelt, she didnt have her license, registration, or any sort of identification. The cop couldnt give her a ticket without knowing who she was.

And in the case of Iraq, it launched missiles at civilian targets in Israel, a country not even involved in the hostilities. The fact that Israel didn't remove Baghdad from the map is remarkable. I'd say that any country which targets civilians for no good reason deserves to have its own civilians attacked.
Except that the civilians living in the Iraqi dictatorship are just as much victims of the government as the civilians who the Iraqi government attacked.
We need to learn to tell the difference between the actions of a government and keep the blame off the people living under that government, especially in undemocratic countries.
Obviously I dont condone attacks on Israeli civilians, but it wasnt the fault of Iraqi civilians either.
I tutored inner city kids before, in math and reading, and it was one on one, so my experience will be different from what you'll be doing, but I thought my experience was still worth sharing.
I was in high school at the time, the kids were in elementary school. I had 2 kids (not at the same time.)
One was a boy who I spent most of the time trying to keep his attention, and the rest of the time chasing him around the room to try to get him to sit down and work.
The other was a girl who seemed to be afraid of me because I was an older male 'authority' figure.
Kids usually like me, but I had a hell of a time with these two. A lot of the other people I knew who were tutoring kids were having similar problems.. though keep in mind that the reason these kids were in the tutoring program was because they had behavioral and other types of problems.
But, it's something to keep in mind.. In any class, especially elementary school.. and maybe more so because it's the inner city.. there will be some wild kids who might make it hard to teach others who want to learn.
Oh, and one time I got attacked and held at gunpoint outside the school (not by the elementary school kids, but some guys that were about 16 or so.. about my age at the time.)
So be careful of your own physical safety.
Not that I'm trying to scare you out of doing this.. i think it's a worthwhile cause. But, you should be prepared for some nasty possibilities.
Now, when I was being taught computers, I learned mostly on apple IIe and IIc.. Too bad they dont make computers like that anymore.. I mean, they werent powerful but they were great learning tools. I learned LOGO and Applesoft BASIC.
There were some great programs that taught about the internal workings of the computer (in a simplified way)
Depending on the ages of the kids.. if they're older you might want to try some simple programming.. even something like a hello world program can make a kid feel really good, like s/he accomplished something.
I guess if they're younger kids, educational games would be good... at least it would get them used to using computers.
There was a time when I may have paid for Napster service. That was before overfiltering and the RIAA suing everyone and their grandmother. If the RIAA is going to get a dime from Napster, they wont get one from me.
I'd like to see the artists get paid. I'd also like to see the RIAAers get nut-rot.
I'd like to see the artists own all their own music.
The way I see it is:
The record company can make money selling media- they buy the blank CD for whatever it costs them, the CD case, the paper cover, the plastic wrap, etc... they can jack up the price on the piece of plastic and make a profit on it. They shouldnt get any money from the music itself. That is money that the artist, not the record company, earned.
Therefore, all of the money made from selling just the song itself (an electronic copy from Napster) rightfully belongs to the artist, and NONE of that belongs to the record company, since there is nothing tangible involved in the transactions.
Maybe they can charge for the electrons.
Other than that, the music shouldnt belong to them. They didnt create it.. they should get paid for making music distribution possible. When they have no part in doingthe music distribution (a la napster) they have no right to whatever money is involved. THat should be between the artist, the user, and napster.
We did stop listening. They're still playing crap.
I dont have any statistics to back it up, but I would be willing to bet that the majority of people dont like listening to Top 40 crap. However, enough people listen to it to allow the radio stations to make a profit. That's all they need. They dont need 51% of the population's approval. They just need enough approval to make money.
Lets say murder wasnt illegal, but it was certainly frowned upon. I'm a hitman. Nearly everyone on earth would think what I do is deplorable. I dont need their business. All I need is one person to pay me, and I've got it made.
This is one of the limitationss to capitalism. The needs/wants/desires of a majority dont matter
if more money can be made by appealing to enough people to make a profit.
And with a capital intensive business like radio, it discourages others from appealing to those who are left behind by the top 40 crap.
If you listen to commercial radio for more than a week, it's obvious that they're not appealing to what the listeners want. Even if you like that kind of music, how many times can you possibly want to listen to 'get your freak on'? The same songs are played over, and over again..
If anything I would guess that hurts CD sales. If you already heard the song so much on the radio (once an hour, every hour) that you're sick of it, why buy the CD?
So if they're not playing these songs to please the listeners, who are they trying to please? Hmmm... whoever paid them the most, I guess.
I still have trouble finding independent, pro-napster musicians on Napster. Just about everything is blocked... stuff that isnt copywrited, stuff that the artists would allow to be traded, etc.
>The average life expectancy in 1900 was 47 years. Today it is 77, and rising....
