  1. Re:QuakeWorld on G4: The Pong Channel? · · Score: 1

Well you can talk about no memory all you want but i ran a Doom 2 Server on MajorBBS (the bbs software, not saying it was major) in 708/630 in gosh prolly 95 or so. I have a long memory of games. HLTV is the first time I have seen first person point of view and map overview in a game. The rest has of course been standard for a while. Personally Quake bored me rather quickly. Action Quake was where it was at though, a truely cool mod.

Well I use HLTV (half life tv proxy) and I think its great for video game coverage. It was used at the CPL(cyberathlete professional league) championship. Not only do you get a first person view of anyone (great for detecting cheaters or just learning new stratagies), but you get third person follow, free lookmode, and an overview of the map with players position and field of view overlayed. Very cool. It is integrated into the CounterStrike 1.4 update now.

As a regular reader of comp.unix.solaris, I am fairly familiar with these guys. They are called the "Not so Secret Six". this will explain why.

I wholeheartdly agree that continued development shoudl be done on Solaris 9 for the x86. Sparc's are optimized for bandwith i/o. The x86 enables you to do more computationally intensive tasks, on cheaper hardware, and still have large sparc servers to run oracle on, both running solaris.

Yes it is funny. However if you look deeper you may see the author's (artist's???) Hidden meaning. The O is hacked off (the P is just barely visable. I think he was trying to make a statement "Progress". Then again maybe I am searching for meaning where their is none.

My roommate who is a Hamm told me about how Hamm radio operators are using large delta wing kites to take up antennas super high up. If the antennae was high enough and powerful enough it could provide packet radio access to a fairly wide range of people, and hence, internet service. Too bad it's slow 9600 baud max I believe, and you can't use encryption.

If you want to copy your movies on to VHS run the Signal out from your tv into the signal in of your VCR. Then record that. I have done this on a Sat. Dish and it works well. The down side is if you change any volume, or do any function that causes menus, or prompts, etc, they show up on your tape. This is a small price to pay though in my opinon.

  9. Upside and Downside from a Laptop University on Massachusetts Universities To Require Laptops · · Score: 1

Winona State University, a public univeristy in the Minnesota State University System has also done this already. Two very cool benefits from the program:

1: Ethernet ports everywhere on campus now. Sure this would be good if I wasn't grandfathered out of the program.

2: They fix the laptops under the lease agrement for damn near anything you do to the machine. Great for all those english majors who don't know an OS from a Hard Drive.

    Downsides:

    1) 500 dollars a semester. This racks up to an extra $1,000 a year, a hefty increase in the price to a university that has been rated as one of the 100 Best College Buys five years in a row.

    2) 3 year lease with over a $1,000 buy out clause. This means you pay $4,000 for a pile IBM thinkpad. Good thing you can use your own machine if you want.

Yea yea I know im supposed to email it to him. But the question is something that is valid to consider. Bill Gates being president of both companies wouldnt make a split up Microsoft much different than a unified Microsoft. Actually I am much more afraid of 2 header dragons than 1. At least when they are only 1 division the government can keep hitting them with the Monopoly law suits. When they are split you have a much more difficult set of laws that need to be applied to prove unfair buisness practices.
