  4. I've been programming ARM chips for the last 20 years, including on ARM-licensed cores on SoCs, and most of that time I have used the free GNU tools. Just like the RISC-V hardware is going to be good enough for most people, the same applies to free tools.

Another consideration is that the ARM core that we had licensed for our SoC came with the restriction that we were not allowed to modify the source code. Only the external interface could be modified, not the core itself. Obviously, the RISC-V core doesn't have such restrictions, allowing users to implement their own, task-specific, modifications.

All it takes to thwart any laser based weaponry is to come covered in something that reflects and scatters light well.

Try moving around on a sunny day in reflective gear to see how well that works on a battlefield.

  6. To be honest, I feel no empathy for modern action movie actors. It's all so fake now. It doesn't help that they regularly show the 'behind the screen' action with every single thing covered in green sheets, and the actors full of white dots standing on a pile of mattresses.

All new construction I see is made with hollow tubes where wires are pulled through later. Once these tubes are in place inside the walls, it's fairly easy to pull out the old wires, and replace them with fancy new high voltage wires. That's still cheaper than not installing anything at all, and having to retrofit these high voltages wires when the time comes.

We could even make the tubes oversized, to give us more options later.

Obviously the grid needs to be upgraded, not only increased in overall capacity, but also enhanced with smart solutions and dynamic rates. During cooking times, the cars could choose to pause their charging cycle, or even discharge their battery to help the grid, if they have enough charge left to do so.

  14. Re:Not so sure.. on UK Wants An Electric-Vehicle Charger In Every New Home (thedrive.com) · · Score: 1

For newly build infrastructure, the extra cost of providing more capacity is small. The biggest part of the cost is digging trenches, not the thicker copper. It would be much more expensive to install traditional wiring, and then having to upgrade later.

"how do you work out who is parking where without expensive infrastructure for telling what vehicle is plugged into where ?"

Easy and already solved. Plug in your car, and present chip card/bank card/smartphone to turn on the power.

  16. To have Google stop providing an entire operating system for free? To have them start charging you $ to use *any* of the apps?

Sounds good to me. I'd gladly pay for the one app that I use, and free up a few GB of useless crap. And if Google wants to charge a reasonable price for the OS, that's fine too.

If you can't sell someone solar panels and give them a true cost savings using them,

The problem is that some of the cost of fossil fuels (i.e. climate change) is externalized, paid by everyone else, instead of just the person responsible for their use. If we put a tax on fuels depending on how much carbon they produce, we could get a fairer decision on price. That's a job for politicians.

The absolute amount of CO2 matters, not the concentration. And we've increased the absolute amount by about 35% since the industrial revolution.
