An observation though: that $2400 camera lens can last you a lifetime. An iPhone X you probably wouldn't use more than 4 years.
I can blow $1000 on alcohol, drugs and hookers that last only a few hours. Different people like to spend their money on different things. News at 11...
Let's stop right there. Here's a lesson to learn. What this means is that by subsidizing the standard of living of the citizens of your own home country, you raise the standards of living in a different country and possibly one that hates you. That's almost the definition of treason is it not?
Ok this is the stupidest comment I've read all day.
Why would you want to raise the standard of living in a country where the country's disposition towards your country is far less than friendly? You do the math.
Well apart from the fact that India has been an ally of the west for hundreds of years, the math has already been done. Centuries of foreign affairs has taught us that increasing the standards of living has the greatest force for peace there is.
When you've got nothing, you've got nothing to lose.
A quick Google search tell me that there are about 500,000 electric vehicles in the USA. Not bad, right? Well, there's about 300,000,000 ICE vehicles in the USA. The used market for electric cars is very very small by comparison.
Trajectory is more important than position.
It's going to take a very long time before used electric cars get to be plentiful enough to compete with used ICE vehicles.
Is it? You never provided any estimates for market growth so that assumption carries no weight.
If you want to have to pay for exhaust of a car you would have to pay for exhaust of the power plant that produces the electricity your tesla is using.
You mean the solar panels on my roof?
And even if you didn't have those, we have a 'green-power' option which adds about 10% to your bill but guarantees your electricity is sourced from sustainable generation, or offset through carbon trading.
So yeah, we're already doing that too.
That's right up there with "intelligent bureaucrat."
Maybe in California, but many cities such as New York, London, Paris, Hong Kong, Singapore etc display the benefits of town planning. In fact out of all the major cities I've been to in the world, LA is the worst. It's a giant shit hole of freeways and the most human unfriendly infrastructure that I've seen anywhere.
Is this an implicit claim that within 10 years the entire state of California will be one, huge, densely populated large city environment?
I don't think anyone is realistically suggesting that we go from millions of cars to zero overnight. If the summary reads that way it's because that is what the media has devolved into these days with stupid click bait headlines.
"If a completely perfect mask is made, which fools the identification neural network, the defensive system will still notice -- just like a human".
If the mask or photo is "completely perfect" then how will it tell? If it can tell, then by definition the mask is not perfect.
But, but... I want to react to a headline, then go off all half-baked about how angry I am without actually reading any of the detail. I mean, that is how the President does it right?
The share of people who can't go out and buy a new EV on demand is probably more like 95%.
Is that more or less than the share of people who can't buy a new ICE car on demand?
I mean you do know there is a second hand market for EVs too right?
Not everyone can walk out and afford a 40K brand new electric car.
So don't buy a car then. There's a lot of people that don't own cars, and for those of us that live in large cities we shouldn't need to. Any decent town planning would create an environment where you can get where you need to via public trains and buses (electric of course), or bikes or walking.
Problem/solution. If the last 50 years has shown us, personal car ownership in any level of density urban area doesn't work.
like it or not electrics are a lot more expensive up front.
Are they? I don't know, but what I do know is that all the costs for Electric are on the sticker price, whereas ICE vehicles get a free ride by externalising their dumping costs. ie how much would an ICE car cost if you had to collect all of your own exhaust and dump it somewhere safely?
Current death rates due to air pollution (caused mostly by burning fossil fuels) is around 7 million lives per year, almost WW2-like numbers How much would that add to the sticker price of each vehicle if it had to be included up front?
I get sick of people whingeing saying that we are just as bad as the totalitarian regime like China (or N Korea!).
Your statement was that "Totalitarianism results in incompetence, nepotism and corruption", I merely pointed out that you get this with Democracy too, as demonstrated by the last 30 years of US politics.
Totalitarianism has a lot of bad side effects, but incompetence, nepotism and corruption is hardly unique to it.
I never understood why this isn't already a thing. If a previous article is to be believed, Data is the new oil, so why would any sovereign nation just allow a foreign company come and drain all of your natural resources?
Tesla model S & X generally gets good reviews but one issue that constantly comes out is build quality, fit and finish. Lines that don't line up, seals that don't seal etc.
Where I live the Tesla S is equivalent money to upper end BMW 5 series and the Bimmer shits on the Tesla in terms of quality. Same goes for pretty much every other Euro or Japanese luxury brand.
Does it have four wheels and get you from point A to point B? I mean, that's the part I care about most.
Do you care if someone crashes into you because they were looking at their touch screen instead of the road trying to figure out how to change the wiper speed?
Exactly this. I operate all of my vehicles without taking my eyes off the road/dirt/water. Tactile UI work so much better than Touch but they don't look as cool in the sales brochure.

Basically: No need to get all flustered about it

What are they going to do, strand millions of lower-income people who can't afford to replace their $2000 clunker with a $30,000 new car?
Lower income people don't buy brand new cars now, why would they suddenly have to in 10 years time?
What sensationalist tripe.
Yes, yes indeed..

AKA your position
You mean you poor interpretation of my position
is indefensible
Only if you never understood what the position was in the first place. Which is quite obvious based on both your first response and this one.
and when pointed out
The only thing pointed out was your poor comprehension skills
you go smartass
You're an idiot, you got he response you deserve.
rather than admitting that you are wrong.
Right. You knew what I was thinking more than I did. This is what you believe?
Go back to Reddit...
I never understood why this isn't already a thing. If a previous article is to be believed, Data is the new oil, so why would any sovereign nation just allow a foreign company come and drain all of your natural resources?
Our system is far from perfect. But at least we can all help to improve it.
So the latest election improved things in your opinion?

There is very little doubt that more than a few of you are on the kock bros payrolls. Very sad.
Is that you Donald?
The scary thing is voice control is probably going to be their answer to this, but what about those with speech impediments or are mute?
Or worse, radio shock jocks that deliberately fuck with your voice assistant by issuing commands on air?
Totalitarianism results in incompetence, nepotism and corruption.
You say that as if Democracy doesn't? Bush, Bush, Clinton, Clinton, Trump, Trump Trump, Trump, Kushner...
While i think the removal of the repressive Chinese Government from power is the only real solution to all this.
Solution to what? WhatsApp is a product of the Zuckerberg tyranny, so this could be considered a good thing to a lot of people.
..

Companies that opted for Libre Office are starting to look smarter and smarter,
Keep dreaming. For all it's foibles, MS Office still shits on Libre Office if you are in any business with more than one person...
Skype from what I can figure out - it seems to be pretty much Lync with a revamped chat window.
It's not even revamped, it's just Lync rebranded. It has nothing to do with original recipe Skype.
