"In Europe, at least, $200,000 (or £100,000 if you prefer) is a living wage"

uhm, no. I live in Switzerland - which is considered to be one of the wealthiest nations in the world, if not the wealthiest. The average income here is 65'000 Fr. (which is about 50'000$). A good income is anything above 85k, an excellent income starts at about 150k. 200k (CHF) is the kind of money doctors, dentists and lawyers make.

A project for deep-heat mining here in Basel, Switzerland, went horribly wrong - after having pumped water into the ground for a couple of weeks, we've started to have earthquakes. First we got a couple of 2.1s, then we had a 3.2, the last one we had was 3.6 and counting. They now stopped the project but the earthquakes continue to rise in magnitude. We've had 4 major ones in the last month alone and about 10 minor ones.

I'd say it's not smart to start such projects in areas with very high population densities.

Well, believe it or not - High German is really the pseudo-language, not Swiss German. Swiss German (at least as manifested in the dialects spoken in the northernmost parts of the country) is a lot closer related to Old German (and Old English, for that matter) than High German.

"as long as you stay away from those German speakers. (shudder)"

which would be kind of hard, considering the fact that 2/3 of the population speak German. If you hate 2/3 of the population, you might want to find yourself another country.

einar2: I don't know if you noticed or not - we just voted in favor of that foreign worker mobility thing as part of the new immigrant law. Starting in January 2007, it doesn't matter anymore where (qualified) foreigners apply for a work permit - they can subsequently move wherever they want in Switzerland. Unqualified workers from extra-EU states will find it close to impossible to get into Switzerland at all now, though.

"what's the market like for young doctors?"

not good. Over the last couple of years thousands of medical specialists came over from Germany, because there they don't make any money. Now the market is saturated to the extent, that young doctors are legally denied the right to open new medical offices because there are simply too many.

I live in Switzerland and have been wanting to emigrate to the US for years. This year, my wife's name was drawn in the Green Card lottery. I was so happy, I almost jumped to the ceiling. But then I got sick at the worst possible time and couldn't pursue the immigration process - nothing serious, but I'll probably need minor surgery and a couple of weeks of recovery which would have prevented me from claiming my visa within the designated period of time and which would have meant that I probably wouldn't have been been able to get health insurance in the US for a while.

Anyway, now I'm still in Switzerland - it's not like I hate life here, but after having spent quite some time in the US it's just shocking how isolated we're here. And there's no Mexican fast food.

Who says we're paying the same? Last time I checked Apple products were at least 20% more expensive in Europe than in the US. Latest example: The smallest version of the new iPod costs 299$ in the US. However, it costs 399 in the EU - 399 Euros are about 415 Dollars...
This, however, is a general trend - almost all computer products (actually my iBook was built in Taiwan and was shipped here directly from there) are way more expensive here.

  12. Not for Europeans on Apple Introduces iTunes Music Store, iTunes 4, new iPod · · Score: 1

Once more the music industry is screwing Europeans. Even if Apple ever manages to get the distribution rights for Europe - they'll have to charge European customers at least 50% more to satisfy the distributors. I've been boycotting them ever since they introduced copy protection for virtually all CDs here in Switzerland (which keeps them from working on my CD player) and I don't see any reason to support them again any time soon. Screw them.

That may be true for Norther European countries but not for Hungary. Hungary has been an agricultural country for a VERY long time. As to the language: Hungarian is grammatically related to Finnish and Estonian but not (as far as I know) to Turkish, although the latter is also an aglutinating language.
