As a European national (Republic of Ireland), I'm curious to know what social restrictions you refer to? I am aware of some legal restrictions but can't really think of any social restrictions.
The expression is actually "beyond the Pale". The "Pale" was an area of Ireland centred on the east coast around Dublin, and that area was well-controlled during the early days of English control of Ireland. Beyond that area, however, the indigenous Irish clans ruled the roost. Thus, if something was "beyond the Pale", it was dangerous or out of control.
Yes, I wrote an assembler in BASIC so that I wouldn't have to manually translate the operands and opcodes and do a bunch of POKEing... what is the problem? And why be so rude?
Ah, the good old days... writing 6502 assembly language routines to do vertical sprite scrolling on an Atari 130XE, but having to write the assembler first in basic because that's how it was then -- roll your own.
A CV (Curriculum Vitae) is much more detailed -- as the name would imply, it lists the curriculum of your life. Depending on the country, they range from a few (Ireland) to many (Germany)pages, including hobbies, personal information, all schools attended and exams taken since kindergarten, etc.
I found it surprising when I moved here (the USA) from Europe in 1998, but no; Employment contracts aren't standard in the USA. Most states hire "at will", meaning that they can fire you without justification, on a whim, as long as it isn't blatantly discriminatory. The situation in Europe is much more secure.
Did I ever dispute that you could do this? I was responding to a poster who asked why one would want to do this on OS X. NT was never part of the discussion.
The real question, why would Apple want to show a GUI on the mac that you could use instead of it's own?
Because (speaking specifically to X Windows) you can then compile and run X Windows applications, using a window manager like OroborOSX to make them appear to be Aqua applications. This, along with the BSD base of OS X, opens up a lot of great applications that otherwise wouldn't be available.
Mike, while US investment certainly helped, so did massive transfers of capital from the EU. Greece, Spain and Portugal were all less wealthy than Ireland. I'm not sure how you define Europe, as if you look to the eastern European countries, they are much poorer again. I'm Irish (i.e., an Irish citizen, not Irish-American) and grew up watching EU investment and transfers transform my country. US companies certainly helped to a large extent, but I find it annoying that you seem attribute the whole boom to them, and not to the efforts of hard-working Irish people, and generous assistance from our European partners.
Testify, brother! My college (Cork Institute of Technology, Ireland, or as it weas known then, the Regional Technical College) used a Prime 750 when I was there (1986 - 1988). I had forgotten all about Phantoms, COMO, etc. Good times.
People become "angry and venomous" because you have a dreadful sense of humor, pumping out the same, lame, unfunny joke over and over again, you stupid fuckwit.
Ireland in both cases. The UK. France. The Netherlands. Sweden, Finland, Denmark... need I go on?

Thanks for the terminal speed tips! That was one of the few annoyances I've had with OS X. Turned both options off and it is much speedier.
I noticed the heat increase too, mine is also a 600MHz iBook. How do I disable Quartz Extreme?
You spelled 'architect' incorrectly on your sig.
Doing that to some poor 12-year-old should constitute child abuse.

By running X in rootless mode, Aqua and X Windows applications can both display windows onscreen at the same time. It's both cool and useful.
Pipe down, you pretentious twit.
Blow it out your ass, you uncultured yob.

Great, more efficient tech for the Israelis to use against underarmed Palestinians. Fucking Nazis.
Urinalysis would occur with every piss, not every dump. Moron.
