You want to reward someone for winning the footrace to the USPTO? Fine. Give them a 20 year amnesty from federal taxes for income derived from their "invention." Do not give them a monopoly and lock up the very idea (and its derivatives) for the next twenty years! To do so is antithetical to the free market, slows technological development, and cripples the very open exchange of science that is ultimately the foundation of every invention, everywhere.
This is pure briliance. Seriously, tax amnisty or at least seriously deep cuts for related profits for 18 years!!! This could fix the copyright system too.
The best part is the lawyers get to keep their jobs (proving proportions of profit, same IP ownership fights just a different prize.) so they won't fight it.
Monopolies are always bad, even govenment granted ones.
When you introduce monopolies the markets ability to "sort it out" is stripped from it. That is what is going on now. The economy will not recover until IP law is fixed! Idea power must be redistributed.
"Why do I bet these would only be useful with one company's cable service?"
This brings up some interesting questions.
Is it possible to lock down a linux based black box to restrict info/use?
With source code and multiple layers/components for every function, can the inevitable hacking of the box be stopped?
If a piece of black box hardware is distruted with GNU derived software (in ROM for example) does the source code have to be supplied (or made avalible) too?
I'm not infering anything about Rogers cable, but talking about the "let's buy the loss leader Xbox and make it a webserver" or CueCat type reuse in general. I'd hate to see a contigant of Microsoft backed, "hardware with an angle" makers badmouthing Linux as a full time job.

Cool! Does anyone know what number RFC is for the smart tag server protocol? I think I can compete with Microsoft on the metadata morality front(although it will be hard.) People can just click their "change smart tag server" button on the main front panel of IE and get their meta data from me. I'll just hack up my copy of the public domain example code to run on my Linux box and I'll be in business. The DOJ is so unfair to these guys, they make it easy for me compete.
Those Microsoft guys are so good to be contributing this back like that. Giving up control over the protocol can't be easy. If they were evil they could, link your pages to whatever they want, make gobs of money, kill the (dumber half of) Internet with one move. Glad their on our side:)
Good Heavens! That's over the course of what span of time???
About a half a year before I pay up. It's cds and movie rentals, and rock concerts, but mostly movies in the theatre. US$8.50 a pop for me and my girlfriend up fast.:)
I suppose those boycotting will have already done their part under your system....
I thought about boycotting, but our culture in the USA and in NY where I live is ripe with movie refrances and song quotes. I'm afraid I would fall out of touch and become even more stange to the unaware.
I want to watch DVD's on a Linux laptop with GPLed programs, that is what I am after. Why this should be illegal boggles my mind. (2600 and Judge Kaplan are here too.)
The MPAA and the RIAA are now offically the enemy of the constitution (copywrite not impeading progress/science clause)
I have donating dollar for dollar to the EFF for every product I buy from the RIAA or MPAA member companies. My last donation was about US$130 and I excpect my next to top US$150.
It feels great, I suggest tring it. I watched some good movies too.

Isn't that a little unfair to people who don't want to/can't understand english well?
Would it be practical to get a region 1 player/dvds in say Peru? I realize this is not ligit according to the MPAA, but aren't laws supposed to be based on moral and practical precident, not made to shape it? Do English speakers enjoy an unfair advantage?

I think a better meta-for might be a robot wandering around a badly policed town and bording up broken store windows. It would leave a note explaining how it did it, when it did it, and what it did. This could prevent further looting. A robot is different than a human in that you don't have to trust it. If it's specs are sane and it dosn't malfuntion it does exactly what it is told.
And sanity checks in the wild are what signatures and checksums are for... right? If we trust them for other things, why not this?

It's time that the PC market as a whole take a good look at what Microsoft is doing.
Microsoft wants open source and Linux gone! They have said so in every medium I know. They want to control their strangle-hold on IP and will change the hardware to do so. How does this affect you? The thing that threatens Microsoft's loss leader business model is use of the xbox as a way to run cheap Intel/AMD compatible (no fees to MS) software. Even in the Xboxes design MS is gearing up for a legal battle, before their product ships! The xbox will die if Linux is ported quickly and many people buy xboxes as cheap free software compatible PCs.
Notice I mentioned Intel and AMD. That would not be the case once xbox takes over PC markets with their MS bastard son OS USB keyboards and mice. Their will be no more AMD. Come to think of it, anyone who makes hardware for PCs will have to cut a deal with MS or file for bankruptcy. We know MS office or Exchange server for xbox is not far behind the games. If xbox succeeds as a console, it will succeed as a PC all of you will be out of a job! Ho hum an unfortunate casualty in the war against open source software. To bad you little hardware PC guys couldn't do something about it. Oh wait there might be this one thing...
Make damn sure that Linux is ported to the Xbox in a matter of weeks!!!!!
Put some techs on it the week it comes out. If you have anyone on your staff who knows Linux get em on it right away. Coordinate with other commodity HW manufactures. Get Linux on a DVD. Get Linux on the Hard drive. Make a distro. Make a HOWTO and get it up on linuxdoc.org. If not I will have to go back to making excuses for MS (on the enterprise xbox of course) and you will have to go to social security.

"So next time you could have patent owning companies purposely mixing some of their seeds with normal seeds and then claiming the present crops be destroyed or ask for royalties."
Actually under thje logic of this case, if the farmer suing, royalty demanding, company can hold a farmer responsible for what the wind blows around, the farmer can sue for damages for "tainting" his crops with non-windproof pollen.
Damn that was a run on sentance.

I saw a picture of the BSD demon doing Tux up the butt. It kinda pissed me off but then I though about it.
If the BSD demon does tux up the butt: Biggest complaints from BSD folks about linux are lack of general leetness, security and VM issues.
Then Bill Gates is doing the Demon up the butt: He rips off their code every day, and now trashes their licence in return.
And then Tux is doing Bill Gates up the butt: Because he can't use their code. If he did and got caught he would be sued into oblivion.
So who is BSD's hero now?
Stunning image isn't it?
