The entire Internet backbone is powered by C. Do you think router software is written in perl? Operating systems? BIOSes? Harddisk firmware? Data encrypters? GPS firmware? Mobile phone firmware?
Real engineers program mostly in C.
The higher level stuff is just there to enable non programmers to write banal blogging applications that enable people to publish details of their uninteresting lives.
When the world fully wakes up to the amount of energy we waste executing inefficient algorithms in inefficient programming languages, we'll see who's smug then.
>Independance from US control is the second motivator.
Primary motivator. Galileo isn't a UK department for transport initiative, you know. In fact the UK, due to it's low funding, is a bit player. ( I'm from the UK and only got to work on Galileo because I was based in another country at the time )
No. It should be up to society. Some people are just too thick at act responsibly. And car manufacturers are hardly going to build cars for 'a few stupid idiots' - they will design a car and market it hard, and try to sell as many as possible. Regulating will take away the option to make cars suitable for the dumb.
>Exactly, Stallman believes in forced sharing, which is not freedom. "Freedom" in his mind is giving one person the right to take the hard work of another person and use it for themselves, regardless of whether or not the original creator wanted to share his work.
My sentiments entirely. He wont be happy until there is a world ban on people writing software that they refuse to release under GPL 3.141. Fuck that; I write the code, it's my choice. I've written code that I've released under GPL, and code that I've released under BSD. My choice.
He got pissed off when some company robbed him of the fun lab he worked in, and he's been angry ever since.

>the more human readable and dummy proof
Actually those two are exclusive, not inclusive.
>The problem is that we don't train people in the fine art of bullshit detection
But it's a movie! It's a fecking movie!

You're one of those people who write the Ikea assembly manuals, aren't you? :o)
>What's with the remaining 4%? How come not everyone will be covered?
That 4% will be lawyers.
>I can't provide citations to stuff I just made up
lol.
That's going in my sig.
>If the person doesn't use the tape measure properly, and saws the wood too short, there isn't any magic that can fix the problem.
Use the other end of the piece of wood?
Worked for me many times :o)
"Measure twice, cut once"
>Remember: In science, NEVER be arrogant, or too convinced of your theories.
Wow, you haven;t been around academics much have you?
I recall an old joke:
"How many PHDs does it take to change a light bulb?
One to unscrew it, one to pull the chair from underneath him"
Just re-read it and see what you mean. Thanks.
I'm a trainee grammar nazi :o)
>Digital reproduction isn't killing babies
Agreed.
I like to think that for every act of piracy, I deprive some media suit a line of coke.
Completely clear conscience here, I can tell you. I almost feel it's my civic duty to do it.
>There were many fine works when copyright didn't even exist; hell, if copyright existed, we wouldn't have had Shakespeare's.
Shakespeare's what?
>I'm pretty sure that Congress could find a lot of other uses for that half billion dollars
Yea, think of all the coke the bankers could buy with handouts from half a billion dollars.
>And btw. Obama didn't start Ares, Bush did.
Oh come on. Bush could find his own arse in the dark.
>I drive a vehicle that does about 10MPG
The army called. They want their tank back.
>(My luxury car gets 30 mpg
A 1908 Ford model T got 25 mpg.
Doesn't that sound really wrong to you?
Man you are stupid. You are definitely on the "B Ark".
>But should be up to the customer.
No. It should be up to society. Some people are just too thick at act responsibly. >Who cares why your car gets good or shitty mileage?
Er, everyone who has any sense at all?
The prize was for getting rid of George Bush.
>So why should the casual user deal with ads in something that will be feature crippled and basically "consumer" branded (read CRAP)
Unfortunately, they will use it because it is there, installed on their machine.
Still, at least this new version of office really will stink, and will make Open Office look even better.
Did you miss the bit where I said
"I've written code that I've released under GPL, and code that I've released under BSD. My choice."
Well, if you are going to selectively quote me, then I'll do the same for you:
"you are pissed"
How dare you! I don't drink.

>How about Small Engines?
Do you have small engines in America?
They'll be wanting to map our insides next.
