I was one of the 75,000 or so laid of by Lucent Technologies. I have witnessed first hand the processes described above, and let me tell you, it isn't pretty at all. I consider it a slap in the face the way things are occuring in this economy. Gone forever (it seems) are the days when people were respected for the work that was done, as opposed to the bottom line, cut-throat corporate world we are living in now. Looking out for number 1 used to not be my highest priority, being able to go home at night knowing I did a damned good job was. Boy how that has changed. I work for myself now, as an independant contractor, and life is much better. I have been burned once, and you will never see me burned again. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.
I hate to say it, but I for one, would not want this. I live in Atlanta, a very large city with huge traffic problems. Well, my thoughts are this: I deal with the traffic here everyday (worst in America 5 years running btw) and there is a simple reason I do it. MARTA (Metro Atlanta Rail Transit Authority--I think) is not safe. Sure, these cars seem nice, but I don't think it will ever catch on here in the US. I wish it would, we throw enough smog and pollution in the air as it, but for my money, and safety, I will stick to my car. I have never been to Cardif, so I cannot speak for there, but I will speak of what I know.
I am not trolling, but you will probably mod me as such since my opinion doesn't jive with the new tech is good slant of the article.
I just don't buy cd's anymore. I figure bitching about this won't do anything, unless you act on your bitching. I haven't bought a cd in well over a year. Yes, there are many artists out there that I appreciate for their music, but unless we all stand up and say gosh damnit, LISTEN to us, and this is what WE want, nothing will change. Tired of getting run rough-shod over? Don't buy their corporate sponsored music. Listen to local bands, go to clubs, etc. That's what I do.
Unless you hit them where it hurts, nothing will be done.
"I like to think of this as the Napster recession. If you plot the stock markets before September 11th, you can see that the crucial court rulings are almost like hinge points where the market bends up or down. The stock prices go up after a favorable ruling for Napster and drop afterwards."
Ok, I'll bite. I disagree to a point on his thoughts here. Napster was a nifty piece of software that did revolutionize the way people looked at computers. However, there is a lot more to the (I assume he is speaking of pc companies' stocks) decline in sales than Napster. How bout this recession we are in because any idiot with a half-baked idea could get millions in venture capital and then blew it when the dotbomb mess happened? People lost a LOT of jobs then. When your money is tight, your entertainment expenses tend to drop lower as well. Rather than go buy a new computer, people are making do with what they have. Not to mention the fact that this is a finite market as well. Once everyone has a computer, you can't expect sales and marketing to help much, people won't buy a new pc without a good reason. Napster may have been that reason for some, but I don't buy it. My $0.4
God forbid this ever gets put into action. Most knee jerk MS haters will say this is good thing, but it isn't. When Joe Schmoe loads up an open source program and gets hacked because he was ignorant of security issues then what? IIRC, ignorance of the law doesn't mean you can get awy from it correct? So, because some idiot doesn't know proper security, you are going to slam the guy or gal that made the software? Ludicrous.
Besides, NO ONE can make software that can't be hacked. If you can, then maybe you should go talk to MS:)
"The real problem is that you won't concede that computing is developing niche markets. Something I would have though linux users would have been able to appreciate implicitly."
I WILL and do concede this. I was referring to why APPLE is succeeding (for the most part, sadly) only in the niches.
"I don't think its a stretch to for Jobs to concede that MS won the operating system war - thats why he is trying to fight the total user experience war - something MS can't do unless it wants to start making boxes."
WARNING--I am not trolling:)
The problem I see is that the majority of the people he seems to be going for are really a niche market. Honestly, unless you are an artist or technophile, most of the products MS has out there will do what you need, and they are super easy to get. Ease of use for new computer users--sure, except that 90% of the people out there recommend Win9x or 2000 for them, since it is truly easy to use (think of it this way, is that grandma in Des Moines likely to slap a dvd in and make a movie, or is she more likely to have a crap machine SHE CAN AFFORD win 95 on it and dial up access for the ONLY thing she uses it for--email)? It is sad to see that most are ignorant of the choices they have. When your avergage user thinks of a computer, they think MS...
but, what do I know, I am just a stupid user:)
Congratulate the author for a very well done article, and this is one of those times. It's nice to know that research and thought goes into these articles....a hardy thanks from yours truly....
peace
Too bad our internet here on earth is suffering from the strongest known force in the universe....
the slashdot affect. I will be writing an rfc on this in the near future....
btw, anyone got a mirror yet?
OMG, you slashdotted the IETF! You bastards!
"Come on, the defacers live for their work to be posted."
That's exactly why they are stopping. It used to be a site for interesting cracks and exploits, designed to HELP companies become more aware of security issues, not a "hey check out my stupid web hack" show and tell site for stupid script kiddies. It's a shame to see it go, but if you have ever actually looked at the page and seen the abuse they take on a regular basis, can you blame them? It's sad to see a bunch of morons take away the very thing that made attrition a cool place to check out every once in a while...
From the original post:"the only thing I will use the "wireless web" for is to check a Red Sox score." I agree...I have never EVER seen anyone use the wireless web for anything other than checking their stocks, or getting a tid-bit of info on sports or something along those lines. Any I high, or have some of you actually used your PDA for something other than personal use?
When are we going to stop trying to "protect" our children from all the "bad things" out there? If you have children, BE WITH THEM. Help them learn what is right and wrong...don't let the media and a group of people that have no idea what it's like to be a young person in todays world try to tell you what you can and can't do for your children. IMO, this will not stop your average kid from getting to porn sites if they want to. (Remember, kids are smarter than you;-O)
When will parents understand that you get what you give, especially in respect to your children?
Damn, this pisses me off.....
Most american's won't understand this, since they are for the most part sheep that will just hop on dell's site and price the computer, never thinking that compaq and ibm are doing the same price jacking....so it looks like a good deal...if they WERE aware, this would go over like a turd in a punch bowl....
Of course he is going to say the very things that irritate most everyone here......*drum roll*....it's his JOB. If it was my job to spout this crap, then I would. think about it before giving exactly what he wanted...a knee-jerk reaction..."he said what?!? The bastard!
*yawn* *refresh-time*

First, Taco had two pron mentions in a 5 hour time span, now 2 mentions of Tom Cruise close together...what the hell is going on here? I want my slashdot back!
"if the younger generation can see what "cool" things can be done, hopefully some of them will take a larger interest."
It would be nice if this did occur...but I believe most people go to the movies for the same reason I do, to escape the reality that is their lives. When I go, I want to be entertained, not thinking about what this can do to better the Linux awareness of our youth. I hope this doesn't come across as a troll, but if it does, that's ok too. Just my opinion on the matter
A man was seriously injured today, when his "un-authorized" use of the suction cup technology left the device hanging painfully from his nether region. Authorities worked for 5 hours with the jaws of life trying to pry the suction cups away from his crotch....yes, off-topic, but think about it....some moron out there WILL try this...mark my words....or not, I really don't care...
Yes, I am well aware that all of this stuff previously existed, I was merely pointing out that not everything on the net is as pretty as people sometimes make it seem...people will always share information, just because I don't like it doesn't mean that they shouldn't....so in effect, yeah, you're right....
So, all those people that died in wars in the past for the freedom that we all have today died for nothing? The right to free speech is one of our most basic rights...it's a shame to see a "religion" do this to a person....but that just goes to show what a group of motivated (right or wrong) people with lots of money can do....a government of the corporations, by the corporations, for the corporations....
Step A: Lose Job
Step B:
Steb C: Profit
"While this is a tragedy in our lifetimes, in the near future, all children will be genetically engineered to be what we would consider geniuses "
Nope, it's just too damned much fun making babies the old fashioned way

Replace almost every question mark in the whole "interview" with a period and it reads like to friends just shooting the bull....
From my original post :)

I guess my wording made that a little difficult to read properly. I do agree with your post tho....
